Tokyo the Doxiepoo.
Pet Portrait Commission for Andrew
Fourth week of dog grooming school
With this week gone by, I am officially halfway through the dog grooming program! I am going to try to keep the writing a bit shorter here though because this week was the first week of us getting two dogs a day instead of just one.
Day sixteen: Lucy the doxiepoo
Just to clarify, a doxiepoo is a dachshund/poodle mix. Also, this is the third dog I’ve groomed with the name Lucy! She has the dachshund body shape, but poodle-type fur that I shaved shorter. Poor Lucy though had a bad back and sensitive back legs when she came in though due to a recent fall she had. I tried to be gentle though and she was a real trooper through the groom. That big smile she has in the picture? She was glad to be finished!
Lucas the shih tzu mix
Mixed with what, exactly? No idea. Maybe maltese, but most likely crazy. This is like, the first sort of nuts/ “naughty” dog I’ve had to groom. For one, the minute he got handed to me, he took a huge shit on the floor. And also, this boy absolutely hates being blow dried. Despite the fact that I tried to keep him from moving around, he managed to break free from the neck loop, jumped off the table, and tried to escape. He was no better when my instructor tried to help me dry him. Not only did he violently twist and thrash around and nearly choke himself trying to jump off the table again, but he also squirted his um, gland juices on my instructor to try to get her to stop drying him. We just couldn’t do it. He had to go in the cage dryer, which ate up a lot of our time we had to groom him. So in the end, my instructor probably had to do more of the grooming than me because of that on top of him being sort of wiggly. And here he is at the end acting cute like he did nothing. The kicker is that my classmate got his brother, who behaved completely fine.
Day seventeen: Kya the labrador retriever
Day seventeen was a big deshedding day for me. Kya got the full deshedding shampoo and conditioner, blow dry in the tub, brush and rake the everloving fuck out of her fur treatment. This groom was pretty much the definition of a bathe and brush. A little less exciting compared to other grooms, but also very satisfying. It’s fascinating to see just how much loose fur you can get off the dog.
Molly the sheltie
Molly if I remember correctly, is a dog that my instructor recently took in that used to belong to someone else who can no longer take care of her. She is really really old. She’s fifteen years old, deaf, has malignent tumors, and is on all sorts of medications. So, I felt a bit nervous grooming a dog so old, even though she mostly just needed another deshedding treatment and a bathe and brush like the last dog. She was kept natural, so her before and after isn’t actually too different actually. She was a good girl though. She also shed so much just like Kya! You can make a whole new dog out of their fur.
Day Eighteen: Annie the mini goldendoodle
It’s not typical, but we were short on dogs that day so Annie was a collab between me and another student. She was such a great dog to groom! She was very well behaved and would let us do anything we wanted to her without a fuss. I also got some good clipper comb and scissoring practice on her. I was real happy to get to use scissors again because most of my grooms have just been shaves. And I think I got a lot better at scissoring on her legs too!
Day nineteen: Kandi the shih tzu
I got yet another elderly shih tzu that required a close shave down. This girl was especially frail, so she was treated with extra special care. Instead of the usual steps in my routine, she actually got the shave first, and then we finished off with a nice warm bath with special shampoo for her skin. She was too old to be blow dried so I just used a towel. She was a bit snippy about her feet and face, but it’s understandable because she’s old and she’s got that old lady pain. If you can tell in the pic she was totally over me by the end lmao.
Ace the dachshund:
Ace was a real peach! I felt like I really vibed and got along with him. Also on him I feel like I totally crushed it? He felt really easy to groom for some reason and I felt confident with him. This guy being a real good boy totally helped. First I carded him before his bath, then I did probably the easiest nails I ever done, and expressed glands for the first time ever. I was lucky and his weren’t so bad and not much came out. And after that he pretty much just got a brush, sanis, and any longer tufts of hair that stuck out trimmed with thinning shears. This boy was affectionate and playful, but a noisypants. He kept barking because he wanted to play with the other dogs. He was also a big attention seeker but that’s okay cuz I like him.
Day twenty: No dogs! Went on a field trip to meet other groomers in their salons to ask questions instead!
Stay tuned for week five!
I was sitting two inches away from Ms Rosa longdog and she said nope too far.
