Dowsers

Dowsers are in charge of the water in Orbita, with the abilityto manipulate and create it. The first of the Dowsers gained this ability from absorbing a weak Denizen who controlled water into them, and they carry on by splitting their own souls into pieces to give to new Dowsers. Outside scholars believe that this has made Dowsers into a ‘body’ of sorts for the unnamed Denizen.

All Dowsers are foundlings, abandoned infants left on the door steps or special ‘foundling boxes’ that the Dowser sanctuaries have. They are free to be adopted until they turn eleven, when then they are declared Dowser novices and begin their studies. The first head of the Dowsers, Saint Ondine, created the rule to avoid outside influences connected by blood.

Dowsers study history, mathematics, hymns, literature, and hydrology.  (In Impira they also learn architecture.) The young novices are typically secluded from the outside world and are often segregated based on gender, except in Julia where there is no segregation based on sexes. The novices are locked in study from sun to moon, with an hour long break midday to eat. These novices are infamously frazzled and morose, and there has been some discussion among Dowser elders about changing some of the traditions. At the age of 19 they are given the rank of Acolyte are apprenticed in groups of seven or ten to an elderly senior Dowser Master for another five years. At 24, the Dowser Master will split their soul and spread it into the Acolytes, which kills the Master in the process. The Dowsers are now considered proper priests/nuns. At the age of 70 they become Masters and the process repeats. Some Masters are elevated further into becoming part of the Circle of Elders. Members of the Circle of Elders are not allowed to take acolytes and hold their position for life.

Dowsers traditionally wear blues and blacks, with patterned sashes or ties denoting which city or district they’re from. There is usually a small attachment of Dowser nuns in hospitals, who wash the newborns in clean water. Alcohol making is a popular source of revenue for Dowser temples and sanctuaries besides donations. Celibacy is expected but of course Dowsers are merely human, occasionally there are ‘accidents’. These infants are given over to the Crypt Guards, of whom the Dowsers have an excellent relationship with.
