beta spearmasters
whats like, all (or most) of the info about the judge? i really wanna do a design for it but i don't have nearly enough energy nor time to look through the dev commentary that mentions it
- World would've been completely rotted, eg daddyworld mod - They would have been able to 'purify', undefined what that meant though - Similar to the Martyr mod in concept - Extremely fast spears, possibly aimed via the circle above their head? - Was never even coded into the game all this is from dev commentary + a dev interview in the msc discord in 2018
Actually I think I might have a question about SRS and Spearmaster if that’s ok, in the broadcasts it seemed like Suns was going to give Spearmaster a name once they return, do you have any fanon Spearmaster names Suns might have given them?
Spearmaster's given name is canonically Messenger! For all intents and purposes, Suns named SM Messenger and I tried to convey that in the logs. To SRS, Messenger / The Messenger is clearly a title they begin to use for SM as a means of respect and identification, something more personal and involved. Whether SRS realizes it or not they've named SM this - and insist in using it instead of old identification methods (07). I think by the end of the campaign the name definitely would have stuck - as for several cycles SRS has adapted to calling SM this when explaining them to NSH.
When SM went on their first mission they were probably no more than 07 - an attempt thrown to the wind, essentially, and probably not unlike prior attempts. But on their first return and their second mission, they've become a lot more important to SRS - they proved themselves. And thus, 07 isn't fitting anymore, they're "My Messenger".
If you don't mind me asking a question, why is Spearmaster attached so SRS despite what he did to it? He surgically(?) Put a pearl into its chest, removed it's mouth in return for a mosquito-like feeding from its tail, and probably other things. Spearmaster obviously doesn't seem to get much nutrition from this feeding method, and is very underweight. If I was in Spearmaster's shoes, i would be pretty upset with all that. So, why DOES Spearmaster trust SRS? I must know!
oohhh this is a fun one... all this is headcanon/the way i see it, however!
For one, we can definitely assume that SRS had to raise SM. He had to devise methods of communication that didn't use the mark. So even before SM was sent out the first time, SRS had to spend quite a bit of time on them. SM would reasonably have parental attachment towards SRS. I imagine that SM would not have been awake for the experience of having their pearl inserted or removed - SRS takes displeasure in the idea of the process being anything but slow and careful - so we can pretty safely assume that SRS doesn't want any slugcat to suffer regardless, and might not quite understand or see that the way SM lives could be seen as suffering (in comparison to others of their species.)
The logs state that the pearl helps give SM a sense of purpose ("A feeling in your depths sets you out once again") and direction. By the end of SM's campaign, they've made this journey twice now. They are probably expecting to be sent on another quest, so they go home. I imagine it is kind of like dogs that have incredibly specialized instincts passed down, like herding or hunting - they don't quite understand why, but they feel like they NEED to fulfill these urges.
Spearmaster's body is strange and perhaps not ideal for their own comfort, but I don't think they are capable of perceiving that, one, they are different than other Slugcats, and two, understanding that it is SRS that is responsible for that. To SM, SRS has been nothing but gentle and a place to call home. But to SRS, I am sure the feelings of guilt and shame set in as his attachment grows and he realizes just how much weight his choices have on Spearmaster.
"SRS: Anyway... I just hope that it can return back to me safely. And perhaps forgive me for this difficult quest..."
do you have any thoughts on srs's design? ik many were surprised that the direction downpour went in wasn't... seven red suns being the colour red
OH THIS IS A FUN ONE
my first SRS concept actually WAS red (oh god this is 5 years ago), but i wasn't incredibly sure how I wanted to make it work. at the time i wasn't confident in my ability to pull a primary red color off.
his next design iteration was like a mix of his old and current - i tried to keep the bright eyes, and tried to give him a green poncho, but it just felt too cluttered. i realized no matter what i wanted the marking on his head to be red - because it was a sun with seven points.
the final design ended up focusing much more on browns and oranges, with the red on his head being the accent point that draws your attention in. i wanted to give off the vibe of like, a sunset, and i always felt like going pure red would've been too harsh - especially considering how gentle of an iterator SRS is
how did you save spearmaster?
Spearmaster was on the table to be scrapped because of the fact Hunter had come out and had taken their previous mechanic - that was, dual spears. That's when they had been discussing other ideas. When I came on the team I was able to redesign spearmaster as well as be involved in the discussions on what their campaign should be. We actually were able to get Spearmaster in a playable demo state in like... a month or two? Everyone on the team had such a rush of motivation with it all because the end-goal was so clear :D And we had the excitement of the public thinking SM was gone, so we knew we could surprise them with bringing him back on RW's anniversary.
how about spearmaster's design then? remember at one point they had a mouth... wonder which point in development did they lose it?
spearmaster had a mouth pre 1.5 MSC demo, but it was before they were even the spearmaster we knew today.
the idea of spearmaster not having a mouth came at the same time the rest of their design did - but at the time i wasnt good at drawing expressions without a mouth and i would do expression practice on SM with a mouth (which is why there was some off model art in applebread streams lol)
spearmaster himself came from two concepts - the idea of being a dangerous predator that can immobilize creatures with ease, and the idea of being based on an existing RW creature. spearmaster was originally going to be a new design based on spitter spiders, but then i got the idea of the fact noodlefly mamas can turn their mouths from soft tissue into incredibly firm and sharp needles - something that could theoretically fix the issue spearmaster had of being too close to hunter.
then it was "well let's make it how you feed" because we thought about blood sucking mosquitos. the tail motif comes because i thought about porcupines, and it originally went up his whole back as well!
