Ava was past the point of panic as she paced in meandering circles, letting out loud screeches in an attempt to call back those who had left her behind. Oh, her Alpha would be so mad--She would revoke Ava's raiding privileges and she'd be punished. A shrill, nearly inhuman wail filled the woods where Ava paced, her bare feet singing grass as she walked. Her Alpha would never let her leave the nest again--
If...If she even got back to the nest. No, no, no, her Alpha was right. Ava was a pathetic useless dragon who would die on her own if her Alpha and nest mates weren't there to protect her. She was such a weak dragon she didn't even have wings and had to be carried during raids! How could she possibly hope to get back now? Were there even any dragons in this area? What if she called the wrong dragon while trying to call her nest mates? Oh, she would never get back to the cave.
Suddenly, as if summoned by her frantic thoughts, Ava heard the sound of a dragon landing nearby. It was a peaceful landing, not that of a predator trying to hide its presence or a defensive dragon projecting it's authority. It had to be one of her nest mates come back for her! A happy croon escaped her lips and she let out a stream of loud dragon chatter, in case her nest mates didn't know exactly where she was among the dense foliage.
She just had to stay still and wait for them, if they were so close she couldn't risk moving and getting lost now. She'd apologize for falling off, all of this had to be her fault, and they would go home and maybe she could convince them not to tell their Alpha. They would have consequences too, after all, for letting Ava do something so stupid.
Still, Ava's anxiety hadn't passed completely, there had been no return call yet. She really had no confirmation that the dragon was anything but non-aggressive in it's landing. Who knew if that could change once it heard a noisy little dragon in it's territory. Ava scanned the clearing for a hiding spot before dashing over to an old oak with exposed roots, little burnt footprints left in her wake. Quickly she crawled into the small opening and faced herself towards the field, this would be a good defensible position.
Her Alpha would be proud of her for actually thinking of something smart for once.
