Could you explain captivity a little? My mom wouldn't let me go anywhere without her say so, and then wouldn't respond until any opportunity to go out was long since passed. At 16 years old there was a three month period where I wasn't allowed outside at all, and many more times when I was just rarely let out, and not allowed to see friends. This was traumatic for sure, I have agoraphobia from it, but I'm not sure if it would count as captivity?
It sounds like your experience was traumatic and has left a lasting impact on your life. I think what you are describing could in part be defined as “domestic captivity”.
In her book, Trauma and Recovery, Judith Herman describes domestic captivity as the state of being captive in ones home. She states, “In domestic captivity, physical barriers to escape are rare.n In most homes, even in the most oppressive, there are no bars on the windows, no barbed wire fences… The barriers to escape are generally invisible. They are none the less, extremely powerful. Children are rendered captive by their dependency.”
If this feels true for you, then it would seem like appropriate language to define your experience.
