Episode 13:
Yoo Ji went to report to her work in the news station the next morning. It was really cold but Yoo Ji’s mood was very high. She was smiling and grinning at everyone. She went to meet with her supervisor to hand in all her work for the last 10 months. She sent him updates while she was in Urk but the articles she wrote were printed and in a formal envelope to hand in.
“Good morning” she greeted him at his desk.
“Hello, Mun Yoo Ji,” he responded, “take a seat” he gestured to the chair in front of him. She bowed and took a seat.
“I thank you for your hard work in Urk, and hope you keep that work ethic going now that you’re back” he started, Yoo Ji’s smile dimmed just a little. Her supervisor complimenting her work was a rare occurrence but it also means that he bears news.
“Thank you, and of course” she responded, keeping her tone light and formal.
“While you were gone, I had a few reporters try to take this case, but they haven't found anything useful that we can use,” he started to brief her. Yoo Ji realized that he wanted her to take another assignment. Usually, she would get a little break, but today is not the case as it seems. Yoo Ji nodded her head.
“Here is the folder that we have so far” he handed her an envelope, as she took it she felt that it was too light. Yoo Ji would have to fix that.
“I expect you to do your best” he finished as he looked at her with a hard stare.
“Of course, I will do my best,” Yoo Ji responded. She got up and bowed and took her leave.
She went to her desk, which was more like a cubicle than an actual desk. Her cubicle buddy peeked his head above the thin wall separating them.
“Yoo Ji! You’re back!” Jung Hye Jin exclaimed with enthusiasm.
“What’s up Jung?” Yoo Ji greeted.
“How was Urk? I heard that there was a lot to cover”
“It wasn’t too bad” Yoo Ji responded as she organized her desk and got out a few cleaning tools that she keeps in the bottom drawer of her desk. She keeps wipes and a dust Swiffer so when she comes back she can take care of the dust collecting on her desk and brush up her desk clean and start working again. She leaned back and observed the room, it seems everyone has not changed and still does what they have been doing.
Jung Hye Jin leaned over and whispered, “Dani broke up with her boyfriend, Steve is having problems with Mai over who will get to cover what issue tonight at 7 and Sung Ha is pregnant” he filled her in on how their co-workers are doing. Yoo Ji grinned at him and assessed each of the people they talked about. Dani looked exhausted and her face was a little swollen, she wasn’t wearing makeup either, Steve; the only foreigner that works at their station, was heatedly talking with Mai. Mai was rolling her eyes at the man and waving her hands discreetly. Sung Ha didn't look any different except Yoo Ji noticed that she walks a little slower and that her hands subconsciously keep brushing against her stomach.
“I have taught you well” Yoo Ji praised Hye Jin, although Hye Jin is a year older Yoo Ji had told him about a few pointers to improve his observation skills.
“So did you get the Armadillo case?” Hye jin asked curiously, Yoo Ji nodded taking out the file, she opened to find one single piece of paper. Yoo Ji raised an eyebrow.
“They didn't find out anything?”
“They don't even know if the crime was committed by a ghost or not,” Hye Jin scoffed. Yoo Ji groaned, she unlocked her phone and went to call Gwang Nam. She went outside to the office and into the lounge.
“Hello?” his voice came through.
“Please tell me you’re having a better time than I am” she rolled her eyes at the amount of digging she has to do when she goes back. She didn't even try to read the paper knowing how scarce the information is going to be.
“Are you okay? Are you injured?” he questioned with worry. Yoo Ji rolled her eyes extra hard this time.
“I am fine, I just got handed a case with nothing but one piece of paper and no background information.”
“Why do you always think I am in mortal danger? I am a reporter, not a special forces soldier” Yoo Ji joked.
“At this point are you not going to the police station? I assumed you were going to gather information using dangerous methods” he retorted back to her verbal jab.
“You know me too well” Yoo Ji smirked, she glanced at the door and asked him when his flight got back.
“In two days, I think it leaves at 3 AM but I am not sure. I’ll have to check it” he replied, she heard him shuffling paper on his end.
“Alright, just keep me updated, I have to go, I am meeting up with Mo Yeon for lunch”
“Alright, don’t make any trouble” Yoo Ji rolled her eyes, told him goodbye. Yoo Ji hung up and sighed, she’ll have to visit the police station.
“Was that your boyfriend?” Hye Jin teased as she sat back down at her desk.
“You could say that, but he could also be my drug dealer,” she said with a straight face, Hye Jin looked horrified, Yoo Ji broke out in a chuckle and told him she was just kidding.
“Yeah, I met him in Urk,”
“Oh, foreign man!”
“No he’s Korean, he was one of the soldiers stationed in the base I was at” she explained, taking the paper once more and skimming it, the victim died of blunt force to the head. Hye jin nodded, smiling cheekily but went back to his work.
The victim’s name is Lee Eun Ki and he’s 39 years old. Her eyes skimmed through the description of the crime scene, and what they were able to recover, her eyes found the detective assigned to the case and rolled her eyes. It was a rookie cop assigned to the case.
“I am heading to the police station” Yoo Ji informed Hye Jin, she grabbed her backpack.
“Greet Kang Rae Wook for me” Hye Jin yelled back as she got out the door.
Yoo Ji took the bus that went straight to the police station from her work, it took around 25 minutes to get there as there were three stops in between.
“I am here to interview Park Ji-Hun about the homicide of Lee Eun Ki” Yoo Ji informed the receptionist, she looked new, Yoo Ji peeked behind her to see if she could find anyone that she knew.
“He’s been taken off the case” the lady responded after looking it up on her desktop.
“Who has it then?” Yoo Ji questioned. The lady was about to read the name of the detective when a male’s voice cut in from behind Yoo Ji.
“I am the leading detective on that case now” Yoo Ji turned around and found Kang Rae Wook.
Kang Rae Wook is an old acquaintance of hers, he hates sharing information as much as he hates criminals. He is assigned difficult homicides all the time because his superiors hate him for his take-no-shit attitude. He is a middle-aged man, he can be seen as an attractive man but to Yoo Ji, he’s just an asshole that loves to withhold information when she investigates with him but he is an old friend and he has proved himself trustworthy on multiple occasions. Yoo Ji grinned.
“Hello Detective Kang, I am officially back” Yoo Ji exclaimed, she loves to annoy him, he’s very easily pissed off and Yoo Ji takes advantage of his short temper. It's been 10 months since she last saw him, and she might’ve not told him she was leaving so he looked very pissed off.
“Where the hell have you been?” Rae Wook asked signaling her to follow him down to his desk.
“I was assigned to a Korean base in Urk to cover their peace treaty efforts” Yoo Ji explained. Rae Wook looked at her with a deadpan look.
“How much trouble did you cause?”
“Hey! I am an angel, I didn't do anything...” she defended, trailing off.
“Three times but they weren't even completely my fault” she relented, telling him the truth.
“It was such a nice break from your nagging” Rae Wook sighed as they came to stop at his desk.
“Well, I am back now and you can't get rid of me” Yoo Ji grinned cheekily. She looked to the right side of his desk where his partner should be sitting.
“Where is Lee Hwa Dong?” she asked with a curious look at Hwa Dong’s desk. She got closer to inspect and flip open some folders on his desk when the said man walked in.
“No touching!” his deep voice startled Yoo Ji and she straightened her back and withdrew her hand.
“Hi!” she cheekily greeted, as the older man looked at her with raised eyebrows. She walked over and hugged him, his arms came around her.
Lee Hwa Dong was Kang Rae Wook’s partner, he is a man of few words, but he's very caring. Yoo Ji is almost like his little sister, they are very close. He is also one of the only ones that know about the Kim Hoon Jae case, he never brings it up and that makes Yoo Ji appreciate him even more. Lee Hwa Dong became Rae Wook’s partner after he got on the bad side of the chief and this partnership was his punishment, except they work great as a team and solve many of the hard cases they’re assigned.
Yoo Ji became their friend when she was tailing a suspect and they found her out. She befriended them, and Hwa Dong recognized her from the case. Since then she would hang out with them anytime they had the same case assigned and more often than not they work together since she deals with Armadillo cases in her station. The last time she had seen them was a few months before she left, she had written a particular article the higher-ups didn't like and her boss switched her to cover some petty fights between rich people which is why she was hanging out at the Haesung Hospital.
“I missed you, Firefly” he ruffled her hair, it was in a half up half down hairstyle with her bangs framing her face, but now it just looks like someone had flipped her hair upside down. Yoo Ji huffed and fixed her hair.
“I missed you too, but I definitely did not miss this” she pointed at her hair.
“Yoo Ji, why are you here?” Rae Wook said as he stared at Yoo Ji with a blank look.
“I got assigned another Armadillo case” Yoo Ji decided that she wouldn't beat around the bush and just told them why she’s here. She pulled out one piece of paper given to her by her boss.
“All they gave me was the autopsy report, which looks half-assed, to be honest,” she said as she handed Rae Wook the report.
“He only recorded vague descriptions, you need a new M.E.” Yoo Ji informed them.
“Lee Eun Ki, the probable cause of death is a blunt force to the back of the head” Rae Wook read out loud.
“M.E. also says that that's the only bruising he found on the body and I think that's bull” Yoo Ji continued.
“Okay, we’ll go talk with the M.E. to find out more” Hwa Dong decided. Yoo Ji’s phone rang, it was Gwang Nam. Yoo Ji quickly declined his call and texted him she’ll call him later.
“Who is that?” Hwa Dong asked.
“No one” Yoo Ji answered too fast, she mentally cringed.
“Oh, secret boyfriend” Rae Wook smirked. Yoo Ji stayed quiet not denying or confirming his assumption.
“I’ll go get his medical records to look them over. It will be just like old times!” Yoo Ji diverted the conversation away.
“He’s a doctor?” Hwa Dong teased.
“No, soldier, I was going to go have lunch with Mo Yeon anyway” Yoo Ji rolled her eyes, might as well tell them. They were going to meet him sooner or later.
“Alright disperse, keep us updated if you find anything” Rae Wook finalized, Yoo Ji bid them goodbye and left the police station.
Yoo Ji arrived at the hospital and went into the lobby to ask about Mo Yeon and where she would be. The nurse at the front desk told her that she’s probably in the cafeteria. When she spotted Mo Yeon and her friends, she went over to them. Mo Yeon sounded really angry on the phone, she slammed her phone down on the table.
“That sounds like a break up” Yoo Ji commented as Sang Hyun pulled a chair for her to sit in.
“Ugh, I can't believe I have to do this.” Mo Yeon groaned.
“Why? Captain Yoo isn't coming after all?” Doctor Song asked. Yoo Ji stole a part of someone's sandwich.
“What a shame!” Chi Hoon responded with a small smile on his face.
“Have you resigned yet?” Yoo Ji ignored the two men as they started snickering.
“Captain Yoo would be able to quickly go and get the resignation letter that's upstairs in the Chairman's office.” Chi Hoon answered while also not answering Yoo Ji’s question. He waved his snickers bar in front of his face.
“You got rejected for the loan,” Yoo Ji stated after swallowing the bite.
“Just go and plead.” Nurse Choi said.
“How can I go and plead after making such a scene?” Mo Yeon whined and Yoo Ji raised an eyebrow.
“I can’t believe I missed it!” Yoo Ji clicked her tongue in disappointment. Mo Yeon groaned and rested her forehead on the edge of the table.
“So then there's a professor's position available. Sweet.” Sang Hyun snapped his fingers.
“Then are you going to continue appearing on TV?” Sang Hyun continued to ask questions without letting Mo Yeon respond.
“Seriously, Sunbaenim.” Mo Yeon groaned, cutting off Sang Hyun’s ranting. The table rattled, Mo Yeon’s eyes widened, just like everyone else’s. Yoo Ji felt her heart jump into her throat and she held her breath as they all dived under the table. It took a few seconds for them to realize that it wasn't an earthquake but a few construction workers that were breaking up gravel on the main street.
