Absolutely hilarious that Dream could have any system of governance he wants in his realm, and he chooses to have one where he has to do paper work. And as far as the audience is told, he is the only Endless to structure his realm this way.

You can say anything about The Sandman season 2 but you can't say they haven't given us fanfic writers 1000 ways to keep Dream alive in our fics. Just off the top of my head:

Orpheus not wanting to die (fuck ableism, destroy the idea that it is better to be dead than alive and disabled, give the head some joy for life. I've already suggested Hob should be his friend.)

Orpheus being killed by someone or something else (your fic, your rules. There are authorities higher than the Endless, and people as powerful as the Endless, and rules of magic you can invent)

Dream and Delirium finding Destruction some other way than Orpheus (Potentially with other disastruous consequences of a different nature)

Dream actually communicating with Lyta or having someone else (Matthew, Lucienne, The Corinthian, Constantine, literally anyone) explain things in his stead

Dream not freeing Loki and giving the baby Daniel task to someone who is actually responsable

Dream helping Lyta dismiss/break away from the kindly ones after seeing Daniel alive (your fanfic, make your own magic rules for how she does that) You could then, of course, have someone else set the Kindly ones on Dream and kill him anyways for funsies.

Dream not sending Nuala back to Faerie/her refusing to go.

Titania/Nuala not summoning Dream out of his realm. In this case he'll have to spend your whole fic quarentined in his realm unless you also try option 6.

Nuala beheading the shit out of Lyta a little earlier, before Morpheus chooses death. A little anti-climatic depending on when you do it. Lyta apparently survives this.

Dream or someone else killing Lyta in the waking world (poor Lyta. But since she'd die in the Dreaming, she could stay there and care for baby Daniel until someone else sets the Kindly Ones on Dream.)

Dream's punishment not actually being death (I read one fic like this. I find it kinda lazy but it's your fic, your rules)

Morpheus afterlife or retirement (I rlly don't think Dream really wanted to leave his function, but Dreamling shippers like to imagine him with Hob for eternity. Other options are:

Becoming an average dream in Daniel's kingdom (Dreamception but ok),

Hell (angsty),

Reincarnation as a mortal (idk)

Becoming a god (I made this one up, but there are probably many dream gods to choose from. He could assume the form of one of them. The life of a god isn't easy, as we saw in American Gods, but he could derive meaning from still serving his function in a way)

And finally, "Morpheus" alive through Daniel and seeing things in a new point of view (that, of course, is the canon. I'd like to see more Daniel in fics)

My favorite thing about The Ruler of Hell is how Dream bluescreens so bad after Lucifer tells him they quit that his brain doesn't fully reboot until he's back in The Dreaming. It's so funny
