How great is the black studies dept at Howard? I always hear great things but Id love to hear your opinion. I'm applying early action and should be submitting my app soon. I just hope and pray that I can afford the tuition.
The Black Studies Department, which is housed jointly in the Afro-American Studies and African Studies Departments is AMAZING. If you have not heard the name of Dr. Greg Carr (Chair of the Afro-American Studies Department) in conjunction with Howard University you need to get with it he is the definition of Bad (the Black Colloquial understanding of Bad lol). This guy carries the legacy of Howard University on his back and does it well.
You get the truth that the textbooks of HS won’t tell you, you get challenged by the professors to understand your history, and invigorated to be a part of the legacy of Stokely Carmichael, Malcolm X, Marion Wright Edleman, and the like. It is a gift of our generation, so if you come to Howard make sure you take his class, (cause I am trying to find a way to get into one of them now lol).
And Early Action, it is my belief that the earlier you get in, the more access you get to the money. Just pray, look for outside scholarships, and hope your work speaks for you so that money can start flowing you may have to struggle, but doors will open up.
