Okay this is...an *incredible* answer, because when I heard this I immediately thought of my RSVP-writing playlist which has that same sort of underbeat to much of it. Most of the playlist has a higher melody but the beat is spot-on.

OH MAN. I hope you wanted an essay because that is what you’re getting. :D
I actually got most of what I wanted in there; most of the pieces are “I want to write this line/scene (and a lot of times it is a particular line I write around), how do I make this work.” And I have been known to recycle bits that get cut from what I’m currently writing into later pieces where they fit better. For example, this line was published in part 9 - Rules of Engagement:
“After that Jack had sworn never again, but god, he never thought he could feel this way again about someone who wasn’t Angel, like Rhys doesn’t even need to ask because Jack will say yes anyway, whatever it is.”
But I actually wrote it a couple months earlier, in what became part 4 - Table for Two. It was right in the end scene where Rhys tells Jack he’s getting things right, but it felt too heavy too fast for Jack at that time. But I really liked it, the idea that Jack had kind of given up on that kind of feeling until Rhys came along, so I copied and pasted it into another doc and saved it until I found a place where it fit.
There were some scenes that never quite made it in, or were significantly changed for the final version:
I wanted to write their first “real” date at some point, but since I was fixing the early parts of this series around calendar dates it never quite worked out. VIP ends on Dec 31st and Table for Two takes place on/around Feb 14th; their first “real date” is somewhere in early January.
There was originally a scene right in the middle of Table for Two that was Rhys receiving all of Jack’s gifts and being (reasonably) bemused. I cut it because it stole the thunder of the dinner scene and that definitely had to be from Jack’s perspective.
Back when I was still writing this around holidays I considered an Easter fic where Jack has been provisionally invited back to the family gatherings because they hear he’s doing much better since he started dating that nice boy. This was literally inspired by me being in the grocery store and seeing all those baskets and fake grass and etc, and my brain said “what kind of basket would Angel get” (Angel was much younger in this version). It’s mostly his ex’s family and they’re inviting Jack pretty much purely for Angel’s sake; his ex-wife means well but the rest of the family has definitely not forgiven him and it’s kind of awful. I scrapped it because a) I’ve never written children before, b) I wasn’t sure I could successfully represent those kinds of dynamics, c) the premise didn’t really fit with the way Jack and Rhys’ relationship was progressing OR Jack’s arc before the story starts. Jack doesn’t get his shit together because of Rhys; he does that on his own, before they meet.
I had actually intended part 10/the epilogue to be The Wedding (and in fact it is still titled that in my google docs) but @scootsaboot wrote such an amazing wedding fic in “save that heart for me” that it has supplanted all domestic au wedding fics in my head. It is the wedding fic. And so the epilogue is going to be a little different. Also, I have two other weddings (jesus) in fic drafts that I can hopefully get to over the summer. Also also, Rules of Engagement is meant to be the narrative conclusion, and following it up with an actual wedding fic kind of detracts from that, in my mind.
That’s all I can think of off the top of my head - what’s funny (to me) is that the later parts were easier to write completely than the earlier ones. For each of the first three or four parts I thought that each one was going to be the last, and I definitely thought Table for Two was the last one in that series, but I just kept writing endings that just…kept…going… So the last 4-5 parts - to my eyes, at least - have much more of an arc than the first ones do.
