Who remembers the chapter I posted ... at some point in the recent past? Well, I thought I’d put another one on here. If you want to read the whole story, it’s based here and I would love you to read it and let me know what you think. But in the mean time; this is chapter 11 and it can be read alone so enjoy :)
"Mama edding!!" Clara was awoken by her 1 year old tugging furiously on her hand. Ellie had become very confident on her feet in the last few months and it was certainly presenting a challenge. She'd become a lot more aware of what was going on too, especially where the wedding was concerned. Unfortunately Clara had experienced this awakening almost every day since they had bought Ellie her bridesmaid's dress and explained what it was for.
"She's a very clever little girl." Clara almost jumped at the addition of another female voice before realising her Gran was here too, which would explain why Ellie was no longer in her cot. "Your Mum would be very proud, especially today." Clara smiled at this and say up, picking Ellie up as she did and making room for her Gran to sit down beside them. Clara played gently with Ellie's hair as they sat there, knowing she would soon be all done up ready for the afternoon's events.
It still didn't quite feel real that it was actually today, the last few months had been somewhat chaotic as they miraculously managed to juggle work, wedding planning and an ever growing child. Looking back Clara realised she wouldn't ever change what had happened and she certainly wouldn't want to change Ellie's development, it made her who she was. Today wasn't really going to change very much, it was just a bit of paper after all, but it meant a lot to everyone involved and if everything went to plan it was going to be the perfect day. She had to smile at this thought, of how much today meant, but her thought pattern was soon interrupted by Ellie trying to stand up on her lap.
"Edding edding edding!!" Clara chuckled softly and helped her stand.
"Yes sweetheart, you're right this time. Today's the day..." She looked over to her Gran who always seemed to love watching the two of them interacting. "Could you take her down for breakfast while I get up? I won't be too long..." She was always conscious of asking too much of her Gran, but she was always more than willing and agreed almost before Clara could finish the sentence. "Now missy, you be good yeah? Mummy needs to get herself looking half decent and then we'll go see the hairdresser who's going to do the rest of the work." She popped Ellie back on the floor and kissed her forehead gently.
"You'll always be beautiful." Her Gran added before leaving the room with Ellie.
---
After a quick shower and deciding on a simple jeans/blouse combination for the moment, Clara made her way downstairs. She could only laugh as she watched Gran trying to feed Ellie using the aeroplane method and Ellie simply refusing ever so politely. She went to intervene before feeling her phone start to ring in her pocket. Turning away she went in to the living room to answer it.
"Good morning beautiful, how're you doing?" Danny's voice made her smile more than she already was.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that? How're you coping with my Dad?" As much as she loved him, Clara had visions of her Dad giving Danny all sorts of lectures.
"He's been very lovely actually, we had a good evening yesterday. How's Ellie?"
"Currently refusing to take any food from my Gran but otherwise very excited, especially as she finally right about today." Clara heard a laugh from the other end of the phone immediately followed by her Dad along who was on the phone. "Oops, you'd better go before we get caught. I'll see you later?"
"If I'm not busy..." Danny replied. Clara just rolled her eyes and hung up, going back through to the kitchen to intervene in the feeding.
"I thought I told you to behave!" Clara spoke to Ellie in a semi-serious voice, but really didn't want to get too angry today. She motioned to her Gran to move so she could take over, although she mostly left Ellie to it. "Sorry, only Daddy's allowed to do aeroplane and pretty much anyone else is banned from feeding her at the moment - we're going through an independent phase." Clara turned around so she could keep one she on Ellie while conversing with her Gran.
"She's certainly a bright girl, takes after her Mummy you know? You were very independent from an early age. I remember looking after you one day when you were a similar age and having to stop you from trying to use the phone. When I asked you who you were calling you announced that 'Mama need come' and next thing I knew you were sick everywhere!"
"You have such lovely stories about me..." Clara chuckled before giving her Gran a hug and standing up to grab a cloth to clean up the state Ellie had gotten in to. "Maybe leave that one out of the meal though eh?"
"I'll save it for the dancing don't worry dear. Someone needs to get out the embarrassing stories after all." They both laughed a little before everything fell a little silent for a few seconds. "Hadn't we be leaving soon?" Clara nodded, looking at the clock and picking Ellie out of her highchair. For the first time she was beginning to think what her Mum would be thinking about all this, what she'd be doing.
