The New Doha Zoo, which has been in the works since 2012, is being constructed on the same site as the old Doha Zoo, which shut down in 2012 after being heavily criticized for its poor care of animals. The animals from the old Doha Zoo have been temporarily relocated in Qatar while the new zoo is constructed. The New Doha Zoo has been designed by PJA Architects and HHCP Architects. The new zoo will feature over 3000 animals that will be divided into three areas themed around the South American rainforest, Asian woodlands, and African savannah. Visitors will be able to experience the zoo by drive-thru safari, boat and foot.

$32m in key contracts awarded as new Doha Zoo project commences

Two local construction companies have been awarded major contracts worth a combined total of $32 million (QR118m) to kickstart Qatar’s upcoming mega-zoo project, Ashghal has announced.

The first company, Aswan Trading and Contracting Co., has been tasked with site preparations and the eventual demolition of buildings and facilities on the new Doha Zoo site.

Hot on the heels of the country’s new tourism strategy, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) have released more details of one of Qatar’s future major attractions – an entirely re-worked, “world class” Doha Zoo.

Ashghal senior planner Gregory Clarkson told delegates at the Tourism in Tomorrow’s World conference in Doha yesterday that the new 71-hectare site would feature a cable car link from Villaggio mall and a “seven-star” treehouse hotel.

He added that a landscaped walkway will be built across Al Waab Street, linking Aspire Park with the zoo to create “a zoo within a park.”

The new site would be seven times the size of the current 30-year-old zoo, which closed abruptly in August 2012.  It is slated to include some 3,000 animals and be constructed at the same site as the existing facility.

‘Biosphere’

Ashghal laid out preliminary plans for the new zoo last November, including announcing themed zones such as “Africa Safari,” and “Asia Woodland.”

Additionally, a controlled biosphere roof system will be installed in part of the zoo, allowing it to “rain” once an hour, Clarkson said, adding that there will also be a dedicated tram route to the zoo.

He also disclosed more details about the three hotels that are expected to be built on the site: a “seven-star” treehouse hotel” with only four suites; a 60-room, five-star “rain forest hotel;” and an 100-room, four-star family resort.

Site plans also feature a “Zoo Village,” which would house themed restaurants and shops, and a large underground parking facility, which Clarkson said could also be used by Villaggio shoppers.

Opening date

Clarkson told the Gulf Times that construction on the site will begin this year, following the awarding of design contracts last November.

The zoo is scheduled to open to visitors in late 2017, although it’s not clear whether this will simply be the first stage of its development.

In November, Ashghal said that hotels “might be included in later phases,” suggesting that planners will open the site in stages.

Meanwhile, zoo animals are still believed to be housed on the old zoo site. Ashghal is currently building a specialist animal containment facility off of Al Shamal Highway, but that development won’t be completed until the end of this year at the earliest.

Ashghal told Doha News last November that, as an interim measure, all animals would be moved to shelters at the Rawdat Al Faras farm when demolition of the old site commenced.

To make way for new safari park, Qatar plans demolition of Doha Zoo

Advancing on plans to develop a new $55 million safari park, Qatar is prepping its existing Doha Zoo for demolition.

This month, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has asked local contractors to bid on a project that involves razing all structures inside the zoo, which is located on Furousiya Street off of Al Waab, near Aspire Park.

The 30-year-old facility was closed suddenly in August 2012, amid criticism of outdated facilities and poor treatment of animals.

The Ministry of Environment has previously said that the zoo would undergo an overhaul that would result in a development three times larger than the existing one.

The new development is expected to be completed in 2017 and would be akin to a safari park, Dr. Qassim Nasser Al Qahtani, head of the Animal Resources Department, told QNA in January.

According to the tender posted on Ashghal's website, the Dream Park adjacent to the Doha Zoo will also be closed later this year and demolished. When the park opened in 2010, it was billed as the biggest outdoor entertainment center in Qatar.

Fate of animals

Previously, it was understood that when the zoo closed, its animals were relocated to farms across Qatar, but that no longer appears to be the case. According to the project timeline:

The animals and residential staff will be gradually relocated to alternative facilities off site from November 2013 to April 2014. (This will release the occupied zoo facilities in a phased sequence for demolition to be completed by the end of May 2014 in preparation of the permanent works).

