To All Readers (and their dogs)
Someone asked us the other day, what is our reason to exist? Why do we need to revitalize community participation with dog shelters and rescues? While we are not living under stone, a lot of people are. Here are some startling facts why we need to exist, why more and more people need to pledge help (donation, volunteer hours, adoption, fostering and more) to the shelters and rescues.
About 60% of the shelter dogs are euthanized every year in US
Yearly cost to U.S. taxpayers to impound, shelter, euthanize, and dispose of homeless animals: $2 billion
90% of animals entering U.S. shelters are healthy and adoptable
Only 20% of owned dogs are adopted from an animal shelter in US
Almost 30% of dogs in U.S. shelters are purebred
Average age of animals entering U.S. shelters: under 18 months old
More than 20% of people who leave dogs in shelters adopted them from a shelter
70% of people acquire animals and end up giving them away, abandoning them, or taking them to shelters
So these are some of the reasons why we believe in changing the ecosystem.
