8/8/18: Chemistry Jokes (Evie x Doug)

Evie, Mal, Carlos, Doug, and Jane sat at a picnic table working on homework. They thought it would be a normal study session.

They were wrong.

“Hey look, Doug,” Evie said, pointing to her chemistry homework. She had written next to the formula C12H22O11 We’re Goin’ Down. “It’s that Fall Out Boy song.”

Doug chuckled. Jane and Carlos peered over, eliciting a confused look out of the former and a smile out of the latter.

Mal didn’t look up from her homework. “It’s Sugar We’re Goin’ Down, isn’t it?”

Evie giggled. “You know me so well, M.”

Mal just sighed.

About a minute later, Doug said, “So . . . oxygen went on a date with potassium today. It went OK.”

Evie and Carlos chuckled. Again, Jane’s brow furrowed in confusion. Mal groaned.

“Wait.” Evie put a hand to her mouth in fake shock. “I thought oxygen was dating magnesium.”

“OMg!” Evie and Doug said in unison.

“Please spare us,” Mal groaned.

“What do you mean, Mal? What’s going on?” Jane looked around the table in confusion.

“They’ve started telling chemistry jokes,” said Mal, her head in her hands. “And they’re all. So. Bad.”

Evie placed her hand on Mal’s shoulder. “M, I can’t help it if all the good ones argon.”

Mal turned slowly to glare at Evie. It was on par with the looks she had given Uma and her mother. Even so, Doug and Carlos laughed.

“Oh, I get it!” Jane exclaimed. “Argon’s an element! It’s a . . . noble gas, right?”

“Yeah!” Doug high-fived Jane. “Wow, that joke got a great reaction.”

Evie burst out laughing. Mal lowered her head on to the table.

Carlos smiled and patted Mal’s head. “Okay you two, I think that’s enough. Mal’s gonna lose it if you keep on like this.”

“You’re right,” said Doug. “I mean, I was gonna make a joke about sodium and hydrogen, but NaH.” He and Evie laughed.

“You know, I was thinking of freezing myself to -273 degrees Celsius,” said Evie.

Jane’s eyes widened. “That sounds dangerous!”

“Oh, I’ll be 0K,” Evie giggled.

“I’m done.” Mal packed up her notebooks and walked away.

“Oh dear,” said Jane.

“She’ll be fine,” said Carlos. “Chemistry jokes just aren’t really her thing.”

“I look forward to taking Chemistry so I can actually get all these jokes,” said Jane.

“I only get some of them cuz Evie has been telling them to me in her spare time for a while now,” Carlos explained.

“So this bear fell into the water and began dissolving,” said Doug.

“Sweetie, bears don’t dissolve in water.”

Doug grinned. “Well, it was a polar bear, you see.”

As Doug and Evie laughed, Carlos whispered, “Yeah, I don’t get that one.” He shrugged and returned to his homework. So did Jane. They tried their best to block out the rest of the jokes.

Eventually, Evie took Doug’s face in her hands. “You are made of copper and tellurium.”

Doug looked up for a few seconds, recalling those elements’ chemical symbols. Then he blushed. “So are you.”
