favorite thing about them

Girl went from being naive to a fault and absolutely zero fighting experience to the hero of the franchise who everyone, friend and foe alike, look up to. And this didn't happen instantly, but through hard work and substantial effort that we see throughout all five seasons. Unlike a lot of other power-of-friendship shonen protagonists, she really earned her status as protagonist. Also, I love me a girl with a DETERMINATION TO FIST (ok but seriously I love girls who just... punch shit).

least favorite thing about them

Objectively I understand why she tries so hard to have her parents reconcile. I do. But also, Hibiki sweetie, you can all do better. Your mother can do better.

Okay but seriously I don't ship her romantically with anyone other than Miku. Chris can join if she's not over in TsubaMari land in whatever fanfic idea is running through my brain at the moment.

I think if you presented me with the idea of romantic/sexual Hibiki x Tsubasa I would just look at you funny. It's not that I strongly dislike it; I just don't have the brain space to entertain it. Similar thought regarding Hibiki x Kirika or Hibiki x Shirabe.

random headcanon

If she doesn't end up permanently working for SONG (which is a headcanon I flip flop on constantly), I think she'd make a great firefighter. One day she comes back home, covered in soot, carrying a tiny white cat covered in ash too and hissing up a storm. Miku suggests they formally adopt it. Name it Snowball while looking straight at Chris. Chris is not amused (but she vibes with it).

unpopular opinion

Hibiki is a sweet summer child and I love her, so I don't really think I have an unpopular opinion about her.

HOWEVER. THE WRITING IN THE SHOW ABOUT THINGS RELATED TO HER...

I think conflating the Lance of Longinus with Gungnir just to give the sole ability of deicide to Hibiki is... *rips my hair out*.

Also, lowkey, Hibiki taking Gungnir from Maria in G was kind of fucked up 😂 This is less anger inducing and more "WOW okay that happened" inducing. It pretty much gets brushed under the rug by both canon and the fandom, which I have mixed feelings about. No wonder Maria never calls Hibiki by nam— SHOT

At first I thought "what song do I usually loop to inspire me to write a scene about instilling hope in the defeated and broken?"

And then I remembered the OST that plays in LB2 when Napoleon sacrifices his life to shoot Surtr in his giant fucking face and thought "Oh yeah I did loop this a lot during all the Hibiki scenes I was writing, didn't I?" Especially the ones where she's yelling "DATTO SHITEMO!!!"

Your first days at Beacon Academy were going anything but as expected.

It had started almost as soon you had set foot off your family’s personal airship. A childish whine cut across the open courtyard, and before you knew it, a girl had collapsed onto your luggage, the butlers sent with you to transfer your stuff quickly bending down to pick up the mess.

Upon seeing the open Dust suitcase, however, you couldn’t keep quiet.

“What do you think you’re doing?!”

The next twenty-four hours only escalated from there. Now, you are stomping through the Emerald Forest with the same girl that had bowled over your luggage only hours earlier, caused a small explosion encasing the both of you to boot, interrupted your beauty sleep later that night by squabbling incessantly with some blonde oaf, and just downright seemed like she didn’t belong at such a prestigious school.

Ruby Rose, you bitterly recall being her name.

Such an elegant name for such an insufferable dolt.

“Come on, Weiss,” Ruby complains for the umpteenth time as she follows her new partner. “We’re partners now; we’ve got to at least act like we’ll work well together! Can we just…set aside our differences? I will if you will!”

With a resigned sigh, you begrudgingly agree. “Fine.”

Of course it wasn’t that easy. After almost setting the forest on fire because of colliding into Ruby, you went straight back to insulting the poor girl.

“…If you exercised even the slightest amount of caution in the placement of your strikes, I wouldn’t have set the forest on fire!”

You are somewhat surprised, however, at how quickly she is willing to look past your scolding in favor of mending the chasm between you. After a quick back and forth, which ultimately led to a tree being cut down in her rage, she was right back to trying to please you, hot on your tail and chatting animatedly about anything she could think of.

You tune her out for the most part, more intent on getting out of this godforsaken forest, and dealing with this questionable partnership later.

Both of you are brought from your rambles, both internal and external, when you nearly walk off a steep cliff. You can see the altar with the relics you are supposed to retrieve off in the distance and, well…several hundred feet below you.

“Great; now what?” you grumble.

Ruby simply shrugs beside you and quips. “We jump.”

You had been certain Ruby was some kind of daft, but this was just a new level of stupidity entirely.

And you just had to inform her of that.

“Really?” you drawl, voice oozing with sarcasm. “You’re an idiot. I’ve met smarter sandwiches.”

An ominous caw sounds from nearby, and you instantly grow wary of the grin that spreads across Ruby’s face then.

“Well then, prepare to be amazed by this sandwich,” she states with nothing but the utmost confidence.

The next thing you know, she had grabbed your hand, a high-caliber rifle had fired, and you were suddenly flying.

Yes, this new beginning was going nothing like you had expected.
