“I know going to Midtown on Saturday is a freakin’ nightmare, but I’m tellin’ ya - this bakery has the best chai latte I’ve ever had and the bagels are to die for. It’ll all be worth it, I swear.” The subway was far from Mia’s favorite mode of transportation, but since moving to New York she had learned the routes quickly. It was the best way to navigate through the city, even if she much preferred her skate or her bike. The skates weren’t practical for long distances, and well Manhattan traffic was an absolute nightmare and so the subway won almost every time. It was packed, always was midday and that proved especially true on the weekend. Mia kept a passive hand on the pole beside her as the train rumbled and jerked to an unsteady, too-fast start to keep her balance and then leaned against it once the momentum was settled. Someone caught her shoulder as they walked by and Mia made a face, turning with a grumbled “watch it, pendejo –” when something else caught her eye - a very poorly hidden handgun in the waistband of a passenger’s pants, the man in question looking a little too nervous with jerky movements and visible paranoia in how he was looking around. She whistled low, kicked out a boot to nudge her companion and tilted her head lightly in the direction of the man in question before continuing on with her conversation. “-- And! We can get a cupcake as a surprise for Lian, too."
