Years ago I saw this movie and then read the book, and although I don't remember a lot of details, I remember the premise.
The main character starts seeing what he thinks is the ghost of this girl that everyone thinks is dead from a sailboating accident. It turns out she's alive and he has to save her. It was Charlie St. Cloud.
Make it Rabbot.
No. Really. Robby gets into an accident while on sabbatical and they all think he's dead because no one has heard from him. Then his "ghost" starts showing up. Jack realizes he has to save him.
Anyone can take this prompt. I'll try at some point but if I post to Tumblr like this, it's also up for adoption or up for Tumblr comment discussion.
It was your day off from the hospital and thank god. You loved the place, but Jesus you needed this. You woke with your alarm at six, getting a whole extra hour of sleep and make your way to the bathroom. Grabbing a quick shower you got changed and left the house. Walking with a pep in your step, you made it to the cafe before seven thirty, Maddie greeting you at the door.
“Well good morning stranger,” She grinned, unlocking it before locking it behind you.
“You alright Mads?”
She laughed, “Yeah, everything’s good my end.” She said, “And how are you doing Doctor Hotshot?”
“Getting by,” You snorted, making your way over to the coffee machine. The smell of coffee relaxes your shoulders almost instantly. “I’ve got time for a coffee before we open, right?”
“Eh, why not?” Maddie laughed before leaning against the other side of the counter. “Barbara came in yesterday,”
“Ugh, why does she keep coming back?”
“Our coffee is too good.” Maddie sighs before continuing, watching as you filled the group handle with coffee and leveled it off, “Anyway, she comes in, Jasmine makes her drink, she immediately drinks it and just starts shouting that Jasmine purposefully burnt her tongue.”
“What?” You scrunch your face, wiping the access coffee off before placing it back and pulling the shots.
“She started having a go at Jasmine because she took a sip of a hot drink and it was hot.” Maddie rolls her eyes, “Bare in mind, she has her drink extra hot.”
“I hate this woman.”
“Me fucking too.” Maddie laughed, her grin widening seeing you fill a reusable takeaway cup with ice, one that she’s not seen you use before. She doesn’t comment on it. “Another vanilla oat iced latte for you, Mr Predictable.”
“Always.” You snort, “And it’ll be Doctor Predictable soon.”
She rolled her eyes, muttering about how that's technically a year and a half away. “Are you sure you don’t want to try it with soy milk?”
“That is fucking disgusting.” You gagged, “If soy milk was the last drinkable substance on this earth, I’d dehydrate. When someone orders soy milk, I genuinely feel a part of my soul die.”
“You’re so dramatic,” Maddie wheezed, making her way to the door to unlock it. “It’s not even like soy milk is that bad.”
“No, it’s worse.”
As she makes her way back to the counter, a swarm of customers (okay, maybe like, five and Ronald, but he doesn’t count, he’s a regular). You pay no mind to them until they reach the counter, clearing two group handles and flushing the group heads.
Ronald reaches the counter first and you beam at him, “Ronald! Good morning,” You grin.
True to his character, he smiles, “Mornin’ (Y/N), can I get my usual?”
“Of course,” You nodded, already making it. “How’ve you been?”
“Usual, the sun’s shining and I’m alive.”
“Both very good things,” You reply and Ronald laughs.
“No complaints from me,” He shakes his head, smile still intact. “I’ve heard you’re still working towards being a doctor. How’s that going?”
“Long hours,” You chuckle, “But it’s going good. Yesterday someone came in with a carrot somewhere… interesting. So that was fun.”
“No, no, don’t tell me,” Ronald says, covering his ears. “I don’t want to know.”
“Alright, alright, doctor talk to a minimum,” You snorted, placing his latte down carefully. “There we are for you.”
Ronald grinned at the latte art, “I knew you were soft for me really.” He teased, seeing the love heart.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” You replied as he handed you the money.
“You keep your secrets.” Ronald huffed another laugh before making his way to his usual seat.
Between you and Maddie, the queue of five is gone in less than three minutes. And there’s a lull of customers. You take this time to give the machine another once over. The next small wave obviously decides to happen then. Maddie deals with the first two customers (two large soy lattes) as you begin to check the rate of pour, eyes firmly on the timer.
“Yankel,” A voice groaned, as the bell on the door chimed and two footsteps entered the cafe. You keep your attention on the coffee machine, watching the timer, so far it looked good.
“Well, Mishka,” The second voice resorted, “You need to be safe, I’m your emergency contact and I don’t want to be contacted because you’re having a midlife crisis and refuse to wear a fucking helmet on a deathtrap.”
“Bonnie is not a death trap,” The first voice scoffed.
“She absolutely fucking is, brother.”
You listen, but continue to ignore them, the voices being familiar, but they’ve probably just been in here before, so you pay it no mind. Maddie looks at you, “Can you steam some more soy milk? Sorry, I’m out my side.”