“Damn it” Yoo Ji murmured as he heartbeat slowed down. A doctor passing by leaned down.
“Is there something down here?”
“I wish there was.” Doctor Song responded with a small laugh, which sounded more like an exhale of air to sound nonchalant.
“Should we try laughing like it was a joke?” Doctor Kang pondered
“No.” all five of them responded simultaneously. Mo Yeon nodded and they stood up and settled back into their seats.
After their lunch, Yoo Ji told them that she has to go to the lobby to get some information on a new case she has and so she parted with them.
“So what's the new case?” Nurse Choi asked.
“Deadman, no suspects” Yoo Ji responded as they walked to their destination.
“Interesting” Yoo Ji nodded with a small smile, it won't be a mystery any longer, she will get the medical records and have some clues on where to go from there.
“Can you give me the medical file on Lee Eun Ki?” Yoo Ji asked the receptionist.
“Are you related to him?” the nurse asked. Yoo Ji got out her badge, she had one made that mirrored Rae Wook’s and Hwa Dong’s. Yoo Ji doubts they knew about it but they will not be surprised.
“He’s dead, I need his medical records to investigate the cause of death,” Yoo Ji said with the most professional cop voice she could muster. Nurse Choi watched and shook her head. As soon as Yoo Ji got the file and the nurse left, Nurse Ha commented on Yoo Ji’s methods.
“You’ll get arrested for that”
“Not really, I’ve made friends with the whole police station” Yoo Ji stated, her eyes skimming through all the background information and all the other useless stuff. Her eyes caught on small details but it wasn't a big clue at all. The victim had a congenital disorder, it isn't specified which one which is strange usually it would say.
Yoo Ji focused on who she can talk to that would know his last interaction with any information about what kind of person he was. The important kind of background information, not this white noise that's been recorded. Yoo Ji quickly dialed Hwa Dong’s number, after the third ring he picked up. Nurse Choi waved at her as she left to receive the emergency victim that was coming in.
“Hello,”
“I got the relatives' information, but other than that, nothing really stands out” she informed him.
“The M.E. might not be sure if the blunt trauma was man inflicted, but the bruises on the face were definitely were and that's why he ruled it as a homicide.” Hwa Dong filled her in on their side of the investigation. There was a small pause before he spoke again with uncertainty in his voice.
“When we were down there, the M.E. told us that when he received the body, it seemed to be...too polished, almost like someone had cleaned up the evidence before he did”
“I’ll look into any of the family members that have a history with dead bodies, got it.” Yoo Ji nodded her head, she noticed Mo Yeon coming towards them. She hung up and watched as Mo Yeon put on gloves and started diagnosing the victim. Yoo Ji was still far enough that she can't hear them clearly, but it looks like she didn't get fired after all, just in the E.R. and Yoo Ji would bet that she was the on-call surgeon from now on. The chairman really had it out for her.
Mo Yeon acknowledged her as she got her gown and was explaining to Nurse Ha and Doctor Soong that she was fired from the VIP ward but was the E.R. surgeon all the time now. Yoo Ji bid them goodbyes and went back to the news station to start digging with the newfound information, no matter how little.
As she was on the bus, she remembered to call Gwang Nam back. It should be a night at Urk.
“Hello?” his voice came through.
“Sorry I couldn't respond I was at the police station” Yoo Ji looked down and picked at her backpacks loose strings.
“So I was right.” he chuckled.
“I found something but it's just a start, I have so much work” Yoo Ji groaned. She barely got back and she was already starting to feel exhausted, her body had barely any time to recover from all the physical strain it had been in Urk and now she had to follow leads that will lead to more dead ends then the actual killer.
“You’ll be fine.” Gwang Nam assured her.
Two days later
Yoo Ji had checked her phone at least 6 times at this point. Gwang Nam is supposed to text her that they arrived soon and she was itching to get off work and go to him. She missed him a lot. She was fidgety. If Hwa Dong and Rae Wook noticed, they didn't say anything, but Yoo Ji knew that Rae Wook would crack and ask. She was driving him insane.
“Stop. moving.” he gritted his teeth, glaring at her.
“Sorry” she apologized.
“Are you waiting for exam results? Why are you so anxious?” Hwa Dong set down the papers that they were looking at. Rae Wook was able to access some records of the relatives and they were reviewing their information such as their jobs and their relationship with the victim.
“I am waiting for a phone call” Yoo Ji responded, not telling them the vital information that they seek.
“From who?” Rae Wook asked, raising a questioning eyebrow at Yoo Ji’s mysteriousness.
“Uh- a friend I made when I was on my assignment” Yoo Ji’s eyes checked her phone again.
“Boyfriend” Rae Wook and Hwa Dong smirked as they agreed.
“What? No! It's nothing like that” Yoo Ji denied.
“Hye Jin told us you met a soldier and that you’re waiting for his call”
“Why ask if you already knew” Yoo Ji rolled her eyes, she picked up her phone from her desk and pocketed it.
“Are you not gonna tell us anything?” Hwa Dong asked.
“There’s not much to tell, he's a First Sergeant, he comes back today from being deployed at Urk” Yoo Ji waved off.
“When do we get to meet him?” Hwa Dong kept the conversation going, Rae Wook had picked up the forgotten papers and got back to reading while listening to Yoo Ji’s answers.
A small ping from Yoo Ji’s phone made her start grinning as she fished it out of her pocket and read the message. Gwang Nam had just finished meeting with his superior and could meet up.
“You can meet him if you give me a ride” Yoo Ji grinned as she offered. Hwa Dong nodded and tapped Rae Wook so that he can wrap up and they can leave.
“We’ll see if he’s worth it” Rae Wook muttered under his breath, he was walking behind Yoo Ji, she heard him and drew her elbow back and aimed a jab at his stomach. Yoo Ji got another text message with where they were supposed to meet.
“He is, he saved me on multiple occasions, not that I needed to be saved. But the thought counts” Yoo Ji replied to his skeptical comment. They all got into Hwa Dong’s car.
Yoo Ji was excited, it's only been a few days, but the new environment of their home feels more mysterious than the war-torn country they were in. Yoo Ji thought they could have more normal dates here, instead of minefield dates, although they sound cooler, Yoo Ji did like the idea of normalcy, just something about everyday life that makes her feel giddy.
“Aw, look at Firefly all excited to meet with her boyfriend” Rae Wook teased looking back at her in the back of the car as he sat in the passenger seat. Yoo Ji rolled her eyes, she focused on the scenery passing by. She wondered how he would react to her friends. She quickly texted him that she was getting a ride from her friends and he’ll meet them today. Gwang Nam responded that he doesn’t mind.
They arrived at the coffee shop, Yoo Ji jumped out of the car, she was swinging slightly on the balls of her feet. Rae Wook and Hwa Dong looked at her with chuckles and amusement in their eyes.
They walked in and Yoo Ji’s eyes swept around to spot Gwang Nam. Instead, Gwang Nam noticed her first and waved her over. Yoo Ji was taken back, she hasn't seen him in casual clothing in so long. He was wearing white shirt and black slacks. As they neared his table, she noticed a black blazer that matched his pants. He looked good, glowing even in the winter air. She felt herself slip into comfortableness as she subconsciously remembered how at ease he makes her. She didn't need to be on guard all the time when she was with him, she trusted him. It had little to do with actual protection even though she knows he can probably physically protect her, but also in every way emotionally.
Rae Wook and Hwa Dong were observing Yoo Ji closely, she watched as her demeanor went excited to relax, just at the sight of the man. They gave each other glances, and they came to an understanding that this man really had Yoo Ji’s complete or most of her trust, so he must be trustworthy.
“Let me introduce you guys, Gwang Nam meet Detectives Kang Rae Wook and Lee Hwa Dong,” Yoo Ji started as soon as they got settled at the table, “Rae Wook and Hwa Dong meet First Sergeant Lim Gwang Nam.”
The men shook hands and smiled politely, Yoo Ji scrunched her nose at the formality of the air, she’s seen both men be comfortable, the awkwardness is really unnecessary, in her opinion.
“How was your flight back?”
“It was fine, the turbulence wasn't bad” Gwang Nam assured her.
“Did you just come back?” Rae Wook asked, Gwang Nam nodded.
“Yoo Ji’s flight was two days earlier than mine, I had to leave with my team,” he explained. The two cops nodded.
“What do you specialize in?” Hwa Dong questioned curiously. Yoo Ji remained quiet but silently rolled her eyes, they were questioning him like he was in an interrogation.
“Sniping and hand to hand”
“How many confirmed kills?” Rae Wook fired his next question.
“that's confidential information.” Yoo Ji cut in, she raised an eyebrow at Rae Wook.
“This sounds like an interrogation, not a friendly get together. Stop,” Yoo Ji firmly ended the questioning.
“Alright, I apologize for my coworker’s behavior, we just care a lot about our friend” Hwa Dong relented first under Yoo Ji’s gaze.
“It’s alright, it’s good that Yoo Ji has friends that care about her,” Gwang Nam smiled.
“Well that's a first, usually we don't hear Yoo Ji’s boyfriends very happy that she's friends with two male cops” Rae Wook snorted, Yoo Ji mentally facepalmed. She should’ve taken just Hwa Dong, he doesn't cause as much trouble as Rae Wook.
“Ah well, it comforts me that there are people around her that can protect her,” he paused before adding, “if she can't do it herself, of course.” he grinned as he looked at Yoo Ji’s deadpanning face. The two cops chuckled at the couple.
“We see that you care about her very much,” Hwa Dong approved, smiling.
“How was Urk? Did she cause trouble? I heard that she fucked shit up at least three times” Rae Wook smirked as Yoo Ji sighed and groaned.
“It was good, she just kept on pulling out cards with ‘I do what I want’ on them and got kidnapped and escaped by herself” Gwang Nam chuckled as he revealed their adventures.
“Damn Firefly, you can't even let him play knight in shining armor for at least one night” Rae Woook teased Yoo Ji.
“I don't need saving, I handled it by myself just fine” Yoo Ji huffed.
“Oh I remember, you had the guy at gunpoint” Gwang Nam stated.
“You let her use a gun?” Hwa Dong demanded.
“We taught her how to use a gun, remember? Why are you so surprised? Wait until she uses it on a civilian and then be shocked” Rae Wook deadpanned.
“Hopefully that day won’t come” Gwang Nam responded, chuckling, Yoo Ji had her face in her hands in humiliation.
“Okay, we actually have to go do more research on the ongoing Armadillo case, but it was nice meeting you” Hwa Dong said as he checked his watch. Rae Wook nodded and both of them left the table. Yoo Ji excused herself to talk to them separately.
“Are you guys hiding something from me? I didn't know we had more information to look for?” she queried.
“We scheduled an interview with the person that found the body, just some routine stuff you can skip. We’ll tell you if we find anything” Hwa Dong assured her as he gave her a side hug and Rae Wook saluted her with a smirk.
Yoo Ji returned to her seat.
“They didn't tell me they were interviewing someone,” Yoo Ji explained to Gwang Nam when she came back. Gwang Nam nodded and sipped his drink.
“So what do you plan to do now that you’re back?” Yoo Ji asked. She didn't know what he normally did when he was his civilian self, she couldn't assume he would do routine checks on their weapons even in Korea.
“Well I am on vacation for three days, I haven't decided yet.” he responded, looking deep in thought.
“What about Shi Jin and Dae Young?” Yoo Ji continued, she stole his drink and sipped the iced coffee. Gwang Nam chuckled.
“They are embarking on their ‘No Nights and Three Days’ adventure”
“What is that?” Yoo Ji furrowed her eyebrows.
“They drink for three days and don't sleep or go home,” he explained. Yoo Ji’s eyes widened.
“That sounds fun,” Yoo Ji laughed.
“Will you be joining them?”
“Will you?”
“I don't know, I haven't decided yet. It depends on whether we’re going to do anything together.”
