❝ Why does that bother you? It’s not as if you know these people. ❞
And by god, based on the warmth in his tone and the patient smile on his face, the question is genuine. He understands, on a factual basis, why people desire acceptance from others around them, but it’s never clicked for Henry. Why spend his time vying for a stranger’s approval when he could be doing whatever the hell he wants to do? This thirst for positive attention from others has never sat well with him — even as somebody who has wanted to belong, at least to a small group.

❝ I don’t look at you like that. ❞
It isn’t up for debate. There’s no question about it: Henry knows what it’s like to be different; understands the brunt of highschool cruelty, has seen the scum that lives in most. Why would he judge people in the very way that he resents being judged?
❝ There are others like me; others that don’t care.
I’m sure you’ll find them some day. ❞
