The musical origins of Donn T, the Philadelphia-born product of “somewhat avant-garde” parents”, are the definition of a family affair.
Her grandfather helped birth the genres of doo-wop and soul as a member of the classic hard gospel outfit The Dixie Hummingbirds and her brother is the multi-talented television drummer and TV star ?uestlove.
She composed her first piece at the early age of nine, an understandable development for an artist who has spent her life immersed in creation for as long as she can remember.
She tells Converse Rubber Tracks “You were a kid, but you were running the lights in the back with the light guy.” Her easy familiarity with the artistic world has freed Donn T from the endless pressures of the musical rat-race: “I’ve just always been around innovation, so I never had awareness of competitiveness.”
Always pushing to make her genre-jumping sound rise above the fray, an authentic and effortless style is the essential mark of the Donn T experience.
