Character in general: I already talked about Big Boss, so let’s talk about Venom. MGSV is relatively new and I’m still sorting out my feelings for him. There’s so much analysis pouring out of the fandom that I’m finding it difficult to figure out what I make of him. At some point, I’m going to step back and go through the series again without touching tumblr. Thus far, I have more of an opinion on V as a literary device than I do as a character, which... is kind of sad because that’s exactly his role in the story. He’s less a person and more a tool, and that makes me feel for him -- but at the same time, I don’t know how happy I am with his existence. Yes, this was a very interesting way to show just how far BB has fallen and what he’s willing to do; he’s literally ripped this man’s life away from him and is now using him for his own purposes, and there was no real consent, only acceptance, which is not the same at all. You want to feel bad for Venom. I do feel bad for Venom. At the same time, I never really get into characters that I just feel bad for. I wish there had been more of a struggle with Venom’s autonomy similar to that of Les Enfants, and it’s intriguing that the three clones have more vitriolic reactions to being born as Big Boss than Venom -- a man with a past of his own -- has to being made into Big Boss. Of course, having the same character arc over and over again is boring, but I feel like this would have been fresh, again because Venom was his own person. His calm acceptance is heartbreaking to watch, and the players can see that he’s really not Big Boss, but I just wish there had been more from him. Then again, I haven’t finished the game 100%, so maybe there are tiny things I’m missing out on, but I am a good portion of the way through and for roleplaying purposes I’ve seen all the endings ( Quiet, man ) so I have a good overall feel for the character. Not the same, but it’ll have to do. As a Snake roleplayer, I’m more concerned with how his story factors into the original games. I’m all right with the concept that Venom was in Outer Heaven all along and it does clear up some of the confusion about Big Boss being the final boss twice ( though I always sort of liked how he’s just there, and fuck you for trying to kill him once it’s not over yet and it’s all the more satisfying to kick his ass a second time ), but I’m not a fan of the people who try to say that Venom was involved in Snake’s training or that Snake only knew Venom because a huge part of the series hinges on the ( mostly unseen ) connection between Snake and Big Boss, and this idea that they knew each other. Not that they liked each other or that they were a family, but that they were close in the way that comrades are, because it adds a layer of depth with the LEF situation -- the two brothers who are emulating Big Boss are the ones who didn’t really know him at all, while the one fighting him and rejecting his entire ideology is the one that he trained personally. That says a lot about Big Boss. He’s more reputation than man and now he’s using that to his advantage just like Zero but has the audacity to act like clones are worse than brainwashing an existing person to be you. In that way, Venom is great... but then his actual character clashes with the story. Maybe it’s just me, but I could not look at Venom and say, “Yeah, this is Big Boss ( ha ),” because their personalities are extremely different. I’d like an explanation as to how Venom went around for years convincing people he was BB while BB was also being BB like you’re going to get widely conflicting stories of who Big Boss is and what he does. Maybe that was the point? It’s food for thought. And maybe I’m just too close to see how it really works. But I’m going to stop talking now lmao. How they play them: I’m a big fan of Big Bosses who are unabashed assholes. Yours doesn’t quite toe the line between being the leader we saw him to be in MGX/2 and the man we’ve been following since the end of MGS3 so much as he takes them and mashes them together and is both at once. He’s stoic and carries his aura of mystery that he uses to his advantage when directing FOXHOUND, but he’s also a bloodthirsty shit who will absolutely beat the snot out of his own child to teach him ‘how the world works’. He’s bitter and jaded and he isn’t afraid to let Solid know it. He’s not soft on him. But eventually he might grow to like him, and that’s sort of where the meat of this relationship lies: do they like each other or do they hate each other? The answer is yes. And your writing shows that well. Your interactions with others are sinful well-written but I’ll confess that I haven’t read many of them yet. I’ll fix that. I have read your fic tho so...
