Writing advice: Dragons
Don't worry, I'm not going to tell you how to write dragons. Make your dragons however you want them! But I thought I might share some of the info I found on dragons when I was planning for my wip. (@screnwriter you gave me this idea with your post on pirates! Since I have a ton in dragons, I thought I should share.)
Obviously, this covers a range of dragon myths and legends, and therefore not everything is seen in all dragons. This will mostly be in dot points, so further research may be needed to learn more details. And with that, here you go! Have fun!
Western dragons/Miscellaneous:
Typically evil
Caves full of hoarded treasure (usually cursed-see the story of Fafnir)
Dragon blood can: give ability to look into future, cause wounds to never heal
Breath or spit fire, poison, ice and/or other elements
Reptilian or serpentine
Feathered or scaly
Capable of human speech
Planting dragon teeth could raise an army
Eastern dragons
typically benevolent and knowledgeable
Size and shape shifters
Generally a longer, more snake-like body (think Haku in Spirited away, or the fire masters in Avatar)
Associated with longevity
Chinese have four claws, Japanese have three
Responsible for rains and the harvest
5 Dragon Kings
At the four corners of the compass. They would cause typhoons, heavy rains and hurricanes by either rising out of the sea or flying.
Dongfu Huanlong- could understand dragons and became a dragon trainer
Created humans by breathing on monkeys
Of course there's also your typical and very common details; they hatch from eggs, have yellow or red eyes, dorsal spines, bat-like wings, a barbed tail and some have horns.
