I've just encountered a casually sexist, or even benevolently sexist, dude at work and cant seem to get over it. like, when you stay in your bubble for so long that you forget that this type of sexism still exists? blows my mind every time I guess
some of the ridiculous takes he had: that it was weird that a gIrL (it was a grown ass woman) trained with men in a fantasy setting (yep, women training was more unrealistic than all the magic and shit), and claiming that the protagonist of another piece is "clearly written by a girl" because *drumroll* the male protagonist prefers semi-dry wine! (and not because he knows that the author was a woman, of course)
the conclusion was that "girls" should like female characters. not sure how this coexists in his mind with his admiration of ursula le guin…
like, I dont think I experienced such depths of literary analysis even in high school…
and the icing on the cake, the dude's writing is extremely formulaic and hits every worn-out stereotype possible, gendered or not
I mean, its ridiculous, I know its totally ridiculous, but somehow, its still infuriating