You felt your eye twitch, fucking soy milk. “Yeah sure.” You make a quick job of it, filling it up and sticking it under the steamer after purging it, reaching for the travel cup with your free hand. You turn to the next customer.
“What the fuck?” You turn around at the exclamation, milk jug in one hand and your iced latte in Jack’s-Now-Yours travel cup, sipping at the paper straw you threw in, Voice Two speaks up. Jack, and next to him, Robby.
“Are you guys following me?” You snort.
“Absolutely.” Jack answers, trying not to let the fact that you’re using the travel cup warm his heart too much (he fails, you’re his kid - he’s allowed to feel this paternal, work kid or not, a kid’s a kid).
“Absolutely not.” Robby corrects.
“In that case, what can I get for you?”
“Can I get a latte, please?” Robby grins.
“Of course,” You nod, poking the till, “And for the night shift gremlin?”
“That’s just rude.” Jack scoffs as Robby coughs behind his hand. “I’ll, er, get a caramel soy latte.”
You laugh, “Soy latte?”
“Don’t laugh, I’m lactose intolerant.”
“I’m pretty sure I’ve seen you eat cheese.”
“That’s because I don’t always make good decisions.”
“You didn't even fucking slice it, just munched into a bar of it!”
“Sometimes I make really bad decisions.”
“It’s true,” Robby laughed. “Also, isn't it a block of cheese? Not a bar. It's not chocolate.”
“You'd think it was the way he was chowing down on it.” You huffed before turning to Maddie. “They’re unbelievable, do you see what I have to put up with?” You scoffed, waiting for the till to unfreeze.
“Oh, these your work dads?” She asked. You grinned widely as Robby groaned and Jack laughed.
“Yeah, Robby, and Jack.” You motioned, Maddie nodded.
“Nice to meet you,” She smiled. “I'll let (Y/N) make your drinks - don't let his behaviour fool you, he makes a mean latte.”
“Don't set their expectations too high, Mads, Jesus.” You said, before giving Jack a serious look. “I'm not giving you soy. That's just rude. You're getting oat. Unless you're gluten free, this oat milk isn't gluten free.”
“How isn't it gluten free?”
“I don't know, I just work here.” You shrug, “You gluten free or not?”
“Not.”
“Cool, oat milk it is.” You grab the oat milk as you speak, having already started pulling the shots.
“And if I was gluten free?”
“Then you’d be getting coconut milk.”
Jack rolled his eyes, “And if I was allergic?”
“Then you’d get normal milk and just have to shit yourself because we don’t do almond milk here.”
Robby gave a loud laugh at that, “Why are you so against soy milk?”
“It’s just evil.”
Once you had charged them, they both made their way to the closest table and sat down. Maddie looked around the cafe for a moment before turning to you. You rinse both milk jugs with a small sigh, you new they weren’t going to let this go either. Especially not with Jack having witnessed your… minor flap yesterday on the roof. It was genuinely starting to feel like they were following you though - they just seemed to pop in out of nowhere.
“Go, sit down,” Maddie shooed you off, “Relax.”
“Are you sure? I don’t mind serving-”
“Relax, dude, catch up with your work dads.” Maddie said.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes I’m sure.” Maddie rolled her eyes with a huff. “My only ask: if Darren comes in, can you serve him?”
“He’s still giving you hassle?” You asked, a frown making its way across your face.
Laughing, she shook her head, “Go catch up with your work dads.”
You rolled your eyes as you made your way over to them. “I’m taking that as a yes. I’ll drop kick the dick if he comes in.” You called over your shoulder.
“Atta boy, (Y/N)!” Ronald cheered from his seat, you shot him a grin and a thumbs up.
“Who’s this Darren?” Robby asked, not even attempting to hide his curiosity.
“Maddie’s ex,” You said, “Comes in here all the time, ‘Please Mads, just take me back, I still love you, can I get a latte?’, won’t take no for a fucking answer.”
“You seem awfully invested.” Jack comments, taking a sip from his cup with raised eyebrows.
“If you met the guy, you’d also want to kick his teeth in.” You resort, “They guy’s a total fucking tool.”
“Fair enough.” Jack snickered, before pointing at his latte. “This is good by the way.”
You grin, “I know.”
“Which brings us onto our next topic of conversation, sort of.” Jack begins, leaning forward, Robby doing the same.
“Why do you have a second job?” Robby asked, frowning, “Technically third.”
“I don’t think it counts if you’re not getting paid.” You replied.
Jack rolled his eyes, “You know what we mean.”
“Well, you know, stuff to do, things to buy.” You gave a shrug.
“Your apartment’s bare, kid. You clearly aren’t buying anything.”
“Which is why I want to buy stuff.”
