"That was the sweet thing about it. The whole thing was because some guy playing pool made some comment about some girl that Elliott found offensive. It wasn't about the pool game or money on the pool table or something like that. Just that some guy made a shitty comment about a girl and Elliott just lost it. I guess they kind of pushed each other around, and then I think Elliott punched him, and then he got pushed down and ended up falling down onto a pint glass, which is how he got his back cut up so bad. And in typical Elliott fashion he refused to go to the hospital. He refused to do any of the things you're supposed to do when you have pieces of pint glass in your back."

"Elliott and I used to spend a lot of time with my old friend Josh. He and Elliott became really close when he moved to New York; I introduced them. There was this lame Monday-night hipster party at this place I refused to go to 'cause it was kind of ridiculous. It was around the time of Good Will Hunting, and he had asked Elliott if he would DJ this party. They took some of my records and went and did their DJ thing. When they came home, I guess I was still awake, so it couldn't have been that late.
They came home and they were really, really upset, but in a sort of comical way. They both walked in the house and I was like, 'How was it?' Kind of making fun of them for even participating in the event. Elliot was like, 'You tell her!' and then Josh was like, 'No, you tell her.'
'What happened?' They both started telling me this story. 'Well, we were taking a bread from DJing, and Gus came over and introduced us to [a macho actor who shall remain nameless]. Then Gus walked away. So we were standing with this guy, and nobody really had anything to say to each other.' And I guess, in a moment of silence, trying to make conversation, [actor guy] looks around the room and looks back to them and says, "There sure are a lot of hot sluts here tonight, aren't there?"
They were so bummed. They were legitimately very, very upset. I thought it was so funny when they told me. They were like, 'It's not funny! It's horrible! It's a horrible thing to say!'"

"One of the first photos I took of Elliott was on the street here in New York. He lifted up the back of his shirt so I could take a picture of the cuts he had on his back from a fight he'd been in. ...
All I remember is that he said, "I was in a bar and I called this guy an asshole ... 'cause he was!" "

… it would infuriate him when people asked him what his lyrics were about. He really hated having to have an answer for what every character and every story was. Music was a way of channeling thoughts and feelings that were bigger than him into art, and he didn’t feel like he owed every single person an explanation of what everything was about.
