‘Why is every costume sexy? I don’t wanna be sexy! I wanna be the reason the night is feared!’ frowned George a little too loud and a disgusted look settled down on his face. He did another little spin in front of the cabin mirror and sighed.
‘Wow, sexy,’ said a blonde head and soon enough Dream showed up.
‘I know! That’s the problem!’ repeated George once again and kept checking himself out in all angles possible, but nothing could make him satisfied.
‘I wanna have your problems, G,’ Dream laughed about his frustration.
‘Shut up,’ smacked him George. ‘Pick something good this time.’
Dream left the cabin with a smile on his face. Getting to look at his boyfriend in various costumes that he picked up? It wasn’t really the store’s fault they were all so-not-scary. He put the vampire cloak back to the shelf and searched for more options. He already made George wear a spider web style skirt today, and the afternoon was really starting to take off.
‘A WITCH DRESS?!’ yelled George a few moments later.
‘THIS SKIRT WON’T EVEN COVER MY HIPS!’ he continued and Dream couldn’t help it but laugh at him, as he was standing there in the smallest changing room in the world, shirt off, swearing about a halloween costume.
‘Come on, you’ll look awesome,’ said Dream when he was able to speak again, and he meant it. He had never met anyone who’d look pretty wearing literally anything - or nothing, Dream didn’t mind that either. George was perfect for him.
‘Bring me something I won’t get sent to hell for,’ said George and shot an annoyed look in his direction. ‘This thing is horrible.’
‘Wouldn’t be if you were wearing it,’ protested Dream.
‘I’m gonna have to tell you to shut up again, love,’ threatened him George and he couldn’t keep a mad face anymore.
‘Oh sure,’ flirted Dream back and before George could say a word, he kissed him on the cheek and left the room, a satisfied expression lighting up his face. He knew George was fighting a huge smile right now, maybe even pretending he didn’t care or that he was still mad about the dress.
He really wanted to pick something that his boy would like now. Thinking of some simple skeleton, maybe something Stranger Things themed as that was George’s favourite show since he could remember knowing him at all. Lost in his thoughts he accidentally turned to the wrong aisle.
George would probably kill me, flashed through Dream’s mind as he picked up a kid’s pumpkin costume. It was the brightest orange he had ever seen and it had instantly reminded him of Sapnap, their friend who absolutely hated costumes and usually stayed loyal to an old ghost disguise. Imagining him as a pumpkin - a very angry one, probably - made him laugh out loud.
Even though he knew Geroge would probably make him end this shopping session and refuse to kiss him for the rest of the day for it, he took it anyway. No worries he’s not gonna fit into it, was his last thought - don’t tell George that, or he’ll actually lose his mind - before he turned around and rushed back to the changing room.
‘No, that’s it, no, I’m calling Sapnap to come pick me up,’ protested George loudly as soon as Dream showed up with a tangled pile of orange fabric in his hands. ‘You are never making me wear this,’ he insisted.
‘Pretty please?’ tried it Dream anyway with the best puppy eyes he could pull off.
Honestly, it wasn’t about picking the best costume ever anymore for him, but having a fun time just them together was still a fresh and precious thing for him. Seeing the brown-haired boy get excited about small things like picking flowers and Dream telling him what colour they were, whispering in each other’s ears, their fingers brushing on casual occasions, George placing his hand on Dream’s hips when passing by, and oh my god, cuddling. All of that instead of a harsh, cold discord call. They had to catch up to all of those years then couldn’t even talk face to face.
Dream felt bad about it sometimes. The day they first met up, he couldn’t help it and knocked on George’s door at about two am. The brown-haired guy, jet lagged and fully awake, just let him in and that was the first time Dream hid his face in his boy’s neck and quietly cried. He knew George would never blame him for anything worse than having a slow internet connection, but the thought was there and he knew it’ll take time until it fully goes away. He had George by his side now though, it was gonna be okay.
‘No way,’ persisted George. ‘Actually, you know what?’ he asked after a short while and a wide smile made its way onto George’s face.
‘Drop this,’ he commanded and pointed to the orange monstrosity.
‘Oh,’ Dream remarked in surprise, ‘now we’re commanding?’ He shook his head. Soft boy George was seemingly still full of surprises and Dream was so here for it. And into it. Yeah, everyone could see he was into George. And I mean, who wasn’t - but George was his and his only.
‘I said drop it,’ called George again.
‘Earth’s calling Dream, the internet’s most beloved dumbass, hello?’ he laughed and calmly dodged Dreams' attempt of grabbing his hand and pulling him in for a distracting kiss. He made Dream sit down on an unstable looking chair and then pointed a finger towards his chest.
‘Now you wait for your destiny to be fulfilled,’ he declared and wow, he was having more fun with this than he expected. And Dream’s slightly shocked, but still curious look was just a bunch of bonus points. It took him a lot of his - in his boyfriend’s presence already pretty weak - willpower to not give up this revenge bit and not kiss him right on the spot. Seems fun to be the taller one for once, thought George as he left the room and just the thought along with his wild fantasy turned his cheeks pink.
He wasn’t really sure where he was going with all this, to be completely honest. George went through a part of the halloween aisle - Jackson’s Thriller playing on loop in the background, again - and found a good reason to not pick any of the costumes, convinced that Dream could actually pull them all off. He almost took the master Gru’s grey scarf to join in on the balding inside jokes all the boys kept going on about, but it just wasn’t the right one.
Frustrated, he texted Sapnap for help.
‘You idiots have been there for hours by now, did you decide to have a date without me or what’s going on?’ said Sapnap immediately when George picked up the phone.
‘I need to choose a costume for Dream,’ announced George and explained his newest life-complicating problem.
‘Dude, you’re literally in a halloween-themed store, I don’t know how to help you,’ pointed out Sapnap and continued. ‘By the way, don’t get spooked too much now.’
‘What-’ started George and screamed a second later, when a strong arm landed on his shoulder.
‘SAPNAP-’
‘I told you not to get spooked,’ laughed his friend and didn’t wait at all for George to catch up. He briefly looked around and soon enough he grabbed a costume.
George just raised his eyebrows. ‘Seriously?’
‘He’ll love it. It’s awesome,’ stated Sapnap, fully convinced about his idea. ‘I’m so awesome,’ he added, as if it gave the costume some more value, and then made George take him to the changing room.
Dream pulled the curtain away with a somewhat dramatic gesture.
‘Ta-da,’ he said dryly, but his expressions were soft. George couldn’t help but laugh at the scene. Tall blond guy - his tall blond guy -, standing in the middle of a halloween store aisle, stuffed in a ridiculous costume with a pretended - or so he hoped - disgusted look on his face.
‘I don’t see a difference, actually. You’re a clown for the majority of the year,’ evaluated the scene Sapnap and Dream started chasing him around the store.
George laughed like he hadn't in a long time as they rushed past him and laughed even more when he heard the saleswoman squeal a moment later. He loved this rare friendship and he loved Dream.

Thing was, George didn’t miss much about his life in London. He didn’t miss the noise, or his tiny flat, or the roof that leaked more often than not.
But he did miss autumn.
George misses autumn. Dream makes it better.
