  The company Dot One is unleashing our DNA, the code that makes us human, into designs that are as individual as their owners. Beginning with a simple cheek swab, the company uses the sequencing of your DNA to make patterned scarves and other products. When the DNA is visualized, the gene patterns can be clearly seen, and familial relationship show themselves as pattern similarities.

Since the advent of direct-to-consumer personal genome tests like 23andMe, it’s simpler than ever to access information about your individual DNA sequence — that 0.1% of genetic coding that distinguishes you from the rest of humanity. But deciding what you do with this information can still be a complicated process. You could use this data to track down your birth parents, or to discover you’re descended from ancient royalty, or to find out if you’re prone to various diseases. Or, you could go the more fun route of London-based company Dot One and visualize this data as unique, arty patterns on scarves, posters, and family trees.

Thanks to the Human Genome Project, we know that all humans share approximately 99.9 percent of their DNA in common. That leaves .1 percent of the genetic code to distinguish you from everyone else.

Iona Inglesby is a designer from London, who has created a company that highlights those genetic differences. Called Dot One (a reference to the .1 percent of our genetic code that’s unique), the company takes information from a cheek swab and turns it into glitchy representations of a human’s DNA on scarves, posters, and family trees.

Le projet Dot One a été imaginé par la graphiste londonienne Iona Inglesby, qui s’intéresse très généralement à la rencontre entre le design et les sciences. Ce projet en est la preuve, car il permet de retranscrire graphiquement l’ADN humain. En effet, chaque être humain a un ADN qui diverge de 0,01% des autres humains, et c’est ce pourcentage que la graphiste a voulu faire ressortir. C’est grâce à un algorithme que l’on peut découvrir ces séquences d’ADN, ce qui aboutit à des trames colorées et régulières, personnelles, qui peuvent être utilisées sur textile.
