Okay here’s my quick review of the 1st Dracul musical:
It’s very silly, like even aside from the premise of “Sailor Moon fights homunculi, vampires oh and Dracula’s here”. Judging from audience shots of tiny children in sailor moon outfits and the occasional baby cry during songs, these were very much made with kids in mind - so that means more slapstick humor and more cartoonish behavior from the senshi. And I love that
Speaking of slap-stick, there’s a group of gag villains, the Mannjettes(?) they kindof overstay their welcome in parts but I can appreciate the guts it takes to go onstage and improv that kind of thing (and the kids did laugh so mission accomplished), but one of them relies on the terrible “Okama” stereotype and there’s a scene full of “man in a dress” transphobic jokes involving them and that’s a big blunder in an otherwise “PLEASE WATCH THIS!” installment of Sailor Moon (so fair warning to anyone who wants to seek it out, it’s not perfect)
The villainess Death Lamia is definitely a highlight character of this show, like dang girl.
Another highlight is Miyuki Kanbe’s Usagi performance. She nailed the energy both acting wise and musically. I forgot that she passed away in 2008 until I looked it up yesterday so I think that adds another layer of importance to this trilogy.
I want to know everything about the production side of this musical. Like why Dracula and Professor Tomoe? These villains aren’t space invaders or anything, they’re grouped as the “Undead” and mixes all kinds of religious & alchemy stuff like Homunculi and Samael, that just exists here on Earth with humans. And I mean there is that silly manga side story of Chibiusa having a legitimate vampire classmate, so is that what sparked this story? Vampires are just part of Sailor Moon lore now and that they always have been?
The music mostly uses existing tracks but you know what, they’re all solid hits so I get it. You could almost say that they’re..
I can’t believe there’s 2 more of these I have to watch to get the full story and that Dracula’s only in the 1st one but I’m much more excited about going into them now.
