Tagging: I’m pretty sure everyone who follows this blog has already been tagged, but if not, have at it!
I’m just going to put my most-listned-to Spotify playlists on Shuffle and post whatever comes up.
Worldcanon: Shadowmarks at Sea
Any less-than-legal naval vessel (read: pirate ship) which has travelled the Sea of Ghosts for a while has probably heard about shadowmarks. Crews with particularly close ties to the Thieves’ Guild may paint them onto the hull of their ship to warn would-be rivals not to attack, while conversely, treasure galleons and heavily loaded supply ships may notice a strange symbol, a lined rectangle inside a circle, carved more subtly into the stern.
Of course, if a pirate crew happened to contain, say, a mage who studied at the College of Winterhold and had read about Shadowmarks in the Arcanaeum, and if that crew actively annoyed the Thieves’ Guild on regular occasions, they might paint the “Protected” shadowmark onto their hull anyway. And, if they don’t think that will be enough, maybe the “Danger” shadowmark. Or if they’re feeling particularly devious, the “Empty” shadowmark.
What does this have to do with the Boar-Chasers? Absolutely nothing because only one of them has ever even seen the sea Trond heard a rumour about shadowmarks in the guard once. He thinks they must be nonsense. Why would thieves go around telling people where the good caches are, eh? Why would they mark where they’d hidden the loot? Why would they do that? You wouldn’t even need a guard if they did that, you could just go and find it yourself. Honestly. The things civilians come up with.