"Come on sweetheart, let's go get you dressed so we can go out yeah?" She smiled a little back at her Gran before heading upstairs, one thing she did know is her Mum wouldn't want her being sad today.
---
The morning went relatively smoothly in the end. Ellie sat beautifully still to have her hair done and looked ever so proud at the result, Clara had to admit she was very grown up for her age really. She then say transfixed while Clara had hers done, occasionally perking up with 'Mama edding!!' which would make the hairdresser laugh. When they did make it back home they didn't have all that long to get changed before the car was due to arrive.
"You go and get yourself ready while I sort out Ellie and then you can take her while I change if that's okay?" Since they'd left the hairdressers Ellie has practically been begging, in her own little way, to put her dress on. They split off at the top of the stairs and Clara took Ellie in to her room to change. "Right then my beautiful girl, you gotta let Mummy do this carefully okay?" One thing Ellie was generally very good at was staying still when needed which today was a very useful behaviour. Clara sat her down for changing as she hadn't quite grasped the balance needed at this point in the day, only standing her up when the dress had to go on. After wriggling tights on and fastening shoes, Ellie was finally ready to go. She squealed enthusiastically when Clara placed her in front if the mirror, pointing wildly at her reflection. "You're going to steal the show from Mummy looking that cute, but that's okay, you deserve it." Ellie responded and turning around and giving Clara a huge hug. "Thank you sweetheart, shall we take you to Granny O now?"
Once Clara had persuaded Ellie to let go of her leg she went through to her own bedroom, bringing out the dress and hanging it ready to be changed in to. She stood for a while just taking it in and taking a moment to just calm herself. Her gaze drifted over to the picture that sat on Danny's bedside table. It was a simple one, just a selfie they'd taken on one of their first dates, but Danny had insisted on having it printed. They'd come a long way since then, had a few ups and downs, but it was a reminder that they'd come through them and ended up with a near perfect life and they were still just as in love as those early days. Clara noticed a tear beginning to form which knocked her out of the mini daydream and back to the present.
It took her a few minutes to get herself in to the dress and get it fastened, but once age was ready Clara made her way out and downstairs. Ellie obviously heard the movement as she suddenly appeared at the bottom with Granny O quickly behind. When she looked up Clara noticed her Gran almost ready to cry.
"Oh Clara dear, you look beautiful... really gorgeous." Clara made it to the bottom and smiled, thanking her. "I knew it, I knew that dress would need perfect on you." She was right too, Clara couldn't deny this was the perfect dress, but not because of how it looked on her. "You look just like she did... I remember your Dad's reaction when she arrived and I reckon Danny's will be pretty similar." Clara hadn't told him she was wearing her Mum's dress of course, but her Dad knew - it was his idea. Clara had been reluctant at first, but right now she was grateful for the persuasion from her family. "The car's here anyway, it's time." Clara nodded, taking her flowers in one hand and Ellie's hand in the other before leaving the house.
---
Her heart was beginning to pound a little as they arrived at the church which her Gran had obviously spotted and was doing her best to distract Ellie on the last bit of the journey. When the car stopped, she took a deep breath before the door opened and she followed her Gran and Ellie out of the car. As planned, her Dad was waiting there for her having escorted Danny here first. He too looked about ready to cry when Clara stepped out which wasn't all that surprising really. She made her way over and gently hugged him.
"She'd be so proud," he whispered in her ear as they embraced briefly. Once they pulled apart he spoke up, "best get you inside hadn't we?" Clara nodded. She carefully crouched in front of Ellie and straightened her dress.
"Showtime El..."
---
Anything could have happened in the following 30 seconds, but what did happen was exactly as they had planned. The doors opened and Ellie went in solo first. Granny O wasn't far behind, but Ellie duly made her way down the centre aisle holding her mini flowers (which took a lot of concentration) and everyone was taken in by the high level of cute. Clara followed behind, giving everyone enough time to get over Ellie before they saw her. Danny also turned his attention as Clara made her way down on her Dad's arm. His face was something else, Clara wasn't sure she'd seen this expression before. When she reached the front Dave let go and picked Ellie up from where she has positioned herself by Danny, making his way to his seat by Linda.
