Lucas exited the bathroom shutting the light off behind him, as Aubree sat on her side of their king size bed applying lotion to her body and flipping through a magazine. ”Catching up on your celebrity gossip?” Lucas joked as he rounded the bed to his side and he plopped down on the bed, propping his back against the headboard and crossing one leg over the other. ”No, just reading my horoscope.” Aubree admitted and he shook his head, a grin still plastered on his face. ”You believe in all that…astrology stuff?” Lucas turned to her. ”Sometimes, it’s scary accurate. You want to hear yours?” Aubree perked up, turning to her husband. ”Sure, go for it. Taurus remember?” He winked, figuring that he’d give her and her horoscopes the benefit of the doubt for tonight.
”Taurus…Taurus…Taurus…” She thumbed through a few pages until she landed on the one regarding his sign. She set the magazine down in between them so that they could both glance at it, and read it. ”Stable and conservative, this is one of the most reliable signs of the zodiac, ready to endure and stick to their choices until they reach the point of personal satisfaction.” They were already off to a good start because those were two of Lucas’ promising characteristics. He provided stability for himself, for Aubree, for their girls, and when he wanted something, he saw to the end until he got what he wanted. ”Keep going, I’ll make you a believer.” Aubree chuckled, laying her own back against the headboard to listen to him read.
”When they create enough intimacy with a loved one, they become a bit gooey—“ Lucas paused and he looked over at his brunette wife. ”Am I gooey?” He chuckled. ”Like a warm chocolate chip cookie, babe.” She reached over and rested a hand on his cheek, stroking it softly before letting it fall so he could continue. ”For long-term relationships, they often choose people from the same social environment that are able to respond to their intellectual needs.” Lucas read, which seemed to prove true in his relationship with Aubree. They were both from the same social environment, hence they met in his bar that was designated for first responders of the like. Maybe, Lucas would become a believer in horoscopes after all.
”Home and matters of the family are very important to every Taurus. This is a person who loves kids and appreciates time spent with people who love them.” Lucas nodded his head. When he was single, he was interested in everyone else’s kid, and never really thought about settling down and having a family of his own. Aubree came along and they were of like mind that kids weren’t really in the picture for them, until they were, and now they wouldn’t change it for the world. Lucas chuckled and shut the magazine. ”Alright…I’m no longer a skeptic.” He looked over at his wife. ”You can just say I was right.” Lucas tossed the magazine to the side and reached over to tickle her sides, earning a fit of giggles and she began to squirm underneath his grip. ”Yes, yes you’re right. You’re right.” He placed kisses on her face.
Who: Kendall Ryan and Beth Patton.
What: Kendall's on a mandatory visit with her mother and the subject of her drum playing comes up.
When: June 2006.
Where: A local Mexican restaurant.
Thirteen year old Kendall had been dreading this lunch out with her mother, since she could still sense the anger about the custody battle. It had been three months, ninety entire days approximately, to get over it, but the woman in front of her wasn't having any of it.
Despite her worries, though, it hadn't been too bad, and she had been here for over an hour now. She'd fully expected to have to sneak into the bathroom and call her dad to pick her up early. But her mom was being civil, and Kendall was thankful.
"I've heard you're in band, now, Kendall?" She asked curtly, with a smile that didn't reach the eyes. "I do hope you're playing something a bit more sensible now. It'll be more impressive."
Quickly swallowing her mouthful of food and the hopeful feeling she had just a few seconds ago, Kendall put on a tight smile. "No, Mom, I still drum. I'm good at it. My teacher thinks so too. So that's what I'm going to stick with." It took every ounce of strength she had to say that kind of thing to the woman staring her down, but Kendall had been working on it. She wasn't so passive anymore, much to her mother's dismay.
"Ah." She said simply, obviously having more to add on the matter. "Well, that's lovely for you, dear. But please know that I don't support this little obsession of yours to continue outright defying me and my opinions." Her voice was sweet, but her words far from it.
"I'm well aware, Mom." She put as much disdain into the title as possible, like a true teenager always did.
"That is quite enough with your attitude, Kendall. I swear, I don't even know if your father disciplines you properly." She clicked her tongue in annoyance, shaking her head from side to side. Kendall said nothing, not wanting to dig herself an even bigger hole. Why did she have to hate her and her father? Why couldn't she see that her words were the cause of this entire mess?
Kendall swallowed the lump in her throat and continued making polite small talk with her, willing for when her father came to pick her up to come faster.
