In 1938 Bronislaw Malinowski went on sabbatical from the LSE to Yale, in the US. When World War II broke out he was advised to stay in the US rather than risk the Atlantic crossing back to the UK. As a result he took a permanent position at Yale and began fieldwork in Oaxaca, Mexico. He died in 1942 after two summers of fieldwork. His collaborator, Alfonso Villa Rojas, would go on to be one of the greatest Mexican anthropologists of his generation, and their work was published in Spanish. It was not until 1982 that it was published in English.

In ancient Egyptian days, women were viewed and honored as higher and more sacred than a man. The woman is the mother to all, giving life and teaching. The ancients believed that when a man were to achieve a high amount of knowledge, spirituality, and power that he would be allowed to wear a long haired wig to symbolize that he had reached a certain level of that equal to a woman. As the two stand together, she holds her man, giving him strength and protection. There is a saying still floating around in present day: “behind every successful man is a strong woman holding him up.”~ And its made me remember of something that I read in a book which I believe goes well with it: “Man cannot find his reason for being by himself, and he hates to be alone. On the other hand, a woman must discover her nature by herself. If she waits for a man to discover her, she will find herself through his reflection only, and will never be happy. A woman is a whole being without a man, but a man is only half a person without a woman. It is the woman who chooses her mate, as her instinct is much sharper than ours, for a man`s judgement is always clouded by desire.” ~Don Manuel, Q'ero elder and medicine man

Don Manuel stopped me, pointed at her, and said, 'Look, you'd think time had stopped, it's as though that girl had been there for ever, standing just as she is, and singing just as she is, and as though she had to go on being there for ever, as was when my consciousness began, as she will be when it comes to an end. Along with the rocks, the clouds, the trees, the waters, that country girl is part of nature and not of history.' How Don Manuel feels for nature, and how he brings it to life! I shall never forget the day when it snowed and he said to me, 'Have you seen, Lazaro, a greater mystery than that of the snow falling on the lake and dying in it while it covers the mountain with its hood?'"