"You look... amazing," Danny started quietly as they moved in to position before adding, "just like your Mum." Clara's head darted up and Danny simply smiled. He'd noticed. There wasn't time for anymore words however as the ceremony started.
It was perfect; everything was going entirely to plan. Then they reached what, for Clara, was the most nerve wracking moment of the lot - their own vows. She'd didn't longer than she'd care to admit on these trying to get them perfect but nothing seemed to work. As an English teacher people seem to expect everything you wrote to be beautifully poetic and wonderfully descriptive, but it really wasn't that easy. In the end she gave up, Clara had gone for the one thing she never thought she'd do in her life - winging it.
"Once upon a time I decided that it would be a great idea to become a teacher. It was a great idea actually, and everyone told me how rewarding it was after all the hard work etcetera, but nobody told me I'd end up meeting the most wonderful man who would, by some miracle, put up with all my weird quirks and strange ideas to stick by me through so much. We both know I'm not perfect, we both know I've made some stupid errors, but once upon a time I made a promise to you - I would tell you if things got too much, I'd be open about all my feelings and never shut you out. Well today I'm making that promise again on a much bigger scale. We have a perfect daughter and a wonderful family of support, I promise you that will never change now. I'm afraid you're stuck with me Mr Pink..." Clara looked Danny in the eyes, they both knew exactly what she meant through that and they both knew it was the truth. Then it was Danny's turn.
"We both made a lot of mistake when we first met. Of course I nearly blew it totally on day 1 when I turned you down, but luckily you knew something I didn't. We managed to both walk out on our first date and by the second I could barely speak, which is, incidentally, why I had to write this down today - maths teacher." Clara chuckled gently, having to use a hand to wipe an escaping tear at the same time. "By some miracle we made it through a multitude of disasters to get here and now. So here are my promises to you Clara: I will always look after you whatever happens, I will always be close by. When you need time alone I won't badger you for answers, but when you need a shoulder to cry on I'll be the first in line. I'll always try to provide you with the best, but whatever happens I will make sure our family are always safe. I said no to you on that day, but I can never do that again Miss Oswald, especially once you're stuck with Clara Pink..." Clara didn't know whether to laugh or cry right now, she just held her gaze with Danny, squeezing the hand they held until the vicar interrupted the moment, pronouncing them married. Danny smiled and then lent in and they shared the most special kiss.
Danny Pink… my king… that guy is so beautiful. I need a Danny Pink in my life. The thing is you see, sometimes I think Danny is crazily underrated, people don’t always see him for who he was.
Danny was a guy, just a normal guy who had a tough childhood and went in to the army. He had a bad experience in the army, he came back and made a change, went in to teaching. It wouldn’t have been easy for him, leaving what he knew and having to live with what had happened, but he did it. He stayed strong and he moved on and went in to something else he loved.
As a teacher he was loyal to his other staff members and his pupils. He went in there with the sole aim of teaching maths and helping the pupils to become stronger with the soldier skills. He ended up with something a little more because in an instant he found himself falling in love with that small wee English teacher from Blackpool…
What he didn’t know was that he was having to share her with a big grey haired stick insect from Gallifrey with a time machine and the whole universe at his feet. Despite all the weirdness though, he stuck by her and appreciated every second he had with her.
When he did find out, it wasn’t easy for him of course. There was a trust problem there, but love prevailed and eventually he knew he had to understand, and he did that. But not without making sure he did everything he could to protect the woman he loved, to make sure she was safe. He didn’t jump in the TARDIS and run away, he couldn’t do that, he didn’t want that - for once a character that chose to stay on Earth. He saw wonders: ‘One person is more amazing, harder to understand, but more amazing than universes.’
Then he died. Taken too early, sent away to the nethersphere. Things turned nasty, but he fought everything to save the woman he loved, to make sure she would be safe. Danny Pink saved the world purely so he could save his girlfriend that is dedication and love! And then just to top it all off, just when you thought Danny Pink couldn’t break you anymore, when he had a chance to come home he saved the little boy he killed all those years ago - he sent a little boy back to his family rather than himself.
And if that doesn’t hurt, I don’t know what does.
So yeah, I love Danny Pink, I love his character, I love everything about him because that is just a guy with principals, he’s not perfect but he tries his damn hardest to do what he can.
