I hear my mother say, but my head is too foggy to understand what is going on around me.There is a celebration happening and I feel like I have yet to be invited.I hear laughter, I hear praise but best of all..I hear a cry.Something small, tiny, wailing in fear. This is how you make your existence clear as day for me to acknowledge.Your grandmother, father, the entire entourage you have created follow after you as the nurse brings you over.You are wrapped up in beautiful cloth, freshly bathed and crying your heart out; but I don’t know what to do to make you stop.–You cry louder, then I start too.But then I look at you, you look at me and you are finally resting in my arms after all those months of anticipation. This is where you belong, right here with me, safely in my care.Your face is turning red and tears stain your cheeks, little hands curled in fists not knowing what to do...Little toes.Little fingers.Everything about you is small and helpless, to the point where I take pity on you.You have so much to learn, to see, and one day you will realize all of this but hopefully not too soon.Your hands are warm.…..Your hands were warm.There was a point where you cried and laughed, called out to me through the years in pure excitement. Once upon a time, Dravenn, you were my shadow that followed in my every footstep. But now there is nothing.You are just ash and bone.You are only a memory.My favorite thought on days like these.
