Can you explain the term redshift and any relation it may have to photons/light?
All colors of light have a corresponding wavelength, similar to sound waves. Under different circumstances, this wavelength can be stretched or squeezed, turning it into a different color. If the wavelength is stretched, it’s redshifted, and if it’s squeezed, it’s blueshifted.
You’ve probably already experienced this with sound, actually. When a car passes by, you may notice that it sounds higher-pitched when it’s coming towards you, and lower-pitched as it’s traveling away. Basically, the sound waves are getting squeezed together as the car approaches you, and getting stretched out as the car leaves. Thanks for asking!