“Do you have any ideas on what you want to do?” Yoo Ji commented when she found Gwang Nam looking at her with a glint.
“Let’s go airsofting”
“You're not sick of shooting guns all the time?” Yoo Ji asked incredulously.
“It’s my job and hobby” Gwang Nam shrugged, “besides I never got to see how good you were, I always came at the end” he chuckled.
“Don't cry when I beat your ass,” Yoo Ji smirked.
It was the day after Yoo Ji and Gwang Nam’s small date. Yoo Ji was going to go investigate the family members. The two cops and Yoo Ji decided that the assailant was probably someone the victim knew seeing as there weren't any defensive wounds.
The victim’s parents own a barbecue place, and that's where Yoo Ji was heading. She wanted to observe them before she actually asked them any questions. Yoo Ji found that watching them in their natural habitat can tell you a lot about them, she can find out if they are financially stable, if they handle stress well, how they respond to rude customers. It all tells something about their character as a family.
She sat in the back of the restaurant and ordered like a normal customer, she spent hours watching the mother; Choi Jun Bae and the father; Lee Don Hee. they were in their late 60s. They served customers and made their orders. It was a very busy day, they were running around and didn't even have time to make eye contact. Yoo Ji huffed, this proved to be useless, It doesn't always yield results. She paid for her food and left.
As she was leaving she got a text message from Myung Ju to come to a certain food joint. Yoo Ji furrowed her eyebrows until the realization dawned on her, the ‘no night and three days’ the boys were doing. She quickly texted back that she’s on her way and got off the bus to take another that's going in the right direction. Yoo Ji mentally scowled, she should really invest in a car. She knows how to drive one but she doesn't own one.
As soon as she arrived she peeked in, she saw Mo Yeon’s back standing in front of a table where Myung Ju was sitting in her uniform sipping soup. She went inside with a smile, but her smile faded as she saw the boys completely wasted. Cheol Ho was resting his head against the back of his seat, Woo Geun was sleeping on Cheol Ho’s lap, and Gwang Nam was wearing a pink sweater passed out completely, head on the table. Yoo Ji raised an eyebrow with amusement
“Y’all didn't wait for me?” Yoo Ji’s disappointed tone made Shi Jin and Dae Young lull their heads towards her voice. Myung Ju and Mo Yeon looked at her with opposite expressions, Myung Ju was calm, unfazed, while Mo Yeon looked shocked and in disbelief.
“What is this mess? When did these men get here?” Mo Yeon asked.
“Why did you get here so late?” Myung Ju asked Mo Yeon, chewing on the food.
“It's because the night shift barely ended just now.” Mo Yeon replied.
“How did you get here so fast?” Myung Ju addressed Yoo Ji who was standing next to Mo Yeon.
“I was close,” Yoo Ji responded, her eyes never leaving Gwang Nam’s figure. Yoo Ji rounded the table and sat in front of Gwang Nam directly.
“Are these men usually like this?” Mo Yeon questioned, she pointed at the boys like they were aliens, which at this point they were probably drunk enough to think they were aliens.
“Why does our reunion have to look like this?” she paused, her eyes squinting with mild annoyance, “I was going to make a welcome placard with hearts drawn on it and go to the airport.”
“I bought some clothes, and I even put a facial mask on my face.”
“The kimchi stew here is really good.” Myung Ju nodded at Mo Yeon’s rant.
“Why don't you have a bowl?” Myung Ju offered the two girls, Yoo Ji reached over and poured some in an empty bowl.
“Where are you going?” Mo Yeon stopped Myung Ju as she moved to leave.
“I am going back to the unit. I am not on a break.” Myung Ju replied. Yoo Ji watched them as they conversed, she took small sips of the stew, her eyes fleeing to Gwang Nam’s passed out figure every few seconds.
“Why are you leaving by yourself? You should take Sergeant First Class Seo with you.” Mo Yeon stated. Yoo Ji rolled her eyes and softly snorted, ‘yeah, like that will happen’ she thought.
Yoo Ji watched as Shi Jin grabbed the ladle and scooped some of the stew and fed Dae Young as he saluted. Yoo Ji grinned at the hilarious sight.
“It's no nights and 3 days, so I can't take him with me.” Myung Ju told Mo Yeon.
“No nights and how many days now? They must be crazy!” Mo Yeon exclaimed, turning to look at the men and Yoo Ji who started to pour alcohol into her glass.
“The girl that just came in is so pretty.” Shi Jin whispered drunkenly to Dae Young.
“You’ve got to be kidding me?” Mo Yeon moaned as she watched Shi Jin but her exclamation was towards Yoo Ji.
“What? It's free alcohol” Yoo Ji shrugged and drank her shot.
“The girl that just left is way prettier.” Dae Young glanced at Mo Yeon with half-lidded eyes.
“No way! This woman is so much prettier, you know.” Shi Jin refuted. The two drunk men kept their conversation going but Mo Yeon focused on Yoo Ji was behind them
“How did you even know about this?” Mo Yeon asked Yoo Ji.
“Gwang Nam told me yesterday.”
“Don't you have a job?” Mo Yeon scrutinized. Yoo Ji scrunched her nose and gulped a shot.
“I hit a dead end,” she scowled.
“So you’re going to be drinking the rest of the day?” Mo Yeon sarcastically commented.
“Yes, it’s time to celebrate their return” Yoo Ji responded with a chuckle, “I am kidding, I am not going to do that. I have to meet with the detectives to look at the evidence.”
The next day, she got a text message from Gwang Nam telling her that he had gone home the night before, hammered, and needed the morning to recover. So their coffee date was postponed to the afternoon. That was fine with Yoo Ji, she still had a lot of groundwork to do. She had to follow the victim’s sister, Lee Eun Yong, who worked part-time at her parent’s food joint and in a nursing home.
Rae Wook told Yoo Ji that it was useless to follow her when Rae Wook and Hwa Dong had interviewed her; she was crossed off the list because she was too timid and also had an alibi. Yoo Ji insisted that she might lead them to the killer. She works for a nursing home, she must have relations with a nearby coroner in case someone from the elderly dies. That would be her next possible lead, even if Lee Eun Yong wasn’t directly involved with the murder.
Yoo Ji recorded Lee Eun Yong’s movements and how she carried herself. Yoo Ji noticed the slight tremor in the girl’s right hand. Yoo Ji doesn’t recall reading about any illnesses in her file, but not surprising. People go years before they go to a doctor if they have a slight tremor or something wrong with them, especially if they are financially struggling.
Yoo Ji snapped out of her trance staring at empty space now that Lee Eun Yong had disappeared from her when she felt her phone buzz. It was a call from Hye Jin telling her to go back to the station because the boss wanted to talk to her.
“I am assigning you to cover the political dinner between the South Korean and the North Korea Presidents” he stated, not even looking up to make eye contact with her as soon as she opened the door.
“But I am following the Armadillo case that you assigned me” Yoo Ji protested, the case was going very slow, she didn't have any solid leads yet.
“Put it on hold, I want you to cover this. Don't mess it up” he waved his hand, dismissing Yoo Ji’s protest. Yoo Ji took that as her cue to leave. She walked back to her desk and scowled. There are too many leads and too many loose ends. She had to get to the bottom of this case.
Yoo Ji sighed, she’ll have to do what her boss assigned her to do. She started to pull up all the articles detailing the visit and when it will go down. She still had a week until she had to cover it. She knows that the South Korean President will be visiting North Korea tomorrow. Yoo Ji sighed and rested her head against her desk.
“What happened? You sighed like 5 times” Jung Hye Jin asked.
“He assigned me the political dinners on top of the Armadillo Case” she mumbled.
“Wow! He really hates you right now” Hye Jin cringed, “you shouldn't have written that article last year, you wouldn't be in this position” he added.
“It's not my problem one of the shareholders decided to kill their children” Yoo Ji refuted.
“You didn't have to write the article” Hye Jin reminded her, Yoo Ji picked up her head from her desk and narrowed her eyes at the man.
“What happened to freedom of the press? It's not like I slandered them. I wrote what happened” she snapped back.
“And look what happened to you, you got sent to a foreign country for 9 months and then assigned an Armadillo case plus a political dinner that's impossible to get into if you're not well known.” Hye Jin listed.
“I am pretty sure the shareholder’s life in prison is easier than yours right now” he added.
“I know” Yoo Ji whined, slumping back into her chair. Hye Jin looked at her with a pitying smile.
“It's fine, I can do this” Yoo Ji shook her head and said out loud, trying to convince herself. Yoo Ji gathered her stuff and went to the coffee shop she planned to meet Gwang Nam in.
She arrived earlier than Gwang Nam this time, she settled inside the coffee shop and ordered. She sighed as she waited for him to come. She was scrolling through her phone when she heard him pull out the chair that was on the opposite side of her.
“Hey, how was work today?” Gwang Nam’s voice asked. He set his drink down next to hers
“It was fine, I got assigned another article but I can manage”
“What’s it on?”
“Some political dinners.” Yoo Ji waved off, she wasn't interested in that topic.
“The case I am investigating is getting weirder”
“How come?”
“There’s no strong lead suspects and the family looks like it just moved on, like nothing happened” Yoo Ji stared off to the side, pondering what was the deal with the Lee family.
“I am sure you’ll figure it out,” Gwang Nam assured. He smiled at her, she could tell that he was hungover but only because his eyes were still rimmed with red.
“How was the night with the boys?” Yoo Ji asked. Gwang Nam looked confused.
“You came?”
“Yeah the kimchi stew was good” Yoo Ji smirked at Gwang Nam’s confusion.
“Wait, you actually came? Where was I?”
“Passed out on the table” Yoo Ji responded with a grin. Gwang Nam was about to say something when his phone interrupted him.
“Hello,” “yes, sir” “power of unity” Gwang Nam hung up and looked at Yoo Ji as she stared at him with curiosity.
“I have to go” he stated, his face calm but his eyes churned with worry. Yoo Ji wasn't sure what he was worried about.
“Work?” Yoo Ji sipped her drink. Gwang Nam nodded.
“I am sorry” he apologized. Yoo Ji shook her head, waving him off. He can't apologize for his job.
“I’ll text you when I am done. Okay? We still have to go airsofting” Gwang Na promised as he gathered his coat and drink and moved to leave. Yoo Ji nodded and told him to be safe, as he left. She sighed. This didn't last very long. She went back to the police station to work some more.
“Following her wasn't a total waste of time.” Yoo Ji stated as soon as she reached Rae Wook’s desk. He turned towards her and raised an eyebrow.
“She works at a nursing home,” Yoo Ji said with glee.
“So?”
“So? So she probably knows a coroner” Yoo Ji said with a matter of fact voice.
“How in the world did you come to this conclusion?”
“You said that the M.E. said that the body of the victim looked ‘polished’” Yoo Ji rolled her eyes, Rae Wook was too slow.
“Okay and?” Hwa Dong added as he walked to his own desk with a steaming cup of coffee.
“Come on guys! She works at a nursing home, where the elderly will soon die and will need to be buried” Yoo Ji elaborated, waiting for them to catch onto her train of thought. They didn't.
“She knows the coroner, it’s her cousin. Shin Young Won” Yoo Ji handed Rae Wook the coroner’s file.
“How do you do that?” Hwa Dong asked in amazement.
“Don't praise her just yet, this might lead to nowhere” Rae Wook reprimanded, Yoo Ji’s grin faded into a sarcastic glare towards Rae Wook.
“At least, I got us somewhere.”
-Shi Jin went to visit Mo Yeon at the hospital and meets the Chairman then they went to meet Dae Young and Myung Ju in the cafe-
A few days had passed and Yoo Ji was getting ready to sneak into the hotel where they were going to have the political dinner. Okay, that's a lie, she can't sneak in even if she wanted to, the security was going to be airtight and she would not be able to get in, so she used her second best thing, her connections. She called one of the major reporters in the area who she knew would definitely have a place in the press conference. He owed her a favor for helping him cover a story a few years ago. At this point, she can barely remember what he needed help with mostly because so many people owe her favors. It's the nature of her job, connections are everything.