Robby sighs, looking into his latte for a moment, trying to gather his thoughts. “You know you can talk to us, if something’s going on, right? Like I know we’re your attendings, but we still care about you.”
You give a small nod, trying to ignore the warmth in your chest - the feeling that seemed to make itself known anytime Robby or Jack did something even remotely nice for you. The feeling was honestly starting to wind you up, why couldn’t you just respond like a normal person? You’re an adult for fuck’s sake. You should be able to handle your bosses being decent human beings without getting emotional about it. “Yeah, I know.”
Jack takes a sip of his liquid courage before leaning forward, “Listen, kid, I wanted to just ask, about last night-”
“Heads up,” Maddie chimed from her position behind the counter, nodding towards the door. Your head shot up, Darren. For fuck’s sake, Maddie definitely jinxed it. “I’m going to sit out back.”
“Lock the door behind you.” You comment, already making your way to the door. You reach it before he does and the second he tries to push it open, your foot is firmly against it, the door only opens about an inch. “Absolutely fucking not.”
“Open the fucking door, (Y/N).”
“Not happening. Go to Starbucks.” You chime.
“I know she’s in there.”
“Nope, she quit yesterday.” You replied. "She said there's this batshit ex who keeps following her and coming to her place of work, weird, right?"
“Let me in, I want a fucking coffee.” He kicks the door.
“Don’t think I won’t call the cops, dickhead.” You roll your eyes as he slams his hand against the glass before kicking it once again, “Oh, well that’s just charming, isn’t it?”
Darren glares at you through the glass at you, like he’s intimidating enough to scare you into opening the door. If he saw your dad and the people he had trouble with, he’d probably piss himself. “You’ll pay for this, (Y/N).”
“I’m shaking.” You answer dryly. “Go the fuck away.”
“Tell Maddie I’ll see her later.”
“She quit.” Hey, at least he hasn’t called you a slur yet. Seems like progress.
“Fuck you, fag.” And there it is. It’s never an easy word to hear, especially aimed at yourself, but you ignore it, let it swoop off you like water off a duck’s back. It hurt less than when it was coming from your dad though, so that was a win for professionalism at least.
“Get fucked.” You don’t move until he’s down the street and you can no longer see him, turning to see Jack and Robby watching with raised eyebrows, Jack halfway stood up with Robby’s hand on his shoulder in an attempt to pull him back down. “What?”
“And here I thought this was a nice breezy job.” Robby mumbled, finally pulling Jack down.
“Oh, god no. You’ve not met Barbara yet.”
Ronald gave a loud laugh, “Ha!”
You turn your attention back to your attendings, “That’s his ex wife.” Robby snorts into his latte, “They aren’t close. Anyway, where were we?”
“I was gonna go beat the crap out of that guy,” Jack says, shooting a pointed look toward Robby, who simply rolled his eyes.
“No.” Is all Robby says, before turning back to you. “But what he said wasn’t okay.”
Studying you for a moment, Robby gives a small nod. “You were telling us why you needed a second or third job.”
“Right, yeah,” You nodded, “I’ve got shit to buy.”
“And nothing’s wrong?”
“Why would anything be wrong?” You frowned.
“You tell us, kid.” Jack said.
“Nothing’s wrong.” You give a shrug. “I just need the extra cash.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“Alright, we’ve gotta head out,” Jack said with a sigh, “But if you need anything, call us, okay?”
“Yep,” You nodded, “And I’ll see you both tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow kid,” Jack said, reaching across to ruffle your hair - despite your immediate protests. Robby frowned, watching the way your shoulders’ tensed for a split second before you forced yourself to relax.
The domesticity of the action leaves a pit in your stomach, they barely knew you. Yet here they were, letting you stay a night in their spare room, cooking you pancakes, giving you their travel cups, asking how you were. All things your dad has never done. You swallow, plastering a smile on as you try to fix your hair. “See you later oldies.”
“Go safe,” Robby nodded, “And get a good night’s sleep, please. You’re grouchy otherwise.”
“I will, I will, now get out before I kick you out.”
“Yeah, yeah,” They waved you off with a laugh, grabbing their cups before you could and placing them on the counter before leaving. What legends.
“If you think they're old, I dread what you think of me.” Ronald grumbled into his cup.
“I think you're a spring chicken, Ronald.”
You work at the cafe with Maddie until Jasmine comes in at two. And the next thing you know you’re making your way to the diner. Thankfully it's not too horrendous - your pay doesn't get cut, no one tries to get you fired, and you make twenty five dollars in tips to add to your grocery funds.
So when eleven rolls around, the diner long shut, and now cleaned, you drag your feet as you head over to the bus stop, before you pause. No more buses, right? That was part of the plan. With a sigh, you walk past it, heading on the long walk home. It’s going to be a long month.
