Job Losses and Bean Sprouts
Job Losses and Bean Sprouts. What is lost when a community is broken & jobs vanish? #leadership
Kindergarten teachers have children plant beans in little cups. The exercise is simple but the lesson profound: everything is born, everything constantly changes, and everything dies. One of the smartest people I’ve known once reminded me of that lesson.

Women as Glue
It need not be women's role but often is - women as glue. What do I mean? #women
Movie lines sometimes contain more truth than a philosophy tome. Consider my favourite line from My Big Fat Greek Wedding. A mother is patiently explaining to her adult daughter that Dad is indeed the head of the family. However, she adds, “I am the neck.” I love that. I might add that women are also often the glue.
I learned this truth by unconsciously absorbing my paternal grandmother’s…

For what was supposed to be a simple dinner with my mom and a stroll through my final Art Crawl turned out to be quit the adventure. After a bottle of wine and two gin martinis I found myself weaving in and out of stores and galleries on James St to singing Love Is A Battle Field at the Wellington and finally in some random Portuguese bar on Barton St. that felt more like crashing a wedding.
Next thing I know I'm waking up in last night clothes to blurry memories. I take my camera and make it back to Barton with my mom for a sobering walk down one of the most underestimated streets in Hamilton.

I drive down Barton everyday passing by decrepit buildings, boarded up boutiques and othesr which are in business but I have no idea what they're trying to sell. Some of them were home to people selling their personal belongings passing of dingy over crowded spaces as stores. Like a self-titled crackhead and friend once told me "If a 300 pound person is selling all their shit on Barton St. that's their problem, not mine". And although he may be right I walked into some of those places and found the coolest shit. There was one tiny place found that had all this vintage jewelry, hand carved wooden clocks and beautiful antique radios that were all pathetically piled on top of one another. The only sign of existence was a string of 1930's watches that hung limply in the window collecting dust. I took my chances on the door coming off at the hinges and was greeted by an older gentleman in broken English. He looked like he hadn't seen the light of day in years. When I told him I would try to come back on the way home he told me that he had worship at 6:30 and that he would be back for the rest of the night and to just ring the door bell. "Anytime, even mid-night! I be home".
Hmmm. In all seriousness if you have the time and are into antiques and old shit like me take a day to explore Barton. The price difference compared to Locke and Ottawa antiques will be astronomical; you just have to use your eyes and have an open mind to what you may encounter along the way.