Gwang Nam had come back from his mission and they were able to set a time to go airsofting. They didn't talk about work, well they tried not to on the way.
“How’s the case going?”
“Rae Wook and Hwa Dong are tailing the victim’s family, nothing yet though” Yoo Ji responded.
“I am not as involved as I want to be since I was assigned to another issue too.” Yoo Ji huffed in slight annoyance, tailing is her favorite part of an investigation, but she couldn't participate because she had to get her information and questions ready for the press conference/dinner.
“Are you ready to be obliterated?” Yoo Ji challenged Gwang Nam with a smirk.
“Are you ready to face failure?” Gwang Nam retorted back, as they put on their gears and chose their weapons.
As soon as they were ready and they were given the okay sign to go inside the arena, they both went opposite ways. Yoo Ji wasted no time trying to find a good hiding spot just in case things go south.
Gwang Nam waited with bated breath to hear the sound of the alarm going off to start the official game. The alarm blared throughout the dark arena. Gwang Nam waited and listened to footsteps or any movement. Since they both had goggles, his vision was a little obscured but still better than normal people, since he’s used to them. He has no idea if Yoo Ji is as accustomed to it, so he’ll have to be extra cautious because that counts as a weakness.
Yoo Ji had her gun pointed in front of her, and focused her senses, she zeroed in on hearing since the goggles weren’t allowing her to see much from her peripheral vision. She pivoted on her feet, trying to cover all her sides, it wasn't dark, but it was indoor, so some places had more light than others. She heard a shot near her and she booked it behind drywall. They were the only ones in the arena, they were able to book it for just them two because it's a smaller arena.
She peeked from behind the wall and aimed her gun towards the general direction of where the shot came from. She used the sniper scope on her rifle and looked for Gwang Nam. she spotted movement, she quickly shot at it and hid behind the drywall acting as a shield. For a few seconds she heard nothing and she waited, holding her breath.
The rule of this game is to see how many times they can kill each other. They don't die infinitely, it will take 12 seconds to come back ‘to life’. The timer is attached to the tactical vest, it blocks the guns from shooting at that time through transmitters on the weapons and the vest. Yoo Ji peaked and started moving, she wasn't going to sit in one place for too long.
As they played they stayed on the tip of their toes, no one really gaining an upper hand. As the game progressed, they were getting more competitive and harder to locate. Gwang Nam would get a good shot but she would reciprocate with a shot of her own a minute later. As Gwang Nam reloaded his gun, he thought that she would be a great partner, the only reason he wouldn't entertain that thought longer is that Yoo Ji had already spotted his hiding spot and he had to roll away from her rain of fire.
Yoo Ji kept her guard up the whole 30 minutes that they played. At some point, she forgot how many kills she has, and just focused on shooting the target. He was good, and he had to be. But Yoo Ji was growing frustrated and more competitive than ever.
Yoo Ji hid behind a tall hollow structure, there were cutouts, to mimic windows, she caught his figure darting between two structures. She pivoted to follow his movement and aimed to shoot him as he continued to run between the pillars. Yoo Ji cocked her gun to get a better grip, but after a few seconds he didn't come out. She lowered her arms and started to creep closer. As she turned to corner him with her gun at his chest. She looked up with a smirk, but it slowly faded as she noticed that he had his helmet and goggles off.
“I have to leave,” Gwang Nam stated, keeping eye contact with Yoo Ji.
“Where are you going?” Yoo Ji asked confused, she thought he was off duty for at least two more days.
“I have to go shoot real guns now” Gwang Nam tried to joke, to lighten the mood. Yoo Ji smiled back, she understood, his job was unplanned and had no personal boundaries and that’s okay. She gets that, she has the same drawbacks in her own profession.
“Okay, let’s go, but for the record,” Yoo Ji dismissed feigning leaving, but quickly shot him in the chest, she smirked when he yelped in surprise.
“I win.”
“Oh no, you did not! That was cheating!” Gwang Nam whined, stomping his feet stubbornly. Yoo Ji shook her head, acting like she didn't hear him, she skipped to the exit and started to take off the gear. She stopped midway when she felt his arms wrap around her from the back.
“I am going to get back at you for this later” he murmured in her ear as he buried his head into her shoulders.
“We’ll see about that, Piccolo” Yoo Ji teased.
After they were done giving back the gear and getting their belongings, Gwang Nam dropped Yoo Ji at the police station and went to the base.
Yoo Ji sighed and headed up, she was tired from the game that they played, but there was still time for her to look over some documents. She was hoping Hwa Dong or Rae Wook was still in the office. As soon as she reached their desks, she plopped into an extra chair, and grabbed one of the documents, and flipped through it.
“Jesus Christ, you scared me, why are you here?” Hwa Dong put his hand over his chest. He was caught off guard at Yoo Ji’s figure lounging on his chair. He had gone to make some noodles as a late-night snack as he finished paperwork of a previous case he had finished.
“Something doesn't make sense” Yoo Ji shook her head.
“Shouldn't you be with your boyfriend right now?” Hwa Dong ignored Yoo Ji, he knew that she was just thinking out loud, mostly because multiple times before he had tried to contribute to her thought process but she would cut him off, her brain working too fast or not at all, there's no in-between.
“He had to leave, his job called. How does the coroner make a profit?” Yoo Ji answered offhandedly.
“He makes a profit off the deceased” Hwa Dong answered obviously.
“No, not what I meant” Yoo Ji She waved her hand dismissing his answer.
“When I went around the nursing home, I asked who does the burials and funerals, and they said that Eun Yong has a cousin that does it at no cost for the elderly that have no families.” Yoo Ji recounted from her memory.
“So how does a coroner make a profit when he doesn’t charge from his major source of work?” Yoo Ji pondered out loud.
Hwa Dong dug in the big pile of papers on both his desk and Rae Wook’s, coming up with the background information on the cousin, Shin Young Won. his bank statement, his criminal records, general information like that.
Yoo Ji focused on his bank statements, he doesn't seem to be financially struggling as his cousins.
“He’s been getting big amounts of money from another account,” Hwa Dong analyzed.
“I’ll try to see if we can trace it to the original sender,” he told Yoo Ji as he inputted some kind of data into the computer. Hwa Dong is a detective but he also was very tech-savvy, he knew his way around a laptop and can extract any information he wants. He majored in computer coding when he attended college, but that’s all Yoo Ji knows about his history of messing with computers.
“The money was transferred from an offshore account, but the original sender was from here, Korea,” Hwa Dong paused, letting the data load.
“It looks like its insurance companies” Hwa Doong furrowed his eyebrows, that doesn't make sense, why would insurance companies be sending money to a person whom none of his family members died until recently.
“Insurance fraud?” Yoo Ji and Hwa Dong said simultaneously.

No Damsel In Distress In Sight
Episode 12:
Dae Young went to visit Myung Ju one last time before he went to help Shi Jin in rescuing Doctor Kang and Yoo Ji. He informed her of the situation.
“ We lost complete contact with Captain Yoo, and Doctor Kang Mo Yeon is assumed to be kidnapped along with Mun Yoo Ji who had gone after Mo Yeon ”
“ Shi Jin seems to be on a one-man operation ” he continued, he put his dog tags in Myung Ju’s hands and told her to take care of them while he’s gone.
“ Starting now, we'll begin an unauthorized black ops mission. We expect an armed clash with armed gang members, and there is no backup other than us. ” Dae Young paused, looking at the three men before him.
“This is an out-of-uniform mission, and we may not come back alive. If you don't want to take part, you are excused.” Dae Young informed them, they all looked stoic, Gwang Nam had an anxious look, he didn't know what to do, Yoo Ji was kidnapped by Agus because she tailed them. He wanted to hug her as well as yell at her.
“ Any questions? ” he asked
“ No, sir ” they responded. Dae Young nodded and told them to gear up.

Yoo Ji had cut all of the ropes, she tried the door and found it open, she scrunched her face, ‘are they stupid?’ she shook her head.
She checked the shadows underneath the door and saw no shadows passing by. She cracked the door open just a little and peeked outside, it was empty. Seriously, they were doing a horrible job at keeping hostages. She looked up and saw that there were security cameras. She glanced at one of the windows, it was night time already. She quickly found their blind spots and stayed within them. She went down the long hallway and looked at the room with all the children, she found just like she left them, she gave them a thumbs up and a small smile. She continued down until she heard the sound of Agus’s laughter. She snuck closer and heard what he was saying clearer.
“ Bye-bye, we’re in the money- right now ” he sang, she had no idea what he meant, but it was probably his latest deal or something. Yoo Ji rolled her eyes. She analyzed the situation again, any moment the guy watching the cameras will spot her, but she only has a pocket knife. But if she bursts in through the door, she would be taken down very quickly. But if she gets caught outside she maybe can get a gun and won't be so vulnerable once she barges in on Agus’s one-sided conversation.
As soon as she finished thinking she spotted a man making a turn into the hallway. She swiftly used his thigh as a step ladder and she hoisted herself onto his shoulders before choking him with her thighs. Black widow style, his body dropped and she grabbed his gun and checked the clip, it was a colt 25. She had five bullets in the small gun. It was designed to fit on the body and be concealed. She shrugged, she doesn't think she’ll have to use it but it's good to be safe. She dragged the unconscious man to a room and locked it from the outside. She burst into the room Agus and Mo Yeon were in.
“Drop your gun!” Yoo Ji yelled at Agus. he whirled around but didn't put his hands up. Yoo Ji miscalculated, he wasn’t alone he was with the fake U.N. guy and two more guys with rifles. Yoo Ji pointed her gun at Agus and then fake U.N. guy, they didn't look armed but the guys with the rifles were ready to shoot.
“Tsk tsk, Mun Yoo Ji, you keep on making mistakes.” Agus snickered.
“If you’re a man fight me, no guns or knives.” Yoo Ji spat. She didn't even have time to check if Mo Yeon was inside the room, she had Agus right here and she can take him out.
“Now, why would I do that?” Agus looked at her with ease.
“If I die, it won't matter, Captain Yoo will end you, but if you die, I get to keep the money” she smirked. Agus raised an eyebrow.
“I doubt it. But I want to be entertained while Big Boss arrives. Gabe, you fight her” Agus grinned at the fake U.N. guy, Agus waved at the other two guys and told them to lower their guns. Yoo Ji dropped the gun and slid it behind her. Gabe smirked and lunged at her, she ducked and elbowed him in the back, she spun around and ducked again, she punched Gabe in his stomach. He keeled over and clutched his stomach. She kneed his head while he was lowered onto the floor.
Gabe was able to grab onto her waist and flipped them around, she was under him and was shielding her face from his punches. She finally caught a glimpse of Mo Yeon, but she looked horrified. She smiled and grabbed onto Gabe’s right arm and pulled it down the opposite way, stopping his movement momentarily. Yoo Ji then used her other hand to push her body off the ground, knocking Gabe off her.
“Come on Gabe, I am sure you can do better than that” Yoo Ji taunted, her eyes flickering to Agus’s desk, he had moved the money into a case and he lounged on his chair as he watched the fight and his watch, occasionally.
Gabe ran towards her and grabbed the back of her head and kneed her so hard, she punched his stomach to let her go. Yoo Ji was becoming light-headed, but she shook it off and she had to win. She took a deep breath and released it. Gabe tried to punch her face but she ducked and hit his diaphragm, knocking the breath out of him, he should be in pain for a while. She tackled him and started punching him just as he did a few minutes ago, he covered his face to protect it, she heard Agus speak.
“ Times up, we’ll see if your boyfriend kept his promise , Gabe, wrap it up” Agus instructed him, in that split second Yoo Ji acted fast, she reached behind her and grabbed a gun and tucked it into her pants, thanking the lord that it was a smaller gun than normal. Gabe grabbed her and forced her hands behind her back. She smirked, but then ended up wincing instead, Gabe had gotten a few punches on her face, her lip was busted but not bleeding.
