When you are born into neglect, you learn to provide for yourself rather quickly.
Don grew up somewhere on the edge of Tennessee, gifted to St. Elizabeth’s Nunnery at 12:35 AM, two days after he was conceived into the world. He’s tagged with a note—an explanation of sorts, consisting of an apology and a plea for the convent to take him in and treat him as their own—left on the curb of a shitty sidewalk and framed with the soggy cigarette butts that stick to the pavement. The roar of an engine signals his abandonment to the neighborhood, who promptly close open curtains and dim dining room lights, protected from the responsibility of such a tragedy by chipping white-picket fences and blind eyes.
So, like any baby would, he cries, and he cries, until he is finally plucked off the street by a Sister who clutches him to her chest and soothes his aching lungs. The circumstance borne onto her is unfortunately common; it has been made clear that no other witness is willing of accepting a child from such dire and dark context, so, she does.
Her generosity does not grant him the most conventional childhood, despite all her efforts.
Early years are spent with slaps on the wrist and grace of God at his bedside, crosses nailed above all clocks and teachings confined within the rickety walls of a dying ideology. Maternal doting fades as he grows from tykehood, left rather empty and rather quiet—in fact, he is suspected to be mute due to a serious lack of social skills. Don doesn’t assume it’s at the fault of the Church for prioritizing certain practices before the quality of his upbringing, and learns to be grateful for what they do provide for him outside the realm of familial attention and affection.
However, the corrupt creeps in and claims the innocence of his indifference.
He’s a teenager when the vice grip of religion lessens. CPS gets involved in his case, something about a ‘report from a neighbor’, resulting in being tugged from the tethers of his Sisters and thrown into the foster system with a relentless haste. Relocation lands him more towards the border of Illinois, newly 15, about to tackle the first year of high school—that is when he is introduced to the grittiness of puberty and rebellion, hopping from house to house, family to family. The itch for attachment sticks him to the wrong people, washed up in the wrong places, addicted to the wrong things at the wrong time. Overwhelmed with the influence of those his own age, Don reflects on it as a blur, erased from his mind by choice because he does not want come to terms with the reality of his degeneracy. He’s now feigning ignorance under the eyes of Him for sake of self-acceptance, and it’s a sick, twisted inner-working of his mind that can only be blamed on his inability to process emotion. His affiliations, what they once were, are dropped in hopes of never being picked up again. All connections, disregarded. He is born anew, alight in the eyes of an entirely different crowd, working towards credence and offering open arms to those who come into the Church and crave the same exoneration. Don chases after the only thing he’s ever known and holds onto it like it is the last chance he has at true remission and forgiveness.
FOR MY FATHER AND MY MOTHER HAVE FORSAKEN ME, BUT THE LORD WILL TAKE ME IN.

Struck with grief and paranoia, Don is the equivalent to a frightened animal. He does not connect easily with people and does not wish to, taking on the lifestyle of a recluse in hopes that he will find redemption with isolation. A very easy man to tempt, the throes of youth still interest him, and most likely always will—he is desperate to feel something past his intense necessity for clemency. All interactions with patrons of the Church are brief and polite, but his disposition is naturally brooding and unsettling to reside around for long periods of time. He hosts, in every sense, the aura of a sinner.
Don’s actions outside the omnipotence of God were deeply regrettable, as previously mentioned; indulgence in sex, violence, drugs. It’s quite possible that he landed himself with an addiction before going completely cold-turkey and leaving it all behind, which is something he struggles coping with and has yet to come clean about to anyone. Shaky, monotonous and observant, he prides himself on his ability to comfort those who comes to him with ease; for as debauched as he once was, he is entirely too raw to turn away faith (even if he is using it as an excuse to curb self-hatred and exhausting guilt, and does not have a true belief in the Holy Father, Son or Spirit).

Throwback! This post contains photos from two buffets my friends and I tried out last year. Both dates happened on June (yup not even recently hah) and my tummy was really happy that month. Due to lack of time and pump to blog (I was in hiatus for six months!), I was not able to share what went on when we tried out these two affordable eat-all-you-can. And since it’s been so long, I think I can’t give a decent review of these places already. Just enjoy the photos I took!
For those who have a sweet tooth, Gillian Gail Dessert Buffet is definitely for you! For only P299, enjoy a wide variety of desserts from cakes to bakes to candies to even ice cream and macarons.
Panna Cotta
Gillian Gail also serves Palitaw and other Pinoy desserts. This isn’t on their spread and needs to be ordered.
Macarons are some expensive treats so these are one of their sulit items. However, these sweets also need to be ordered. There’s no additional fee for orders, tho. These items aren’t just on their spread.
To break the sweetness, the place also serves nachos, fish balls, and siomai (which we loved, btw).
For K-pop and K-drama fans, Don Day will give you a feast of Korean food. Their main attraction are their grill tables where customers get to cook samgyupsal. There are a looooooooot more Korean food options aside from their famous pork strips, all for P299.
The thrill behind this buffet is that you get to eat Korean food even without knowing what they are called. lol That is if you’re not familiar with Korean food. The spread isn’t labeled so you get to eat with pure instinct.
Colorful!

I hope my friends and I get to try more affordable buffets this year. If you guys have suggestions, just TA me. For the love of food!