Speaking to Doha News, a Ministry of Environment spokeswoman confirmed that the animals' relocation is still in process:

"(The MoE) seeks to guarantee the animals’ welfare and to supervise their move from the zoo to a special farm where they will stay until the program of developing the zoo ends."

Meanwhile, another tender floated by Ashghal this month sheds some light on the fate of the zoo animals.

The project involves the construction of an animal containment facility off of Al Shamal Highway at the Al Zubara Interchange, and the contract states:

The scope is to develop a purpose built animal containment facility that will house the existing animals from the Doha Zoo. The facilities will be split into 4 zones, which will predominantly group the animals by species or risk.

The site also requires staff accommodation and administration facilities which are to be temporary facilities at first if the permanent facilities cannot be constructed in time to allow the animal relocation to commence.

However, that facility will take at least a year to build. And in the interim, during which the demolition of the zoo is expected to take place, it is unclear where the animals will be housed.

Doha Zoo to remain closed for at least three years as it is converted into safari park

Doha Zoo is set to for a major overhaul over the next three to five years as it is converted into a safari park, reports the Peninsula.

The 30-year-old zoo, which has been criticized in the past for its outdated facilities and poor treatment of animals, closed without warning in August last year.

News reports at the time suggested the zoo would remain closed for months, but today's report reveals a large-scale renovation which will take between three to five years to complete.

Dr. Qassim Nasser Al Qahtani, head of the Animal Resources Department at the Ministry of Environment, says that when finished, the new zoo will be three times larger than the existing plot.

“The new zoo will be like a safari park, providing suitable environments for each animal. It will provide entertainment areas for visitors. The premises will be connected to a market in the neighbourhood,” Al Qahtani told the Qatar News Agency.

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has issued a report on the state of the current zoo, which concludes that its buildings are too old, and in some cases actually pose a danger to the general public, reports the Peninsula.

One resident has told Doha News that according to staff, the zoo's animals have been moved to a new temporary home near Al Khor while the work is being carried out.

The overhaul - which reportedly could cost up to $55 million - follows a similar announcement in Dubai.

Last many, authorities in the UAE announced that Dubai Zoo would be expanded and renovated, and renamed the Dubai Safari Project.

Qatar gifts rare triplet lion cubs to Denver Zoo as local zoo continues renovations

Three six-month-old lion cubs have been sent to the United States to spend a few months at the Denver Zoo in Colorado as a gift from Qatar's ruling family, the Denver Post reports.

The triplets - brothers Tsavo and Enzi and their sister, Sabi - will be taken in by the zoo until a permanent home can be found for them, the zoo said in a statement on its website, adding that were sent to Denver to receive better care.

The lions' parents were apparently a gift from Sudan to Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Thani, one of the Emir's sons. They bred and the mother died of complications, the zoo stated:

With the lion family having doubled in size, the sheik contacted zoos in the United States that could better meet the needs of this lion pride.

Denver Zoo was asked to assist as Curator of Large Mammals Hollie Colahan is also the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Lion Species Survival Plan (SSP) Coordinator, which determines the best home for lions in North American zoos...Colahan travelled to Qatar, met with veterinarians caring for the lions and personally oversaw the import process in late October.

Lions are considered endangered in parts of Africa and fewer than 30,000 are left in the wild.

Meanwhile, Qatar residents are anxiously awaiting the reopening of the Doha Zoo, which closed indefinitely in August for renovations. The estimated $55 million revamping is supposed to help the zoo, which has been criticized for its small size and treatment of animals, to meet international standards.

Doha Zoo closes indefinitely for renovations

After years of planning and discussion, Doha Zoo has closed indefinitely for renovations, local media and residents report.

The zoo, which has been much-criticized for its small size, outdated facilities and treatment of animals, will undergo a QR200 million ($55 million) renovation to meet international standards, Al Raya reports.

The upgrade, while lauded as a much-needed step, drew the ire of some CMC members, who expressed displeasure at the timing of the renovations.

During Eid holidays, the zoo is a popular destination for residents, CMC Vice-Chairman Jassim Abdullah Al Malki told the Peninsula.

“Where would the people, especially families, go now during Eid? They should at least open part of the zoo for visitors during the festival,” he said.
