The Continues Fight against Illegal Downloading

Ever since 1999 when Napster, The first major illegal file-sharing site offered downloadable MP3 files to the masses, The fight against illegal downloading has been going on ever since and we as an industry are still no where near finding a solution for this issue. Downloading is defiantly still a growing problem, if you search the web for the particular single or album that you want, you will find hundreds and thousands of different illegal downloading websites to download your music, As one illegal piracy site gets shut down another two more seems to pop up. THERE’S JUST NO WINNING!

Well there is one organization which is trying to combat the continues fight against illegal downloading. The city London policing intellectual property crime unit  which started in September 2012 and The units main aims is to tackle serious and organized intellectual property crime.

As the industry suffers as the rate of album sales drop more and more each year, the intensive for the Record label and artist to make an album is plummeting into the ground and it seems to be the artist who is suffering the most out of it all, as the record label take in the money from the album sales and pays the artist in royalties from the which is a very small percent, and this amount is getting less and less by the minute! But without a record an artist is nothing.

As far as who’s doing the illegal downloading its us the so called ‘kids’.  71% of illegal downloads are between the ages of 16 and 24, which means Secondary school and university students are the majority to blame but we the ‘kids’ don’t necessarily have lots of money to spend on purchasing music in the first place. I’m not going to sit hear and say that I’ve never downloaded illegally because I would be lying, but I have also brought my fair share of albums over the years but that still doesn’t give me an excuse to download illegally.

My view on the whole situation is that illegal downloading is wrong and no one should do it, But with the internet being so big and so many users its going to be very hard to crack down on the masses who are uploading the content in the first place. Maybe we should start cracking down on everyone who is downloading and enforce a punishment for people who download. Well for the time being I don’t think the fight against illegal downloading is going to be won any time soon.
