Sheldon is probably a controversial character to love, but I do. Despite his arrogance, and his need to prove that he is the smartest in the room. This man is hilariously entertaining, and turns out he is capable of loving those closest to him even if he does bully them.

It's Autism Acceptance Week so I want to talk about Dr. Sheldon Cooper.

Why? I hear you ask. Why? Sheldon is the damaging stereotype that we try to move away from in the autism community.

Well, I want to talk about Sheldon because he is so relevant in the conversation of autism acceptance. He may be a cliché that allistic people look at as a "joke", and that neurotypical people often see as a burden and an insensitive, unemotional, robotic person BUT Sheldon represents the way in which autistic people are treated day in, day out. And this show normalises it.

Although Sheldon is a stereotype, he does share a lot of traits that we autistic people personify with. I know autistic people that are just like him. Hell, I have the same traits as Sheldon.

The problem with Sheldon's character isn't that he lacks empathy, or that he is often perceived to be "selfish", or that he's void in the ability to socialise, the issue is the way in which his "friends" treat him.

Seeing the way Leonard, the person that is supposed to be Sheldon's best friend, treats Sheldon is despicable. It normalises treating autistic people as sub-human. And it's disgusting.

Sheldon never meant to cause any offence to anyone and Leonard knew that, yet he still made Sheldon feel bad about it. I hated it.

For example, when Sheldon has his meltdowns, his friends treat him as though he's being ridiculous and uncalled for. He's never allowed to express his upset because his friends make him out to be the bad guy all the time. Even when his emotions are justified. He's never allowed to just ... express himself.

His friends are intelligent people, they are clearly aware that Sheldon is on the Spectrum and, yet, they still treat him like he's a problem all the time. He does do some bad things but he tries to make right when he does wrong.

Sheldon is unapologetically himself. And so he should be.

He was constantly told by the other characters that he should be and act a certain way and that's where the issue lies. Autistic people shouldn't have to change themselves to fit in. He wasn't out to hurt anyone. He was just being himself. I'm glad he was able to grow through the series and build relationships, but I'm also glad they didn't change his character too much.

The writers were wrong for normalising the behaviour that Sheldon's friends, and Amy too, have towards him. And I will die on this hill.

The writers were also wrong for using Sheldon's autism and his traits as comedic devices but we already know that.
