Cracking the Acorn: How It All Began
Every plant starts with a seed. Every business starts with an idea.
Acorn first started with our CEO, Gabe Otte. In January of 2014 he had the brilliant and slightly geeky idea of wanting to send his girlfriend on a digital scavenger hunt that culminated in a proposal. However, he quickly realized that place-based technology like this was few and far between, so he decided to build an app that would allow location-aware messaging without sacrificing battery life or privacy. He recruited his brother, Michael, and his good pal, Frank, to help develop the app of his dreams. With their powers combined, this trio of founding fathers gave birth to Acorn.
We’re starting this blog to give you a sneak-peak of the highs and lows of an early-stage tech startup. Over time, we hope to reveal our personalities as well as what life is like in DreamIt Ventures’ accelerator program on Wall Street—because let’s face it, here at Acorn, we’re all a little nuts.
