Hermione Granger would have been a Family Doctor

The AU I could live with, part 1.
Give me badass Granger parents. Give me the muggle parents that broke the memory charm because their daughter gave them fake names which goes against the one and only thing they’d ever kept secret from her--they don’t have names beyond the surname from Dr. Granger’s family. Their lives both simple and complicated. Amnesia and family problems were their biggest heartaches before Hermione started only being in their lives two months of the year. Give me Grangers who went looking for the little girl who they don’t really know enough about anymore, but love her anyway. Give me the memory charm always trying to reassert itself, cutting off pieces of the names and locations Hermione had told them over the years, but their never giving it everything it was supposed to erase. Give me a Dr. Granger who could handle Deatheaters and the Malfoy family simply by being the most brilliant, friendliest asshole in the universe. Give me Mrs. Granger getting the both of them properly into the wizarding fight by gathering up everything that would be useful for traveling on foot; outdoor clothes, provisions and all of her memories of early life as a mixed race Sylheti/Bede Roma always on the road. Give me them being able to use Floo Powder, because there was a little hidden in the house that Hermione wasn’t aware of. Just in case. Give me the both of them immediately heading for the Forest of Dean before trying to get to Hogwarts through the Scottish backwoods; the only real thing they had to hold onto from what Hermione let slip from her first year. Let me see them realizing they are totally on the right track when they run across Dean Thomas and Ted Tonks fleeing from Snatchers with Griphook. Give me the two of them trying to save them; Dr. Granger going to surprise the Snatchers and the rather unpleasant werewolf by the name of Greyback and Mrs. Granger coming up behind them and beating them across the face with a young sapling tree she yanked out of the ground. Let her husband just barely avoid getting bitten by Fenrir before Ted finally cursed and body-bound him. Give me Dean Thomas lucky enough to get out of imprisonment another day and the father of Nymphadora surviving death; not knowing who either of them were until they mentioned Hermione and then offering to help as it’s better to be in a group of five than just threes and twos, it seemed. Give me Dean filling in the blank spaces in their memories with stories from Hogwarts, about their daughter, about the Golden Trio, about Snape taking over the school, about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (”How utterly ridiculous; this man sounds like the worst narcissist ever,”) and how wizards of Muggle birth and halfbloods were at particular risk of death. Give me the Grangers being so proud of all the people who are fighting--especially their daughter, but also so sad that she didn’t think that they’d try to help and give support. Give me the lot of them getting caught by Snatchers mere days later and being taken together to Malfoy Manor, injured and victims to Cruciatus and stunning spells, but neither Granger being assumed as Muggle as they knew a lot about the goings on and made comments about hypocrisy on the way to the cellar. Give me Doctor Granger being unrecognized but clever with words when confronted with a geared up set of Death Eaters, Dean being noted as a half-blood and possibly useful as a Gryffindor from the DA; Mrs. Granger being spared from questioning or being killed because Draco noticed with blood gone from his face and shaking hands just how much she looked like Hermione and telling his father that he’d take them down to the basement, get them set right. Give me Ted just glaring at Narcissa and looking pitifully at Draco and not saying a thing when asked his blood status or name. Give me Griphook snarling insults, but not letting on, because these Muggles might end up proper bargaining chips down the line. Give me Doctor Granger thanking the blonde boy very quietly on his way down to the tombs. Mrs. Granger greeting Luna and Ollivander as pleasantly as possible with rope burns and bruises making every step and movement uncomfortable. Dean saying hi to another DA member; one that should have been safe given her blood status, but probably an easy target too. Give me Ted being grateful to be in the company of people just as afraid as him. Give me Lucius being caught in conversations with the Muggles each time Bellatrix decides to have a go at them and they need fixing up after they say things she doesn’t like, and take extra beatings because they wouldn’t let Bella or any of the bigger Death Eaters near the teenagers or the old man, or Ted when he voices an opinion, or Griphook because “picking on someone not your own size and probably more powerful” came off as bad form. Give me Narcissa noticing that they don’t heal nearly as well as the other prisoners, but her son seems a little stronger around them, so she keeps her mouth shut. Give me the lot of them getting out after Bellatrix being in a foul mood and slipping up just enough to make a mistake that allows Doctor Granger to headbutt and knock out the low level Death Eaters holding him, and Mrs. Granger enough leverage to sucker punch Bella in the throat and lock her in a sleeper hold. Give me Draco bringing up the other prisoners and telling them all how to get to Hogwarts the safest way. Give me the Grangers giving Draco and his parents the keys to their house, telling them to take Ollivander there with them and the Floo Powder; the Malfoys heading for the first time in their lives to a Muggle house that was far safer than their own, and the Grangers, Dean, Ted and Luna Flooing to the Lovegood house. Give me Griphook deciding to go to Gringotts to, maybe, persuade some of the other goblins to help. Give me the Grangers making it to Hogwarts and the castle recognizing them as allies, letting them in. The first Muggles to ever set foot on the grounds without being turned away.
Doctors Granger:
And why nobody knows their names.
