Pattyn held her breath as she walked through the threshold. The lights and smells of the club took her by surprise. She tripped on her tennis shoe string, and bumped into a man in a suit chatting with a waitress. Before he could look at her she stumbled away and made a break for the closest door. It was a closet, but it was empty. The music was still audible, but muffled and less obtrusive. She began to gather her thoughts. what am I doing here? What was I thinking? she asked herself. No. I am not going to run back to Maine like a frightened child. I do not need mommy's money anymore. I am going to march myself right up to that light booth and Introduce myself..... but where is the light booth? am I going to have to walk past all those people again? oh God. maybe I should just stay in here for a while.
