“I didn’t realize it until now, but I don’t really know anything about them, or what kind of people they are, really. You can’t see inside a person’s heart.” - Battle Royale, Koushun Takami
spontaneous decisions are unwise. regardless of whether they come from determination or desperation, they are a bad idea. despite that, however, kyungsoo finds himself hauling a two-by-two cardboard box around the city, weaving through alleys and underneath bus shelters to rescue as many strays as he can safely hold. after scrambling about since before daylight struck the first skyscraper, he’s managed to gather seven hyperactive kittens into the box, and one mixed-breed dog with fur so untidy that he mistook it for a dirty hand towel follows close at his heels. apparently, the little thing has become quite fond of the company, but kyungsoo knows that he can’t keep it for long. it wouldn’t be fair to the puppy.
craning his neck at an awfully uncomfortable angle, he clumsily wipes the perspiration from his temple and crosses the street without waiting for the walk signal. inside the box, the kittens mew in a chorus and attempt to climb over one another to see what is happening outside, and the boy has to use one hand to urge them back into safety, earning several cries of protest and yet more fidgeting. the puppy, thankfully, is quiet as it remains nearby, still set on following him everywhere. as the sun overhead reaches its apex, he reluctantly approaches the first stranger he can find–a girl who appears to be around his age, seemingly harmless, though he can never tell for sure these days.
“excuse me,” he starts quietly, then tips his head to the box in his hands, “d’you know where, um, the nearest animal shelter is? i gotta get these guys there before they all close.”