“I let you have your fun, but now it’s time for me to leave.” Agus addressed Yoo Ji, he turned to Mo Yeon who was still tied up.
“Your boyfriend better do as he was told or you both won't live to see tomorrow” he grinned sadistically.
“You go to the backroom, we’ll use the reporter as a back up if the Captain decides to be a little bitch,” Agus told one of the men standing guard, who pushed Yoo Ji towards a door she didn't notice when she busted in, it was behind the safe. She glanced back and saw Agus’s men untying Mo Yeon and holding tightly onto her.
“Let’s get you dressed up” Yoo Ji heard Agus faintly say as the door shut behind them.
_____________________________________________________________________
Shi Jin stood alone in front of Agus and his men, he looked behind them and found only Mo Yeon, she had a bleeding lip and a bomb vest. Shi Jin was enraged, he raised his gun at Agus.
“ Did you hit her? ” he gritted out in English, “ All snipers on standby. ” Shi Jin said switching to Korean so that Agus doesn't understand.
“I don't see Mun Yoo Ji, I think they still have her hostage” Shi Jin communicated. There was shuffling in his earpiece.
“Piccolo transmitting, I’ll go find Firefly, Harry Potter will take care of the children” Gwang Nam responded.
Gwang Nam left his post and started trying rooms; they were empty until he found one that seemed to be the room that Agus was staying in. He checked out the rooms until he found a door behind the safe. He opened it and found a short narrow hallway with one door at the end. He readied his gun before busting the door open.
Once he looked inside he found Yoo Ji pointing a gun at the man that seemed to be with her. She didn't glance behind her.
“If you move I won't hesitate to shoot, where is Agus planning to escape to?” Yoo Ji asked with a menacing tone. Gwang Nam has never seen her use this tone. He had his gun aimed at the man too as he came and stood beside Yoo Ji.
“Piccolo transmitting, I found Firefly, she didn't seem to need much help, she had the guard at gunpoint” Gwang Nam relayed to his team, with a smirk. Gwang Nam heard a chuckle from the other end of the comm.
“Where is Agus going?” Yoo Ji gritted her teeth, glaring at the man.
“Never” the man growled out before grabbing his pocket knife and sticking it into his gut. Yoo Ji sighed and dropped her hand to her side.
“Took you long enough,” Yoo Ji said to Gwang Nam as they made their way back the short hallway and into the room.
“Big Boss and Snoopy are with Doctor Kang who has a bomb vest on, Wolf is at sniper position and Harry Potter is escorting the children.” Gwang Nam responded. Yoo Ji ‘s eyes widened, so that's what Agus meant.
“Oh good, you found the children, I untied them for you” Yoo Ji retorted with an uneasy smile.
“That explains the tied and unconscious guard in the back of the room” Gwang Nam replied. His eyes focusing in front of him with his gun raised in case he needs to shoot. They were able to arrive at a hallway that was adjacent to the main one that Agus and Captain Yoo were in. Gwang Nam signaled Yoo Ji to be quiet and found them to be behind Agus. The Alpha team had Agus’s men surrounded.
“ Look on her left shoulder. The faint green light on the shoulder to the right. I am sure. ” Snoopy’s voice echoed as it played in Gwang Nam’s earpiece and in the scene before them.
Yoo Ji checked the clip from her gun, she still had 5 bullets, she could put them to use.
“ What are you doing? ” Agus asked when Shi Jin aimed at Mo Yeon. Yoo Ji rolled her shoulder, she winced. She focused on Shi Jin.
“ Take aim, ” Shi Jin said to Dae Young. Gwang Nam refocused the gun. Shi Jin shot the transmitter on Mo Yeon’s shoulder, it kickstarted the chaos and bullets. Mo Yeon ducked to the floor and started crawling towards Shi Jin. Yoo Ji took aim at the men and shot them down. While Gwang Nam did the same.
“Get behind me!” he shouted, he was way more heavily armed than she is. She ducked behind him after she ran out of bullets. Once Agus and his men were down they crossed the hallway to stand by Snoopy and Captain Yoo.
Agus seemed to be injured but not dead as he grabbed his fallen gun, Shi Jin didn't give him a moment more before shooting the chandelier and letting it fall and catch on fire. It didn't burn for long but it did hinder him.
Yoo Ji came and knelt by Mo Yeon and Snoopy as he tried to disable the bomb. Captain Yoo was next to Mo Yeon to help comfort the shaking doctor. They had destroyed the transmitter from the vest to Agus remote but they didn't stop the bomb itself. Gwang Nam stood guard as they talked.
“ How much time is left? ” Shi Jin asked Woo Geun.
“ I only need a minute. I can disarm it in one minute. ” Snoopy responded. Woo Geun held onto the wires, Yoo Jii glimpsed at the wires, he needed to cut the red and black.
“ Just don’t move, ” Woo Geun instructed the shaking Doctor.
“ It's not that I am moving ” Mo Yeon looked up, tears started making their way down her face as her hands shook more. Shi Jin tried to distract her. Yoo Ji sighed and looked at Woo Geun.
“ It only has 30 seconds, you should try to get somewhere far, hurry, ” Mo Yeon said shakingly.
“ There’s a lot we can do in 30 seconds ” Captain Yoo smiled reassuringly at her.
“The red and black right?” Yoo Ji murmured, Woo Geun looked at her with shock but he quickly got over it as he started cutting the wires
“ I am done, I will take it off of her. ” Woo Geun informed the Captain.
“ See? ” he smiled
“ I was able to successfully take off the vest but not disable the bomb, ” Woo Geun said with urgency, but he carefully peeled the vest of Mo Yeon.
“ Please take cover! ” Woo Geun yelled and threw the vest out the window. Gwang Nam grabbed Yoo Ji and shielded her with his body from the blast. Yoo Ji felt the heat from the outside, Gwang Nam was on top of her and his head was very close to hers, she could hear Wolf’s warning to Shi Jin. she lifted her head and saw that Agus had fired his gun at Shi Jin. Shi Jin shielded Mo Yeon with his body, but Yoo Ji couldn't see anything else. She looked around her for a gun but it didn’t seem like there were any on her side. Gwang Nam had his gun strapped to his back.
“Gwang Nam, quickly your gun” she groaned, he was still lying on top of her. Gwang Nam groaned and rolled over, he seemed to have been hit with the sediment of the bomb.
“Can you stand?” Yoo Ji asked him, her hand on his shoulder, the debris seemed to hit his back.
“I don't need to be able to stand, I need to be able to shoot” he responded aiming his gun at Agus, who was in between two windows. But his aim wasn’t focused.
“Okay, stop. It's not gonna do us any good if you get more hurt,” Yoo Ji eyes the gun in his hand. Maybe she’ll have more luck.
“Forget this” Yoo Ji turned to Shi Jin as he laid on the ground, his gun aimed at Agus. Shi Jin shot him in his chest, making him drop the case of money he had in his hand. Shi Jin didn't stop though, he emptied his magazine into Agus, who finally went down, for good.
Everything was eerily quiet as they started to leave the empty house, Mo Yeon was helped into the chopper and Shi Jin took the place of the pilot. The rest of the Alpha team sat in the back with Yoo Ji, who was relieved that this day is over.
Yoo Ji was going to sport a lot of bruises the next day, and her body was already starting to feel sore. But in hindsight, this is a much better option than being dead. As she settled down next to Gwang Nam, she felt him rest his arm around her shoulder.
“Okay, I am not trying to ruin the moment but where did you read how to disassemble a bomb?” Woo Geun asked Yoo Ji. Gwang Nam looked at her with surprise, he hadn't heard her talk to Woo Geun about the bomb. Dae Young raised a mere eyebrow at the reporter. He was truly impressed, she had held her own pretty well despite the situation.
“You’ve read about bomb disassembling?” Gwang Nam questioned, at this point he didn't know whether to be proud or scared that she knew this information. This feeling is starting to become very familiar whenever he finds out something new about Yoo Ji.
“And you think I can just bring it up from memory?” Yoo Ji sarcastically replied to both men.
“It's not like you can't,” Dae Young retorted, Yoo Ji huffed.
“I had to deal with bomb vests before, I thought it would be handy if I knew how to disable them before the expert arrives, you know...in case he’s late” she responded softly, recalling a horrible memory. All three men paused and looked at Yoo Ji, they realized that this reporter has gone through so much more than the usual investigation for a good story.
Once they arrived back on base, Dae Young left to go speak with Myung Ju and Shi Jin and Mo Yeon went on their own way. As they all settled back into their own bubbles Gwang Nam helped Yoo Ji onto a chair to assess the damage, she had to wrap her wounds, he had brought out a first aid kit with him.
“We still gotta talk about…” he let his sentence trail off, Yoo Ji nodded her head. He pressed his hand onto her forehead, she winced. He brought out bandages, she didn't even know where she was bleeding. She refused to look in case it tricked her mind and she couldn't keep fighting.
“I know, I am not mad anymore, it's just inconvenient. I don't like my past experiences to hinder my future that's all” Yoo Ji admitted. She had thought about why she was so mad at him for finding out, it was because she didn't want those experiences to define who she is, and how people act around her.
“It doesn't, I just wanted to know why you never sleep at night” Gwang Nam admitted. Yoo Ji looked at him with surprise.
“The last couple of weeks, you would wander around the base at night, I would be on night watch and I would see you” he continued, he let a smile slip and gazed into her eyes. He moved onto her arms, they were covered in cuts from rolling on the ground so much during fights.
“I never would’ve known that you went through such things if Doctor Kang didn't tell me. That’s reassurance that you didn't let those experiences hinder you from moving on” he tugged her closer and kissed her head. He moved to check her torso, she winced at his touch on her stomach. He slowly peeled away the layers of clothes and gauged at how bad the injury was. He started softly checking her abdomen, pushing in on certain parts of her stomach. Yoo Ji let him do it and didn't complain about the pain.
“How does it feel?” He examined her facial features in case she tries to cover up her emotions.
“Feels like I am getting stabbed” she responded truthfully, she could barely hold in how much it hurt.
“How do you know what it feels like to be stabb- Never mind don't answer that question” Gwang Nam couldn’t hold in his curiosity but decided that he didn't want to know, he was sure that the woman in front of him went through hell and back.
“It's good that you have such an understanding boyfriend,” he teased as he wrapped her wrist, she might’ve sprained it while fighting. She was still coming off the adrenaline rush so the pain in her wrist was just a dull ache that was slowly intensifying.
“Oh yes. Very caring and sensitive” Yoo Ji responded with as much teasing.
-Next Morning-
Yoo Ji woke up with distant voices of many men chanting. She groaned at first before remembering what that must mean. The ‘morning doves’ are back. She dragged her aching body towards the basin of water and where Nurses Choi and Ha were gathered. This time with an unlikely guest, Doctor Song.
“You’ve come to watch ‘Morning Doves’ too?” Yoo Ji grinned at the scolding doctor. He shook his head and pushed through the women. She caught a glimpse of Gwang Nam at the very back, winking at her discreetly.
“ Sergeant First Class Seo! ” Sang Hyun called out to the only fully dressed man jogging with the soldiers.
“ After watching and enduring it over and over, I am saying this as an intellectual that must take action. Why do you have to do those obscene things every day? It's so harmful, seriously! ” Sang Hyun whined as Dae Young took a moment before chuckling and clapping the doctor’s shoulder and jogging to catch up with the men.
Yoo Ji knew that the medical team would have a meeting after breakfast so she would have time to go into town and report on the last few pieces of information. She even had time to go over the information she got from the base so long ago.
It turns out the arms dealer that she was following for weeks was Agus all along, just under a different alias, with Agus dead they had no ring leader and she would be able to turn in the information and lead to their arrest. As soon as she finished writing the report and handed it in, she was handed a letter.
