Did You Know Pet Therapy Can Improve Social, Emotional Or Cognitive Well-Being?!?
A Step By Step Guide: Giving Your Dog the Perfect Nail Trim
It’s the activity that many dog owners approach with apprehension, anxiety or downright dread – the process of trimming their dog’s nails. However, regular nail trimming is very important for your canine companion – not only are long nails annoying and uncomfortable for them, but nails that are overgrown can cause your pup to walk abnormally, leading to muscle strain or even arthritic changes over time. The good news is that your pup’s nail trim doesn’t have to be difficult! Let’s look at how you can learn to easily and effectively give your pooch the perfect ‘paw’-dicure.
1. Handle Those Paws
Before you ever pick up a pair of nail trimmers, it’s essential to teach your dog to enjoy having his paws handled. Whether your dog is a young puppy or an old timer, start including a regular program of touching and picking up your pet’s paws every day. Pair this handling with lots of rewards for your pooch (hint – your dog’s favorite yummy treats work best), and reward him especially when he’s calm and relaxed during sessions. Once your four-legged friend is accustomed to paw handling, introduce your nail trimming equipment – reward your pup often for looking at, sniffing, and allowing their paws and nails to be touched by the clippers.
2. Educate yourself
Dogs are extremely perceptive, and easily sense our worries and anxieties. If you’re not confident about how to actually trim your dog’s nails, your dog may pick up on that and become stressed themselves. Knowing the anatomy of your pup’s nails, where on the nail to clip, and how to use your nail trimmers correctly are all important steps before beginning your pet’s pedicure. Your veterinarian or dog groomers are both good resources for learning about nail trimming.
3. Choose your tools
The type of tool you use depends on personal preference, as well as the size of your pet’s nails. Guillotine style (best for small to medium dogs) and plier-type trimmers (suitable for most dogs) tend to be the most commonly used. Non-cutting tools such as a nail grinder or dremel can also be used, but be aware that this method takes a longer amount of time to get nails short enough. Styptic powder, which stops bleeding, can also be handy to have on hand in case you accidentally trim a nail too short.
4. Time to Trim
Choose a time when your dog is well exercised and relaxed, and pick a place that’s comfortable for both you and your pup – the floor works well for large dogs, and a raised table or counter makes trimming easier for smaller pups. It’s a good idea to have another person to help you hold your pup and give your dog frequent rewards during the actual nail trim. Hold your dog's paw firmly in your hand and clip in small increments from the tip of the nail, at a 45 degree angle to the floor. Cutting small amounts at a time can help to avoid cutting the nail quick, which can be painful for your pet and cause bleeding. Make sure that you also trim the dewclaws (higher up on the paw) if your dog has them. For dogs with black nails, it can be helpful to look at the bottom of the nail as you cut. The appearance of a lighter center spot in the nail (the beginning of the quick) means that it’s time to stop!
5. But What If...?
Sometimes, despite your careful attention, you may clip a nail too short. Stop trimming right away, and hold a clean cloth or gauze to the nail for 20-30 seconds, and then apply styptic powder to stop any bleeding. If your pup seems stressed or is squirming too much, give him a break and return to trimming the other nails another day. With time and patience, trimming your furry friend’s toenails can be smooth and simple!
