In the vein of Guest’s other mockumentaries, this one shines a light on the world of competitive mascot…ing(? is there a word for that?) Compared to some of his earlier work (This is Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Almost Heroes…) this one felt like one of the later Scary Movie movies, there were funny parts, but it wasn’t as sharp, dark or deep as it’s predecessors, not saying I wouldn’t watch it again, but if forced to choose I’d pick earlier material. #ChrisODowd’s character was humorous, the British hedgehog guy seemed like a combination of Martin Freeman and Ricky Gervais (and I wanted to see him do something else with that ladder), the TV network intern was a bit odd, but their talking about the shows they’d produced(?)/had been involved with made me laugh a little; the #EdBegleyJr and #JaneLynch power struggle was amusing because of how absurdish her character was, I found the Murray’s slightly grating (and I’m not sure how an octopus and a turtle go together…was that whale conversation? i think i might have missed something.) The routines were interesting - but would they have done these on the sidelines? The added touch of the tire treads on the armadillo costume? morbidly funny 😬🙈 but that routine - man. The international (Non-American/Non-British) mascots were interesting - and getting more background or a talking head segment from any of them would’ve been nice. #ssmovieof2016 #comedy #ZachWoods #WayneWilderson #SarahBaker #MichaelHitchcock #TomBennett #KerryGodliman #ParkerPosey #ChristopherMoynihan #JohnMichaelHiggins #MariaBlasucci #JenniferCoolidge #BobBalaban #HarryShearer #NelsonCheng #DonLake #SusanYeagley #FredWillard #BradWilliams writers: #ChristopherGuest #JimPiddock director: Christopher Guest movie of 2016 number 48) #Mascots
