Drum Magazine. Probably the most iconic African magazine to date, was started in South Africa in 1951 during Apartheid by Jim Bailey and Bob Crisp. The magazine depicted South African township life past the misery of Apartheid. It celebrated the musical, artistic and intellectual life of the township. Reminicscing of the Drum newsroom, Peter Magubane has described it as "a different home; it did not have apartheid. There was no discrimination in the offices of DRUM magazine. It was only when you left DRUM and entered the world outside of the main door that you knew you were in Apartheid land" DRUM magazine became the breeding ground for many of South Africa's celebrated Black journalists of the time, including Henry Nxumalo, Can Themba, Todd Matshikiza, Nat Nakasa and Casey Motsisi, amongst many others. Popular, iconic photographers of the time included German photographer Jürgen Schadeberg (who arrived from Berlin in 1950), Alf Khumalo and Peter Magubane. Drum was distributed in 8 different African countries, including Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (later to split into three countries post-independence: Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi), Kenya, Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania), Uganda, Nigeria,Ghana and Sierra Leone.
In 2005, the South African Order of Ikhamanga in Silver was postumously bestowed onto Henry Nxumalo in recognition of his invaluable contribution to journalism in South Africa.
