There were seldom people Jane was interested in being paired up with—Darlene was their top contender because of how detailed her notes were. Vita was a perfectionist and would understand and appreciate how Jane’s brain functioned. Juicy was always nice to Jane, they’d settle for working with her despite the fact that she happened to be a little bit of a ditz.
They bit down on their bottom lip hard enough to draw blood when both of their top two choices were taken by people not nearly as smart as them. Jane slumped down in their seat and awaited their terrible fate.
“Juicy and Mia, Jane and Briar,” their teacher read off in a monotone voice. Hearing their partner's name, Jane wanted to turn into a puddle and hide in their Docs once reality hit them like a bus.
Briar. They had to work with Briar. Out of everyone in the class, that’s what their teacher chose for them?
Jane turned their head around to check if their new partner even made it to class that morning. Her seat in the back row was empty a good eighty percent of the time and when she was sitting in it, it was after she arrived ten minutes late on a good day.
She was there, in all her glory. Face ghostly white, unnaturally so given her tan skin that showed through her fishnet top. Her brown eyes seemed to shimmer, although maybe it was the strong lighting of the classroom. Even with something so unflattering she still looked good. Her strong and intricate black smokey eye that trailed into harsh eyeliner and dark brows and lips was hard to not stare at. She smiled at Jane as their gazes met, uncharacteristically warm given her usual apathy or indifference to the mere concept of being in class. Jane turned around to face the whiteboard when they made eye contact. Something about Briar intimidated them but they couldn’t place their finger on it. There was no logical reason for the feelings; the best they could do was internalize them until they wrapped up their science project and could return to being classmates who don’t interact.
