I will unfortunately never be normal about these two. The yearning in Ismark's eyes. The horrors in Doru's. I just want the best for this sweet golden retriever and his sad vampire boyfriend. 😭

Doru doesn’t want to admit that anything about his current predicament is something he should feel grateful for. But a fierce ache takes root inside him, and for the first time that he can remember, he’s at least somewhat glad he’s here, and that there are some idiots here with him who insist on loving him even when doing so has brought them nothing but trouble.

𝐒𝐔𝐌𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐘: The devil Strahd has been slain and the mists cutting Barovia off from the world have lifted. For Ismark Kolyanovich, this is met with mixed emotions as his best friend Doru—a rebel who was turned into a vampire spawn—remains cursed. (The soft lighting. The warm colors. The cheek nuzzling. Ismark's floofy hair. Doru's smug grin. I love them your honor.)

Street lamps spot the cobbled road, and overhead, the sky is clear. Numerous stars wink down. Doru tilts his head back and smiles up to them, feeling surprisingly at ease.

From the corner of his eye, he catches Ismark staring over Soris’s head. He quickly diverts his gaze, but it’s too late.

Doru grins. “Oh no, you don’t.”

He rounds behind Ismark, leaps onto his back, and hooks his legs around Ismark’s waist. Ismark catches him—like he’s always done—and Doru drops his arms around Ismark’s neck. Soris laughs while Escher scoffs to hide a smirk.

“Thinking about me, golden boy?” Doru goads.

“Seems I’m always thinking about you, unholy terror.”

“Oh yeah? What's it this time?”

He feels Ismark tense before he says roughly, “That I... I’m glad you’re happy.”

An ache squeezes in Doru’s core. He sets his chin atop Ismark’s head and breathes in the hearty scent of the blood rushing through his skull. “You could be happy, too, you know. If Bildrath’s still giving you a hard time, just say the word, and I… I’ll…”

“You’ll what?”

“I’ll hide cups of milk around his store in places he’ll never find them until after they’ve soured. Then his store will smell as wretched as his attitude.”

Ismark laughs, but Doru can tell it’s half-hearted. “I wish it were that simple.” He sighs.

In the bed beside Ismark, a lump stirs but doesn’t wake.

Doru is lying on his back with his elbows glued to his sides. It’s an odd position. Doru was always a side sleeper. Whenever Ismark shared a mattress with him at the church, they ended up curled away from one another with their backs pressed together, Doru snoring loudly. But now, Doru’s uncannily silent and sleeping with the same unsettling peacefulness that overcame Kolyan when he finally succumbed to his illness.

Ismark’s heart winds tightly, and he can’t stop himself from leaning in. Doru isn’t breathing. He’s completely, unnervingly still. Ismark resists the urge to shake him, just to make sure he’s still alive, and then he curses himself. Of course he isn’t alive. He doesn’t need to breathe. Doru is, by every medical definition, dead.

And yet, for a few moments yesterday, when Doru was joking around and even smiling a little, Ismark almost managed to forget…

🦇 Just Some Dorumark Fluff for the Timeline (Bat!Doru WIP) 🦇

Doru’s grin splits into the feral, toothy thing that Ismark loves so much, then he throws his arms around Ismark’s neck, driving him into the headboard. They both laugh through their kisses. Ismark feels a static charge in each place where Doru’s eager fingers brush his skin. He’s hanging on as if for dear life, and Ismark holds him steady, his arms open to embrace the boy who somehow manages to shine more brightly than a sun he’s never felt.
