”Jason, look at me!!”
I started this last year for Dead on MAYn day 3 for the prompt “Jason and Danny get stuck in a coffin together”, but I never got to a point where I was really happy with it then, but I took another crack at it yesterday and here we are 👏 (we're doing the Dead on MAYn event again this year check it out here)
Also I wanted to just write a little scene to go with this but ended up with an entire oneshot: Jason groaned as he slowly came to. Fuck, his head hurt. Apparently Jason Todd also needed to wear a helmet these days. Something plush was pushing against his shoulders, and he couldn’t quite straighten them properly.
Also something, or rather somebody was lying on him. That was a head on his chest, and legs tangled with his own. If not for the fact he could feel them breathing they could have been dead.
What in the world was going on?
Opening his eyes did nothing. It was completely dark. He reached up with his hands and all too soon they hit plush satiny fabric. Jason froze.
No.
It couldn’t be.
Desperately, he felt all around the ceiling of the too small padded box he was in. He couldn’t think about what it actually was. Because it couldn’t be! He pushed and nothing gave. No no no. This couldn’t happen. Not again.
Jason couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t breathe! He wheezed desperately pulling in air. Was he already out of oxygen? Bright dots swam in his vision. His heart pounded in his ears too loud in the silence.
He had to get out before it was too late!
He punched and pounded and scratched. But there was too little room. He couldn’t get a proper grip. Despair was like shadowy claws around his neck dragging him down. He was going to die here. He’d escaped once, but this time the coffin would keep him. Buried, slowly asphyxiating, consumed by worms and maggots, until there was nothing left.
“Jason, look at me!!” A glowing face suddenly pushed right up in front of him.
Jason stared in shock at the green eyed apparition.
“Hey,” the voice was softer this time and he felt cool gloved hands holding his head, thumbs gently rubbing the skin near his temples. “Are you with me now, Jason?”
Jason blinked, and suddenly the glowing face turning into vaguely familiar features.
“Danny?” Jason croaked. His throat hurt! Had he been screaming without even realizing?
Danny’s features softened into a smile. “Yeah it’s me. With a glow up, but still me.”
Jason did not know Danny very well, but he’d liked him well enough. He wondered hysterically if Tim knew the WE engineer he’d assigned to help Jason with the community center project could do this.
“Jason breathe with me.” He demonstrated with a deep breath that pressed their chests together.
Slowly, Jason took a deep breath and blew it out. There were less spots in his vision now.
“That’s it. Deep breaths. We’re okay.”
Jason shook his head. “Gonna run out of air.”
“No we’re not. We’re moving Jason, can you feel that? We’re in a car.”
And now that Danny had pointed it out he could feel the slight irregular trembling signifying they were driving slowly.
Jason nodded not trusting his voice. He glanced away, angry at himself for being weak and not realizing, for panicking over nothing - only to see the padded insides of the coffin reflecting blue-green in Danny’s light, his breath hitched. Quickly, he forced himself to look only at Danny - ethereal, glowing Danny with white starlight hair, beautiful and looking untouchable like a mirage, except he was pressed right against Jason, solid, but cool like a gust of wind on a warm day. And okay yeah, Jason could focus on Danny.
Danny blew cool air into Jason’s face in a sigh of relief, leaning his forehead on Jason’s and relaxing his body more fully onto Jason. He closed his eyes.
“You’re okay.” And this time it felt like he was reassuring himself.
Jason let his cramping grip on the plush ceiling go and hesitantly moved them to rest against Danny’s back, rubbing slightly in a hopefully soothing manner. The smooth fabric was skintight and didn’t leave anything to the imagination, a big difference from the loose graphic Tee-cardigan combo he’d worn the couple of times they’d met to discuss the project including today. Jason felt his cheeks warm.
“Not how I wanted to get into close quarters with you,” Danny huffed a breathless little laugh and moved back a few inches, enough that Jason could meet his half-lidded eyes.
“You wanted to get into close quarters with me?” Jason felt embarrassed by how rusty his voice was and swallowed thickly. He’d not even realized or considered Danny could have any interest in him.
Danny’s teeth flashed white in a sharp smile and his eyebrows - somehow still black - did a silly little wiggle. Jason couldn’t help his amused huff.
“Sure did - do. Maybe somewhere a bit less traumatizing for the both of us?”
Jason’s breath hitched as he remembered just what their situation was. “I think I’d like that.”
Danny looked dumbfounded at him for a moment as if he couldn’t believe Jason would actually want to spend time with him. When Jason was the one who couldn’t believe Danny wanted to spend time with him.
“Well,” Danny said clearing his throat. His cheeks took on a green tint, was he blushing? “Maybe I should see if they prepared to capture a ghost or the coffin was incidental then?”
“What?”
“I can maybe get us out.”
“You couldn’t have lead with that?!”
“I was a bit distracted!” With Jason panicking, he didn’t have to say and Jason immediately felt bad. “Also this thing is doing a number on me. I kinda just-“ His jaw opened in a big sudden yawn, before continuing- “wanna go to sleep.”
He shook his head as if to clear it. “I don’t really want to think about what would have happened had you not been here.”
And yeah, while very different, the idea of just falling asleep in here was chilling and not one Jason wanted to even contemplate.
“Alright do it then.”
Danny’s eyes snapped to Jason startled, as if he’d been lost in thought - or about to fall asleep. “Do what?”
“See if you can get us out of here.”
“Oh right. One second, gonna check if the coast is clear.” And with that Danny’s head disappeared and his upper body shifted, so that Jason could have imagined him sticking his head through the lid of the coffin if it’d been visible… Ghost indeed. It was only a moment and Danny was back inside and looking much more awake.
“They have us in a hearse. I suppose that’s one way to transport a coffin inconspicuously. But why? A crate in a truck would have done just as well?”
“Danny, if you can get us out of here, I’d appreciate it now.”
“Of course! just hang on.”
Jason didn’t let that be said twice. He tightened his grip around Danny’s back and next thing he knew the most curious liquid cool sensation came over him and the coffin moved forward without them. Jason only barely saw the white ceiling of the hearse before they were outside in Gotham’s familiar smoggy air. Danny righted them and flew up a bit higher.
“Do you wanna follow? We’re invisible right now, they won’t be able to see us.”
What Jason wanted was to go back to his apartment and take a shower until he ran out of hot water, maybe interrogate Danny a bit because what the fuck, and then maybe figure out if Danny’s green blush went down further.
But Jason needed to figure out who did this, who put Jason in a fucking coffin again - and then try to resist putting them in a coffin.