She waited until she got back on base to read it, she didn't really know what came after this. It was either follow another case or go home, she hoped it was the latter. She knows that within the next week, the soldiers should be returning to their homes. She ripped the envelope open to see an official statement by her company that she can go back the next week. She grinned and quickly got out of the car and ran to the common room. She didn't pay attention to the time or her pain. Mostly because she took painkillers before she left, but she was happy when she saw the medical team gathered.
“I officially got an order to go home next week!” she grinned, waving the letter in the air.
“ I'm not super excited about this. Am I the only one? ” Doctor Song said, shaking his head.
“ Me too, I feel weird ” Nurse Choi responded.
“Y’all are so weird, I can't wait to go home, I miss my bed” Yoo Ji sighed dreamily.
“ Well then, should we go do our last round in Urk? ” Mo Yeon asked the medical team, who all nodded.
“You guys go without me, I am going to go tell Captain Yoo that he doesn't have to deal with me anymore” Yoo Ji winked as she walked out of the room.
Yoo Ji would’ve skipped to the main room where Captain Yoo and Deputy Leader Seo have their meetings but she was still sore from the night before so she settled on walking at a slower pace. She eventually arrived and found the Alpha team all gathered.
“Reporter Mun Yoo Ji reporting to duty” she joked as she knocked on the door.
“Yoo Ji, how are you feeling? I heard that you were already escaping when First Sergeant Lim came to rescue you” Shi Jin greeted her, with a smile.
“Well you know I can handle myself just fine” Yoo Ji smiled back.
“No kidding, I’ve seen you fight, I guess I won't have to worry about you causing trouble and not being able to handle it anymore” Shi Jin started with a chuckle, Yoo Ji’s eyes widened and looked at Shi Jin with a look that clearly said drop it.
“What is he talking about? Did you fight someone that I am not aware of?” Gwang Nam queried, raising an eyebrow.
“You didn't tell him that you helped me fight the armed gang that had Fatima?” Shi Jin said with an obviously loud tone. Yoo Ji glared at the Captain. As she turned around she saw Dae Young, Woo Geun, and Cheol Ho holding their laughter.
“You what?”
“Look, it wasn’t a big deal, besides Captain Yoo didn't even let me fire the gun” Yoo Ji defended.
“That reminds me, how did you find a gun while you were being held hostage?” Woo Geun asked, recalling Gwang Nam’s statement on how he found Yoo Ji.
“They didn’t check my body for weapons, I didn't have just a gun but a pocket knife too,” Yoo Ji shrugged while taking out the pocket knife she had stolen the night before.
“Why do you think Gabe went down so fast? That asshole got a few punches in, I had to give him some kind of injury” Yoo Ji added making finger guns at them. Shi Jin looked at Gwang Nam with wide eyes.
“She actually shot them?”
“She did but thankfully she had only 5 bullets” Gwang Nam sighed, before turning to Yoo Ji.
“I am going to need you to stay within three feet of me at all times because I can't trust you won’t hurt someone or yourself” he sighed in fake defeat, as his eyes lowered he caught the letter in her hand.
“What’s that?” he pointed at the letter.
“Guess who gets to go home next week,” Yoo Ji smirked, waving the letter at them.
“You’re getting sent back too?” Gwang Nam said with disbelief. Yoo Ji nodded explaining how her last assignment had ended and that they were sending her back.
Shi Jin excused himself as he needed to go talk to someone, no doubt it was Mo Yeon but he didn't confirm when Yoo Ji asked. Yoo Ji could tell something was stressing out the Captain so she let it go, she was learning to do that a lot lately.
Yoo Ji waved at Dae Young as he left to check on Myung Ju, Yoo Ji continued to tell the rest of the Alpha team of her plans once she got back home.
After that, she decided to go visit Myung Ju, she didn't have time to go check on her, and she was wondering how her friend was.
“Myung Ju!” Yoo Ji gleefully called out. “How are you feeling?” Yoo Ji asked as she settled into the chair by her bed.
“I am feeling way better” Myung Ju grinned at Yoo Ji, Yoo Ji guessed it was probably due to Dae Young’s visit before hers.
“I heard a lot of about what you’ve been doing these days” Myung Ju teased, while Yoo Ji rolled her eyes.
“I like some danger, but it's been such a constant that I am growing sick of it at this point. I just want to go home and have some domestic danger and maybe even some good old Korean food.” Yoo Ji jokes, Myung Ju laughed, telling her that she was also craving pork belly and some alcohol.
Ki Bum knocked on the door and saluted Myung Ju, she nodded at him.
“Sergeant First Class and First Sergeant Lim requested both of your presence in the common room.” he relayed the information.
Yoo Ji nodded and helped Myung Ju down from the bed and they went to their destination. They found Mo Yeon already seated at the dinner table with all three men serving chicken soup into trays.
“I never thought I’d see that” Yoo Ji teased as she caught a glimpse of all the men wearing aprons on their waists.
“ Wow, this is so touching ” Myung Ju let out with an amazed sigh.
“ You look really good in those aprons, too. ” Mo Yeon complimented Shi Jin with a smile.
“ Well, I am the type that likes to make promises for the future. ” Shi Jin said as all three men took seats facing each girl.
“ You three have worked so hard, so we prepared this to help you regain your strength. ” Dae Young stated with a small smile.
“ But I don’t know if it will taste good, ” he added as they started eating.
“ This is really delicious! The seasoning is perfect, too! ” Mo Yeon stated, Yoo Ji, looked at the three men with an eyebrow raised.
“You guys don't know how to cook though,” she said.
“ This is Private Kim's work indeed. ” Myung Ju responded to Yoo Ji’s unanswered statement.
“ Isn't that right? ” Mo Yeon agreed and she took another bite. Mo Yeon sighed as she said that she will miss Ki Bum’s cooking when they go back to Korea.
“ When I was receiving commissioned training, I used to go to this ginger chicken stew shop in front of my school quite often. ” Myung Ju recalled, Yoo Ji choked on her food, knowing what the story is going to be. She locked eyes with Gwang Nam and gave him a smirk, she mouthed ‘watch’.
“ That's so true. I did see you and Min Yoon Gi eating chicken stew with ginseng together over at that restaurant. ” Mo Yeon responded. Shi Jin and Dae Young started to look confused before the gears in their head started working, same with Gwang Nam
“ I didn’t go with him, ” Myung Ju replied, pausing to look at Mo Yeon. they both seemed to forget that there were other people around them. Yoo Ji watched in amusement. Gwang Nam smiled at Yoo Ji having fun with this semi-argument between her friends.
“ He just followed me because he said that he had something to tell me. ” she continued before sighing and finishing with a question.
“ I think you are still misunderstanding that I wedged in between your relationship- ” Myung Ju didn't finish before Mo Yeon cut her off. Yoo Ji stifled a laugh.
“ You did wedge in. What did he need to talk to you about anyway? ” Mo Yeon questioned.
“ He was just saying that there was no relationship between you two. ” Myung Ju stated Yoo Ji looked at the two men as they sat back in their chair.
“ Did he say that he had nothing to do with me? ” Mo Yeon put down her spoon and turned towards Myung Ju.
“ Yes. He said that you two were nothing but study partners. ” Myung Ju answered.
“ We weren’t just study partners. We have had a thing since April! ” Mo Yeon scoffed at Myung Ju’s answer. Yoo Ji started connecting dots as new information was being revealed. Shi Jin and Dae Young scoffed while looking at their girlfriends.
“Hold on, Min Yoon Gi was in a relationship in April, it wasn't with either of you…” Yoo Ji trailed off, as all of them looked at her.
“What?” Myung Ju demanded.
“I was dating Min Yoon Gi in April, but I found out he was cheating so I broke up with him” Yoo Ji shrugged. Gwang Nam looked at her with disbelief. All five pairs of eyes were on her now.
“I didn't know that it was the same Min Yoon Gi” she stated, she didn't look bothered by the information but all three men were apparently.
“It seems like they were on bad terms with each other because of this Yoon Gi guy or whatever.” Dae Young said with a stoic tone and a blank look. “I don't think I can fall asleep because I want to see this Yoon Gi guy.” Shi Jin responded.
“How could he cheat?” Gwang Nam wandered out loud with an angry tone. Yoo Ji nervously laughed, glancing at the two other girls, who also looked like they wanted to hit themselves for even fighting over the topic. Yoo Ji scolded herself if anything that one thing she shouldn’t have said. They just got over an argument.
“ There's been a misunderstanding ” Mo Yeon stated, while Myung Ju and Yoo Ji nodded their heads.
“They were making such a big fuss to us about just a picture,” Shi Jin started off. Yoo Ji looked at Gwang Nam, he had his arms crossed and an eyebrow raised. She winced, and she was just having fun. Why did she have to add anything to the conversation?
“ And they were having another relationship elsewhere. ” Shi Jin continued, “ I am heated up right now. ” he shook his head
“ I feel like killing whoever this guy is that was messing with these girls. ” Dae Young gritted out.
“I’ll kill him if I ever meet him,” Gwang Nam added. All three of them stood up and started taking off their aprons.
“ I am thinking he is a doctor somewhere. ” Shi Jin started off, looking at Dae Young and Gwang Nam.
“He probably works at Haesung Hospital” Gwang Nam guessed, still looking very pissed off.
“ We should get a grasp of this guy and go do an FEO (Forcible Entry Operations) on him. ” Dae young suggested as they all left the table. The girls had their heads bowed, too ashamed to do anything else.
“ I don't know if I can hold myself when I see him. ” Shi Jin scowled.
“ Snipping will be too clean and an explosion will be a bit boring. ” Dae Young responded
“How about waterboarding then?” Gwang Nam added as they left the room.
Myung Ju rested her head in her hands, “ what kind of embarrassing situation is this? ”.
“ Who started talking about our time as students ” Mo Yeon snapped back.
“what are we going to do now?” Yoo Ji whined
“You’re the one that started talking about Min Yoo Gi” Myung Ju retorted to Mo Yeon.
“ Now is not the time to fight over this, how are we going to fix this mess? ” Mo Yeon asked.
“ Don’t worry about me, worry about yourselves, ” Myung Ju said offhandedly. Mo Yeon and Yoo Ji looked at her with questioning gazes.
“ All I have to do is pretend to be really sick, ” she replied. The two girls sighed. Yoo Ji shook her head and went to find Gwang Nam to try and nullify the situation.
“I am going, good luck, we’ll regroup at 1900 to see if anyone has lost their boyfriend” Yoo Ji joked as she walked out in the direction Gwang Nam went in. She found him in the soldier’s bunkers. She was reading a magazine, but he clearly noticed her walking into the room. Surprisingly there were only a few men hanging around but soon they filed out when they saw Yoo Ji standing by Gwang Nam.
“Come on, it’s not that big of a deal.” Yoo Ji stated, she nudged his body to the side and sat next to him.
“How could you let him play you like that?” Gwang Nam huffed.
“I didn't! That's why I broke up with him, remember?” Yoo Ji defended.
“Come on, it was so long ago” Yoo Ji tried again when Gwang Nam didn't respond. She started poking him as a way to catch his attention when suddenly he flipped them so that her body was under his and he had her hands grasped above her head.
“I never took you as the overprotective type” Yoo Ji teased, putting her arms around his neck.
“I am not, usually” he murmured as he came closer and brushed his lips with hers. Yoo Ji sighed and slightly lifted her head to chase his lips when he pulled back.
“Hey Gwang Nam-” a voice interrupted as Gwang Nam leaned down to meet Yoo Ji’s lips. Shi Jin smirked and leaned against the doorway.
“You better have a good reason for interrupting this” Yoo Ji growled as Gwang Nam rolled over next and got up, with a scowl on his face.
“Actually, I do. We're going tomorrow to Valentine to ask if she can foster Fatima, thought you'd want to say bye to your informant” Shi Jin told her of their plan.
