Devotion and Loyalty: James Potter
This Is How I Let You Down
♫ Trust in me, I’d lead you blindly if I needed someone to follow my role. This is how I let you down. And I’ve never been scared to show. Somehow I’m feeling it more as I get old.You spoke the words I love to hear, but still you chose to follow my lead. ♫
The biggest regret of Sirius’ life is convincing James to make Peter his secret keeper, but at the time, he really did think he was doing the right thing. If the whole world thought he was the secret keeper, Sirius could go on the run, draw the death eaters away from the Potters and from Peter, could keep the control in his hands, and yet no matter what happened–if they gave him a truth telling potion, tortured him, etc.–he still couldn’t give his friends away. He was more than willing to die for this cause, more than willing to suffer anything at the hands of the death eaters if it meant James would be safe. He had no idea how very, very wrong he’d turn out to be.
The irony of how it all turned out is that much more painful because there is nothing–NOTHING–Sirius would not do for James. Sirius lived in a cave, ate rats, risked the Dementor’s Kiss, died for Harry, and he’d have done all that and more for James any day of the week. Sirius is the definition of ride or die, and he would have followed James to the end of the world, so to realize he’s the reason the man is dead is by far the most devastating thing that could happen to Sirius, and he will never forgive himself.