It turned out it was Two-Face. Of course… It was Jason Todd who was targeted not Red Hood, which meant Bruce was the real target. Two-Face was on the outs with Harvey, so he wanted to hurt Bruce to hurt Harvey. It was just Jason’s luck he’d recently officially come back to life, giving Two-Face a lovely target to hurt Bruce.
He couldn’t even have been targeted for his own sake; Jason felt so tired. And poor Danny had just been pulled along as collateral.
It was funny at least to see their faces when they opened the still locked coffin only to find it empty. Didn’t make up for the experience, but he’d take what he could get.
“Should we take care of them?” Danny whispered, from where he’d resorted to just holding Jason’s hand to keep them both invisible and floating.
Jason shook his head no. Bruce could clean up his own mess.
“Let’s just go back.”

Back in the building that would one day soon be renovated and turned into a community center, they managed to find both their phones, just tossed aside carelessly.
Jason took a moment to send Bruce a text to update him on the Two-Face situation and tell him to deal with it before someone else got kidnapped. He slipped the phone into a pocket ignoring the vibration as it instantly started to ring. Jason smiled grimly and turned around to face Danny-
Danny who was back to his messy black hair and loose clothing. The graphic Tee that had a cartoon ghost and the words “who ghost there?” underneath, made so much more sense now. He looked up at Jason from under his fringe uncertainly. Shifting his weight from foot to foot.
“So, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t tell anyone about the whole…” He vaguely indicated himself with a wave of his hand.
Jason rolled his eyes because that really went without saying. Danny had a lot of explaining to do, but first- Jason grabbed Danny’s hand and tugged him along.
“Come on Spooky, let’s find some less traumatic close quarters.”
The startled squeak made Jason smile.

I didn't expect the story to go that direction, it was much more angsty when I was drawing the picture, but this was the story that wanted to be told today. Besides a story in which they were in a ghost proof coffin would take longer to tell XD Gonna let this rest for a week or two then give it an edit before putting it on Ao3.
As always I'd love to hear what you all thought, so tell me if you have the time <3