Dr. Granger: Who lost his first name when he was five years old and never found it again. Who was born the only child of two very secretive biologists that studied the wilderness and lived in the countryside in an old brick residence. Who was born at home and only had one doctor at the birth who wrote down his name, but lost the files in a move. Whose family home and parents were taken in a fire during Christmas; his father tossed him through a window and saved his life, but he hit his head on a tree branch and lost most of his memories--he regained some, but not enough to ever recall his name. Who carried on well enough; he might have lost everything he ever knew, but his parents’ money kept him healthy and allowed him to go to university. Who met his wife while she worked at a pub he went to for studying. Who took to introducing himself and his wife as Dr. Granger and Mrs. Granger, Md. and usually leaves it at that. Who calls his wife Darling as a reference to the first drive-in movie they ever saw together. Who remembers everything about every time they went to Diagon Alley--especially Lucius and Draco Malfoy. Who, after Hermione finally started dating Ron, became friends with Arthur in earnest and did his best to help where he could with the wizarding rebuilding process.
Mrs. Granger: Who was born into a family comprised of a Sylheti mother who married a Bede water gypsy and was the seventh child and only daughter. They partook in a tradition where their children named themselves by their seventh birthday. Who was very ambivalent about picking a name and sharing it with her parents and six older siblings--and never got to choose because a month before her sixth birthday, there was a flood and their houseboat was rolled and destroyed, killing everyone but her. Who was transferred to a group home and had selective mutism until she left for university. Who never loved anyone like she loved her husband until her daughter came into their lives. Who wasn’t as surprised at Hermione being a witch as most people would have been; she had a feeling about her mother’s mother. Who calls her husband Dearest, which is probably why some people call him Dan. Who made sure to start Hermione reading early and was quite pleased when her girl managed to read ‘Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH’ without any help at all by the time she was seven. Who, for sure, would have been a Hufflepuff had she been a witch. Who shares with her husband a general description among their colleagues and neighbors of being much like a Clydesdale; fairly tall, mellow, gentle and considered not worth getting angry. Who braided Hermione a bracelet made of her own hair to tie around her daughter’s scarred arm; it’s meaning something Hermione would have to figure out for herself. Who both went along with the memory charm Hermione cast on them, not because it worked (she gave them fake names; a thread that they picked at until the whole thing fell apart) but because they had faith in her.
Things I REALLY want from Next Gen II
Arthur Weasley and Dr. Granger being extremely involved with the goings on in the Wizarding and Muggle World--with Lucius Malfoy. Granger being the not-so-unofficial chill dude who started being referee between Arthur and Lucius, like, the second everyone found out Albus, Scorpius and Rose were best friends in second year. Arthur technically not breaking any laws telling Granger about the wizarding world because the man’s daughter helped save it and proceeded to introduce him to EVERYONE after the war. Also, Arthur dragging the man around to help babysit, because Molly and he can’t do it alone and it was about time someone showed the Grangers how the Floo Network functioned; sort of payback for Granger showing Arthur how to use the subway--though at least Dr. and Mrs. Granger didn’t vomit. Lucius constantly running into the two and just kind of surrendering to getting to know them after Scorpius made a comment on old dogs and new tricks--he’s a Malfoy! He’s not too old to learn to do anything!! Even actually spending time with...a muggle (he’s pretty sure Hermione’s mother is a Squib proper and her dead parents just never said anything--there are suspicious heirlooms hanging around the Grangers’ family dental practice to back him up). Lucius and Arthur still refusing to agree with each other on much of anything--other than getting advice from Granger on what to wear before walking out into Muggle London (the dress and bell-bottom pants incident was embarrassing for everyone involved,) and knowing full well that if Granger had gone to Hogwarts, he would have been a Hufflepuff. And liking Muggle food more than they ever thought they would. Granger introducing the two to instant cappuccino and espresso and still not apologizing to Molly, Narcissa or Mrs. Granger.
Things I REALLY want from Next Gen I
Lucius Malfoy Repentance and Forgiveness. I want Lucius to be haunted forever after finding out Snape spent and gave up his entire life for the sake of the wizarding world and he never got to say he would have helped him. I want Lucius to be an incredible wreck after the authorities were done with the manor and the finances and leaving his family with just the bare essentials. I want Harry going to thank Narcissa and Draco after everything and Lucius excusing himself not because of Harry, but because of his own shame. I want Lucius and Narcissa trying to accept Astoria and trying to believe she knows what she’s doing and that Draco does too, but not knowing how. I want Lucius still working for the Ministry, but in a very small way so that he constantly runs into Arthur and can’t even regain the snide remarks he used to make because he is constantly battling depression and self-hatred. I want Lucius being left alone in the Manor a lot of the time because Draco just had Scorpius and is trying to be as hands on as possible and Narcissa is trying to rebuild ties with her sister as well as Teddy. I want Lucius to be so miserable that he starts forgetting to eat and sleep and starts going out of his comfort zone into Muggle London just to wander around in the middle of the night. I want Lucius to be sitting in a Muggle park where he’d run into Hermione’s father and Arthur as they’re watching over the Potter children as well as Rose and Hugo. And because Lily Luna and Hugo threw a ball too far, it rolled over to Lucius and Dr. Granger mentioned remembering him after he’d gotten the ball and looked him over (thinking he might be asleep or sick). I want Arthur to take a look at the state Lucius is in and drag him along back to Granger’s home to have some tea and cakes before flooing Narcissa, since he knows she’s seeing Teddy and Andromeda that day. I want Lucius to get better after that, but to REMEMBER the incident after Scorpius starts at Hogwarts.