Regardless as to how pretty you thought the sky was, it was a cold. The type that seeped into your bones, that made them hurt with each step. You keep walking though, you don’t exactly have a choice. At about the half way point, it starts raining, at first only a drizzle until it’s pouring down. Your hair clung to your forehead, droplets slipping into your eyes. You keep walking.
You ignore the small group of men huddled halfway through an alley you walk past, you just keep going. By the time you finally get home, you’re soaked through, shoes squelching on each step as you make your way up the stairs. You had no clue how you were going to get these dry by the time you had to head to work in the morning. You were going to have to throw all of this in the wash when you got in, have a shower, and head straight to bed. Your eyes flick to your watch, nearly one. Brilliant. You had to be up in four hours.
Finally reaching your floor, you breathe a sigh of relief, rounding the corner to your door, you falter. A silhouette stood in front. Taking another breath, you make your way there, two steps in, you recognise the silhouette as your dad, who immediately turned to you.
“I need the money.”
“Dad, I- I don’t have the money yet,” You swallow, stepping closer, checking your keys were in your pocket, if you looked busy maybe he’d just go away.
“What do you mean you don’t have the money?” He growled, stepping closer, moving away from the door.
You step closer to the door, too tired to think straight. “I just- I don’t have the money.” Your voice is quiet, “And I can’t get the full eight hundred-”
“Why the fuck not?” He snarls, boxing you in against your door, you can feel the handle digging into your back.
“I’m not getting paid that much-”
“You better find it then,” His hands reach the collar of your jacket, ignoring how soaked through it was. “Because they know where to find you. And they will.”
“Dad, I get paid tomorrow, I swear, I’ll send as much as I can-” Your head snaps to the side, the backhand landing heavily on your cheek, just under your eye. It stings where your dad’s ring chipped at your skin. Your eyes water at the impact despite yourself, a combination of the shock, the sting, and it being right under your eye all playing against you. Fuck, it’s been a while since that last happened. You blink them back, not wanting to give him the satisfaction, you were twenty four for fucks sake.
“Get me my money. All of it.” And just like that he’s gone. You give yourself thirty seconds of self pity, before you stand up straight and rolling your shoulders back, before unlocking your front door. Everything would be okay in the morning. You just had to pay him the money. And in the meantime? Shower and maybe grab an icepack.
JAxReader!doctor!wearsglasses ❤️🔥 another day another brain dump. And today I’m jumping on the trend of texting the wrong pic to JA
The motel you end up at on the way to the conference at was old and rundown. You huff in exhaustion, wrapping your jacket tightly around you, waiting for Jack to finalise booking the rooms. Your phone buzzes once, you ignore it. Jack comes back with an unreadable look on his face, “there’s one room left.”
“Okay let’s try a different motel then?”
“And how are you planning to get there with a broken car?”
“Right.” He hands you the key, and gestures for you to lead the way. One room, with your boss who hadn’t said a word to you during your 2 hour drive. Your phone buzzes again, with yet another text from your best friend, Em, asking you to send her the picture of the bra you’re wearing, because she wants to buy the same.
“I’m gonna-“ you gesture awkwardly to the bathroom, and leave him sitting on the awfully small bed. You take off your jumper, and snap a quick photo of you in the mirror, and send it to Em.
Looking good.
Thanks Em.
Send me one without the bra 😛
You’re such a flirt. Love you girly
You stare at yourself in the mirror, and maybe you should take a picture of your bare chest. For you and only you. Without giving it much thought, you take your glasses off, throwing them to the side, lift one arm up, putting it behind your head and snap the photo.
Jack: can you send me the picture of the car reg number. You roll your eyes at the text message — you can’t even get 5 minutes of peace to yourself. You clip your bra back on, and throw your jumper back on, hair getting in the way.
Jack: now please. Phone buzzes again and you quickly send him a picture.
You leave the room, giving your glasses a quick clean before putting them back on and find Jack on the bed staring at his phone. “Are you looking at pictures of naked women on your phone?” You didn’t take him for a creep. Could he not have waited until he’s in private? He lifts the phone up to show you, but you can’t see that far. “Ew please don’t show me.”
He moves off the bed and walks over to you, showing you a close up. That’s you and your bare chest, on HIS phone. “Wh-oh- I’m so- fuck I’m so sorry that’s not- oh God!”
“So..” he leans in murmuring..
“Dr Abbot I-“
“I what?” He tilts his head playfully with a tiny smirk on his face.
You know what? You’re not ashamed of it. “I thought I looked good and I took a photo of myself. I apologise I should have double checked what I sent.”
“Good? You thought you looked good?”
You nod shakily. He leans in, the lack of distance between the two of you takes your breath away, “Sweetheart I could think of better words to describe you...” You nod again, knees about to buckle. “…smoking hot, sexy, delicious, breathtaking. Not just good.”
