Dr. Mortimer (Alastair Duncan) and Spot 

I’ve been searching online for a while and I can’t find any information about this dog. The spaniel seems to be requesting pets in a way that suggests to me that it might not be an animal actor, perhaps a cast-member’s pet. I’m not sure. In any case, it’s a charming addition to a lovely adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles. However, looking at the original text, there is indeed a spaniel but there is no name given. There is a chance it could actually be Duncan’s pet.

Holmes’s reaction to Dr. Mortimer‘s mention of marriage

From Chapter 1:

“From one or two friends there on the occasion of my marriage.” “Dear, dear, that’s bad!” said Holmes, shaking his head. Dr. Mortimer blinked through his glasses in mild astonishment. “Why was it bad?” “Only that you have disarranged our little deductions. Your marriage, you say?”

What did Holmes and Watson deduce about Dr. Mortimer’s marital status? It either wasn’t in the text or I missed it! Whatever it was, Holmes sounded disappointed. Disappointed, perhaps, that Dr. M was the marrying sort, for whatever that may entail?

After working for two years in a junior capacity at Charing Cross Hospital, he married and moved to Dartmoor to set up a country practice, where he made the acquaintance of the Baskerville family of Baskerville Hall. After the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville, Dr Mortimer sought out Sherlock Holmes' help in protecting the only remaining heir, Henry Baskerville.
