The trailer of #IAmU was intriguing enough on its own so I gave it a shot. Installed the iWant app and tried the first episode. Surprisingly, I saw a familiar name on the opening credits and it was actually written by a friend of a friend (Hi Ash!). Anyone who knows me knows that I judge a series based on the first episode and if I don't like it, well that's probably the end of it. I Am U had all the elements of a series that I would be drawn to -- secrets, mystery, thriller, and more secrets. You know what it reminded me of? The Spanish Netflix series ELITE (which then reminded me of PLL and HTGAWM). I ended up finishing the series and it's the first local series that I've loved from start to finish literally. The storytelling reminded me of Nasaan Si Elissa and The Killer Bride where everything starts off good until the biggest mystery unfolds. The pace was actually a lot better than I had expected and how they closed each episode was enough for you to want to move onto the next right away. In seven short episodes, we get treated to the kind of content that we deserve and we can be proud of. This actually puts things in perspective to me, that we ARE capable of producing quality content that's different from the ones we've grown accustomed to. I Am U, for my first iWant series, is a solid step for the local entertainment industry. I've seen our potential in movies and I am genuinely happy that it can also be translated into a series. Also, I've got to hand to Julia Barretto. She has the makings of a great actor despite her issues as a person. Seeing her portray a character (SPOILER ‼‼‼) who is also pretending to be someone else was also a refreshing sight to see. The nuances considered from voice to actions, it was believable. As a viewer, you also get to see where the "pretending" lapses. Was it intentional? Maybe, maybe not. I look forward to the next season because with the way they concluded the finale? There can't not be a sequel.