“No it's fine, I will do it on my own time” Yoo Ji waved off, Shi Jin nodded and waved at them with a chuckle. As the door closed behind him, Yoo Ji looked at Gwang Nam with a mischievous smile.
“Will you finish what you started?” she stated.
“No, I think I am good. It's your punishment” Gwang Nam replied, rearranging his locker.
“But I didn't do anything!” Yoo Ji gaped at him, she got off the bed and went to stand between him and the locker. she stood on her tippy toes and pecked his mouth. Gwang Nam couldn’t conceal a smile, he leaned down to meet Yoo Ji halfway the second time she tried to kiss him. He put his arms around her waist as she stood on her feet again, making Gwang Nam lean down more. He didn't mind, he was just enjoying the feeling of her soft lips on his when the door slammed open again, breaking them apart.
“Oh hey!” Ki Bum enthusiastically greeted Gwang Nam as he went over to his bed.
“I am going to kill him,” Yoo Ji murmured, glaring at Ki Bum’s back. She was hidden from view, Gwang Nam towered over her frame.
“Not if I kill him first” Gwang Nam responded, resting his head onto her shoulder, and sighing.
“Oh I didn't know you were here too” Ki Bum turned red as soon as Gwang Nam moved away and Yoo Ji was revealed. Ki Bum realized he’d just walked in on their private moment.
-Early in the morning-
Yoo Ji was up and finished packing her stuff. She was so excited to go back but also going to miss all the fun she had here. She left her bunker and joined the girls for the last time to watch the ’Morning Doves’ one last time.
“ There’s a new face, ” Mo Yeon noticed. The front line of the jogging men was Doctor Song, wearing only shorts and chanting with the men with a proud smile.
“ He used to hate this, ” Nurse Choi said with awe.
“He’s trying to impress someone,” Yoo Ji teased from behind the three girls. Nurse Ha hasn't said anything yet but Yoo Ji knew that she was awkward.
“I haven't finished packing yet” Nurse Ha excused and hurriedly left. Mo Yeon and Yoo Ji chuckled as Nurse Choi looked at them with confusion.
“ A baby doesn't have to know. ” Mo Yeon responded when Min Ji asked what they were laughing about. Yoo Ji shook her head smiling, Mo Yeon and Min Ji excused themselves to finish up packing and Yoo Ji went to check if she left anything in the common room and the Medi-Cube.
By early afternoon everyone was ready and all packed up, the bell rang signaling the moment of silence for the fallen on the earthquake. Everyone faced the tower and the flag and paid their respects.
After that, Woo Geun gathered the Medical staff and took a picture of them, then with the troops, Yoo Ji joined that one. She smiled next to Gwang Nam and felt excitement run through her as she peeked a Gwang Nam smiling and saluting the camera.

Episode 7:
Mo Yeon came running in, she looked horrified, Yoo Ji couldn't believe that she had recorded her will and forgot about it. She grabbed her phone and yanked it off the aux, but the damage was already done. She fled the scene, it was hysterical. Daniel chuckled and looked at Gwang Nam and Yoo Ji with mirth playing around in his eyes.
“ Music really changes a lot of things, ” he told him, Shi Jin smiled back at him.
“ I seem to be in the center of that change, ” Shi Jin chuckled, he looked to the side at the window and strolled to the window before jumping out of it dashingly.
Yoo Ji’s mouth opened in shock, they were on the second floor, she went to the window with Daniel both looking at each other with disbelief. Yoo Ji looked back at Gwang Nam who was shaking his head grinning.
“ He has to teach me how to do that ” Yoo Ji looked determined, Gwang Nam looked at her with amusement.
“He can’t, it’s only for the Alpha team to use when pursuing romance” he winked. Daniel chuckled.
“You know how to do that?” Yoo Ji wasn’t totally surprised but she had to admit that impressed her and made her more attracted to this man.
“Come on, I have to go collect my money” Gwang Nam beckoned Yoo Ji over.
“You bet on their relationship?” Yoo Ji smirked. He nodded explaining that Woo Geun said that she would reject Shi Jin once again.
“I did too with Chi Hoon and nurse Choi,” she admitted, taking his hand so they could go collect their money. Daniel laughed, shaking his head at the two of them.
“Sergeant Choi! You owe me money!” Gwang Nam hollered at the man, he was with Cheol Ho.
“ Then do we now have to call Dr. Kang; sister-in-law? ” Cheol Ho asked. Woo Geun looked at him with annoyance as he brought out his wallet.
“They haven’t gotten married yet when they do, I’ll make you a bet then” Yoo Ji butted in from behind Gwang Nam. Woo Geun groaned and glared at her.
“ Personally, I don't like Dr. Kang. ” he sighed, taking his hand back without giving Gwang Nam the money.
“ What do you mean? ” Gwang Nam and Yoo Ji asked at the same time.
“ She's a doctor who makes a lot of money, and her face is pretty, too. ” Gwang Nam chuckled, Yoo Ji raised an eyebrow at him.
“Now that you say that, maybe I should’ve married her '' Yoo Ji joked. Gwang Nam chuckled, kissing her forehead.
“Omo! You guys are together?” Cheol Ho’s eyes were wide while Woo Geun rolled his eyes with a scowl on his face.
“What’s wrong Snoopy, you don’t like your sisters-in-law?” Yoo Ji bantered, watching Woo Geun sarcastically smile at her.
“ That’s why I don't like her, why would a pretty woman who makes a lot of money date a soldier? ” Woo Geun countered Gwang Nam’s statement.
“He’s handsome and he’s well mannered and comes from a good family, what more does a girl want” Yoo Ji scoffed at Woo Geun’s suspiciousness. She rolled her eyes, what she said was a joke, but it seemed like he was taking it seriously.
“They have great chemistry, Captain Yoo seems to really like her, why are you getting your panties in a twist?” Yoo Ji asked curiosity nipping at her. She knew he was married, but that’s all she got, sometimes this whole Alpha team was very frustrating when it comes to willingly giving out information.
“ Imagine if she knew what we did. Then it's "get reassigned to another troop" or "quit being in the army " Cheol Ho slapped his arm, Woo Geun started cursing. Gwang Nam took on a serious look, he quickly turned to Yoo Ji, who looked like she just got the best present ever; information.
“What does the Alpha team do exactly, Sergeant Choi?” Yoo Ji asked with a sweet smile on her face.
“ It's frustrating. So frustrating. ” he cursed again as he left, he gave Gwang Nam a pointed look before he walked away though. Yoo Ji caught it, it meant; don’t reveal anything or we all die. Yoo Ji decided that she will just let it go but keep the information to herself. She quickly asked Gwang Nam another question.
“ What is Sergeant Choi's wife like? ” she made eye contact with the tall man, he gave her a small smile appreciating her dropping the subject.
“ Just like Dr. Kang. She makes a lot of money, and she's pretty, ” he responded, Cheol Ho and Yoo Ji nodded her head, and there must be some marital problems then.
“Wait… Sergeant Choi didn't give us the 20,000 won before he left.” Cheol Ho tilted his head, Gwang Nam totally forgot about it, he turned around and yelled out, “ Aish, stop right there!. ”
Yoo Ji shook her head with a smile, she decided to go hang out with Mo Yeon, she’s probably hiding from everyone right now. She made her way to the Medi-cube but she found Mo Yeon just hiding behind the door. Gwang Nam was walking with Woo Geun, it seemed like they resolved their bet. She went to stand behind her when she found Myung Ju already standing there. She smiled, her two friends were not on good terms but they were getting there.
“ What are you doing? ” Myung Ju asked with her arms crossed and an amused smile on her lips.
“ I am not doing anything, ” Mo Yeon denied.
“ You were doing something ”
“ It looked just like you were avoiding people because you're embarrassed. ” Myun Ju tilted her head.
“Move on” Mo Yeon rolled her eyes.
“ You have guts, To think about dating the Special Forces Alpha Team Captain. ”
“ First Lieutenant Yoon, let me ask you something. ” Mo Yeon asked. Myung Ju nodded.
“ For you, Lieutenant, the work that your boyfriend does…it doesn't bother you? ” Mo Yeon wondered out loud. Yoo Ji didn't know that this was her thought process about the situation, she thought that Mo Yeon was playing hard to get because of her experience with men so far.
“ Will he get hurt? Will he disappear? Are you not scared of those things? ”
“It just seems like Sergeant Seo does the same line of work as Captain Yoo” Mo Yeon explained.
“ To be precise, using various land, water, and air routes to penetrate behind enemy lines, ”
“ Reconnaissance of guerrilla warfare, intelligence gathering, hostage rescue operation, destruction of key military facilities, ” she continued, “ persuasion to surrender, etc. are assignments they carry out while using their lives as collateral. ”
“But more than anything, I am more afraid of being separated from him, I am just glad that we’re under the same sky” she paused, and smiled at Mo Yeon, “Simply I am blinded by love.”
“Wow, I never thought I’d hear those words from you” Yoo Ji revealed her hiding spot behind the two girls.
“Yoo Ji!” Mo Yeon yelped.
“Mun Yoo Ji, it seems like all three of us are involved with the Alpha team,” Myung Ju hinted. With everything going on, Yoo Ji forgot to tell them that she might be going out with Gwang Nam, but even then ‘going out’ isn't even the right term to whatever they have going on. Yoo Ji doesn't know where things will go from now but she doubts it’s going to be easy.
“I wouldn't call it that ” Yoo Ji shrugged.
“We’re getting to know each other, I am still in the dark about too many things” Yoo Ji admitted.
“And you might never know anything, it's part of the package” Mo Yeon added.
“We’ll see about that,” Yoo Ji murmured but nodded at her. Myung Ju shook her head.
“Mo Yeon and her dilemma of how much danger they will be in and Yoo Ji’s need for information, why can't you just be happy?” Myung Ju didn't wait for their response, she walked away.
“How dare she?” Mo Yeon scoffed.
“She's right you know? We’re too demanding” Yoo Ji sarcastically let out.
-Next Morning-
The cries of the soldier in the early morning woke up Yoo Ji, she checked the clock and it was 5 o’clock. She thought might as well get up, and besides, she hasn't seen the ‘White Doves’ in a long time. She got out of her bunker and found the girls already assembled in front of the gates.
“ I'm teary from seeing this again. ” Nurse Choi said with a dreamy sigh.
“ It seems like we've come back to normal life. ” she continued.
“Good morning, don't you guys have to get washed up?” Yoo Ji teased as she jokingly shoved Min Ji aside and stood next to them so that she could see them too, finally rounding around the corner, muscles, and chests glistening with sweat.
“ It's nice that the symbols of a normal life are muscles and abs. ” Mo Yeon responded.
“ This must be a symbol of peace. ” Nurse Ha joined them, she was the only one who was actually washing up, she had her toothbrush in her mouth.
“ Looks like they are Urk's white doves ” Mo Yeon sighed.
“Don't you have a meeting with the U.N.?” Min Ji asked Mo Yeon, who in return nodded but didn't pay attention to her.
“I’ll just be late” she waved off.
Min Ji looked at Yoo Ji with mischief. “ Isn’t that Captain Yoo ?” she called out.
Mo Yeon didn't even hesitate; she just started running, and unintentionally running and disrupting the white doves marching. Yoo Ji laughed.
“How can someone be so gullible?” she shook her head.
“Nurse Choi?” Nurse Ha said with a serious tone.
“Yes”
“ Do people really kiss in between their work and personal life like that? ” she scowled.
“If they have time, yes” Yoo Ji answered, knowing that Min Ji won’t reply. Yoo Ji bid them goodbye and went to find Ye Hwa so that she can borrow her car to go to town, it was so hectic the last couple of days, but Yoo Ji still had a job and that was to get as much information on anyone and anything. She was told that Ye Hwa was treating Ki Bum and the soldiers in their bunkers.
“Ye Hwa I need your ca- well if this isn't a sight” Yoo Ji smirked.
