Untitled
We’re in this together once that clock starts,
eyes fixed on the opponent.
Well-worn verde helmets,
slapped on top of our heads,
Ready for war.
You can feel the hearts pounding violently,
But momma said,
Never be scared of something
that bleeds like you.
If you are tired, suck it up.
If you’re hurt, toughen up,
Sympathy only goes so far.
You begin to forget the plays,
The moment might be too big,
The lights are bright,
The crowd is like a wave of sound crashing in my ear,
I take a deep breathe
And tell myself,
“Momma told me to never be scared of,
Something that bleeds like you.
Only if they could see us now,
In the shadows
where confidence goes to die,
And dreams turn into nothing but an afterthought.
They didn’t listen to Momma,
They’re scared.