“Yoo Ji!” Gwang Nam said with surprise, a second ago his face was buried in a textbook.
“What are you guys doing?” Yoo Ji tried to contain her laughter. All the soldiers present had needles in their back, probably a stress-relieving method, but Gwang Nam and Ki Bum had textbooks open and Gwang Nam was quizzing Ki Bum. Ye Hwa collapsed the book onto Ki Bum’s face.
“ You're going to take the high school graduation equivalency test? ” she asked as she stuck another needle into his back. Yoo Ji winced, she disliked needles, but if the situation rose she’d be able to use them but they still made her uncomfortable.
“ Yes, a man should at least be a high school graduate. ”
“You’re a nurse that can do acupuncture, so you must have graduated from a college”
“No, I didn't, my father was a doctor of oriental medicine and I just roughly copy what he does.” Ye Hwa answered bluntly, that put all the boys on edge. They all got up.
“I think I am fine” Ki Bum moved to get up, but Ye Hwa hit him.
“One wrong move and all your nerves will be messed up.” she snapped at him, all the men relaxed back on the bed but were still tense. Gwang Nam covered his face, Yoo Ji grinned at Ye Hwa.
“I need your car” she laughed when Ki Bum who was in confusion. Ye Hwa threw her the keys.
“Where are you going?” Gwang Nam asked.
“I actually have a job, I have to go to the bar to collect information from drunk patrons” she winked at him and skipped out.
“She’s so weird” one of the soldiers let out.
“Who goes to the bar to find information?” Ki Bum questioned lifting his head, Ye Hwa pushed it back down.
“Mun Yoo Ji is one of the best in her field, she was able to find Kim Hoon Jae” Ye Hwa answered him.
“The famous serial killer?!” Ki Bum’s muffled voice.
“How?”
“She was able to retrace his medical records but that's not how she caught him” Ye Hwa answered.
“She was able to find him because he was a regular at this one bar.”
“Aish that could be all luck, you can't find someone through medical records and hanging out in a bar that they visited.” a soldier scoffed.
“Kim Hoon Jae had Hodgkin's lymphoma, so he couldn't drink, the bar she hung out in was the only one in the area with two separate bars, one for alcoholic drinks and the other for virgin drinks.” she refuted.
“How do you even know that?” Gwang Nam asked, he was in shock, Yoo Ji was totally famous and badass.
“I was there when someone made the mistake and underestimated Yoo Ji, so I got suspicious and looked her up” she responded, focusing on taking out the needles.
Yoo Ji was at the base, she was following a lead on an arms dealer. He was well hidden, but Yoo Ji can get him. She was distracted though, she was thinking about what Myung Ju said to her and Mo Yeon. Yoo Ji wondered whether Mo Yeon will take Myung Ju’s advice or not and whether she will too.
“Mun Yoo Ji?” the soldier snapped her from her train of thoughts.
“Yes?” she responded, he handed her the folder that she requested. She smiled at him.
“Greet the Lieutenant Colonel for me?” she winked, knowing that the man will be infuriated.
She went back to the Urk base where Ye Hwa was waiting for her car.
“Thanks” Yoo Ji nodded at her as she was leaving.
“You might want to go talk to Gwang Nam, he’s pretty flabbergasted.” Ye Hwa commented.
“Why?” Yoo Ji narrowed her eyes.
“He knows about your involvement with the Kim Hoon Jae case”
“You told him” Yoo Ji wasn't surprised, she knew he would find out sooner or later but she didn't think it was going to be this soon. Yoo Ji sighed, she can’t keep her past in the dark any longer but she can at least still try to. Ye Hwa nodded at her.
Yoo Ji made her way to the common room to find Gwang Nam, but instead, she stumbled onto an amazing sight.
“ I have to go prepare a roll call for the soldiers. ” Shi Jin told Mo Yeon very stiffly, he didn’t seem angry, more awkward. Yoo Ji hid behind the door, her eyes shifted to Mo Yeon, who looked also awkward. Did something happen between them? Yoo Ji thought.
“ I have to go check on the patients, ” Mo Yeon said with a curt nod. A second of tension passed before Shi Jin saluted.
“ Power of unity. ” Yoo Ji wanted to burst out laughing. But her eyes widened when both of them turned around and had hay on their backs. She walked in but so did Doctor Song and Nurse Ha. all three of them looked at each other.
“ She’ll be really embarrassed later ” Nurse Ha saif shaking her head.
“ He must’ve been really happy earlier, ” Doctor Song said mischievously.
“He’s probably still in a good mood, Mo Yeon won’t talk about it for sure. I’ll go get the details for Captain Yoo” Yoo Ji decided with herself out loud. Nurse Ha took her by the shoulders and directed her outside.
“Stop sticking your nose in other people’s business and do something else” she shooed her away.
“You’re right I should go find First Sergeant Lim and find a haystack to roll in,” she winked before leaving Sang Hyun laughing and Nurse Ha glowering at her.
A while later Manager Jin rolls up to the Medi Cube and starts complaining about his neck hurting. Yoo Ji was around because she was helping Nurse Choi, she couldn't find Gwang Nam, she guessed he’s probably doing rounds. He’ll come to her when he's free.
“What's going on?” Myung Ju asked.
Manager Jin goes on a rant about how he needs to go back to Seoul, and that they shouldn’t dismiss him so quickly.
“ You wench, you think you're all that because you wear a uniform and because of your rank. I should just...! ” he raised his hand as if to hit her, but before he could even finish his sentence, Dae young grasped him from the back of his collar.
“ Come out, continue with your work ” he gritted his teeth. Yoo Ji couldn't walk out and follow them.
The next morning was the day that half of the medical team would leave. Chi Hoon was missing and they couldn't find him. Gwang Nam watched Manager Jin as he sat in what was supposed to be Chi Hoon’s seat.
“You think he threatened him?” Yoo Ji wondered.
“Sergeant Seo would’ve found out” he assured her but there was a suspicious tone as he talked. He didn't believe it either.
Around 7 o’clock in the evening, Dae Young checks the weaponry to make sure none of the weapons aren’t missing, and Gwang Nam decides to join him.
“Where are you guys going?” Yoo Ji asked the two soldiers.
“We’re going to the weaponry” Dae Young responded, Gwang Nam facepalmed and shook his head
“You shouldn’t have said that” he murmured to his superior. Dae Young looked confused.
“I wanna come with you,” Yoo Ji said excitedly.
“It's restricted to the general public,” Sergeant Seo responded with his usual blank face. Yoo Ji told him to wait a moment and got out a piece of paper and handed it to him.
“I do what I want” he read out loud, he looked amused but Gwang Nam looked exasperated.
“How many do you have of these?” Gwang Nam asked.
“A lot” she cryptically responded, Dae Young, looked at Gwang Nam, and raised an eyebrow.
“This is the fifth time she pulls out one of these,” Gwang Nam explains as he looked at Yoo Ji with a defeated sigh.
“She can come but she can't touch anything, and you can't tell anyone or we’re all fucked, okay?” he sternly told them. Yoo Ji fist-pumped the air.
“It always works!”
They made their way to the armory and Dae Young started checking the guns and ammo. He looked at an empty slot and sighed.
“I’ll be right back Shi Jin’s gun is gone, and I know he has it”
“Ooh! Look at all the pretties!” Yoo Ji let out.
“Can you please stop talking about assault rifles the same way you talk about shoes?” Gwang Nam let out an amused chuckle. She looked at their options, although limited still impressive.
“You guys sure have a lot of assault rifles for a unit that specializes in hostage rescue” Yoo Ji commented offhandedly. Gwang Nam did a double-take, how did she know about that? Did one of the boys let it slip, did he let it slip? He doubts it. He didn't let his face betray his emotions.
“Why didn't you mention that you were the one that found the serial killer Kim Hoon Jae?”
“I didn't think that my boyfriend would want to know that over my favorite color” Yoo Ji teased, but she was avoiding the subject. She really hoped he dropped it.
“I thought we already established that we’re not normal, therefore favorite colors aren’t found by asking but by observing which rifle you looked at the most.” he said jokingly but pointing at a Daewoo K2 assault rifle.
“Ha! You’re wrong” Yoo Ji cackled and pointed at an ADS amphibious rifle.
“Damn, I thought I got it for real this time” Gwang Nam grinned.
“ Harry Potter transmitting. Wolf, do you copy? ” Cheol Ho’s voice came through Gwang Nam’s radio transmitter.
“ Wolf transmitting. What is it? ” Dae Young responded
“ Yellow Tiger is scheduled to arrive tomorrow afternoon. ” Cheol Ho informed him. Gwang Nam’s eyes widened.
“Who is it?” Yoo Ji asked although she guessed it's probably the Lieutenant Colonel or the Commander.
“It's the Commander's call sign” he answered.
-in the Next Day-
Captain Yoo gave a small speech on how they will clean up the whole place ‘like they always do’ for when the commander arrives.
But Woo Geun arrived with the news that the Commander’s visit is canceled and that he’s expected to go greet him with the head surgeon.
“ Deputy Commander and Army Surgeon Yoon are also getting ready. ” Woo Geun added.
Yoo Ji looked at all the soldiers working hard, she admired their perseverance, even when it came to chores. She chuckled.
“I hope you weren't admiring our soldiers,” Gwang Nam said from behind her.
“If I was, would you turn into a jealous boyfriend?” Yoo Ji teased.
“Can't be a jealous boyfriend if I don't know the most basic information about my girlfriend, can I?” Gwang Nam countered. They had a stare off for a few more seconds before Dae Young came and broke it off. It seemed he was back from the meeting with the commander.
“Captain Yoo and Doctor Kang went to a village to check on children, they think they have the measles,” he informed Gwang Nam. he nodded and gave Yoo Ji one last glance before leaving with Dae Young to the main room to start communications in case they needed backup.
“I wish he would stop asking about that,” Yoo Ji groaned slumping against the wall.
“What’s wrong?” Woo Geun asked as he passed her, “trouble in paradise?” he smirked. Yoo Ji rolled her eyes in annoyance.
“I get why your call sign is Snoopy, you can’t help it” she retorted.
“Ya! I was trying to be nice, but you should know this” he pointedly held her gaze.
“Do not jeopardize First Sergeant Lim because of your need for information”
“Why does everyone keep on telling me that? I know when to stop” she gritted her teeth. She glared at him.
“I don’t know what your problem with Mo Yeon and I is but you should really get over it” she snapped at him leaving him, heading towards her bunker. She was done with people for today.
As she passed the common room she looked at the cabinet and brought the bottle of whiskey she was hiding in the back of the shelf.
“Where did you get that?” Doctor Song’s voice startled her.
“I was hiding it for a bad day, and it seems that it's today” she grunted at him.
“Alcohol is not the answer” he reprimanded.
“Look, alcohol is the only constant in my life” Yoo Ji responded waving her hand at him and leaving.
“God, I should tell Sergeant Lim about her alcohol problem,” he said, shaking his head.
-In the main room-
“Can you track my location?” Captain Yoo’s voice came through the walkie talkie
“Snoopy transmitting” Woo Geun answered, “There’s no known village where they’re at”
“Get hold of Doctor Daniel” Dae Young instructed him. Once he arrived, they informed him of the situation.
“This is a phantom village,” Doctor Daniel said.
Dae Young called Shi Jin and told him the information that Doctor Daniel gave them.
“ He said that there are instances where all of the kids in the entire village are traded as a part of gang deals. ” Dae Young explained to the captain.
“ They are always on the move so that is why it is called the Phantom Village. ” he continued. Captain Shi Jin was further away from Doctor Kang and the children, his eyes were drawn to a car making its way towards the village, David Agus had the window rolled and was looking out, he didn't seem to notice Shi Jin watching him.
“The house owner has arrived, speed things up” Shi Jin urgently told Dae Young. Dae Young barely got out a reply when the line went dead. Dae Young sighed, it seems that Captain Yoo and Doctor Kang were in trouble once again.
