My yard is color therapy in the spring and summer..and quite a ways into the fall as well. Growing up with a mom whose green thumb has brought many a plant back from the brink and always kept our yard looking like a fairytale, you'd think I would've followed those footsteps from a young age. But I didn't. My interests were elsewhere when I was younger and though I loved the dreamscapes my mother created, I just wasn't too interested in creating them myself. It could've been the spiders. Tennessee has many and the big ones like to jump out at you when you have your hands in the dirt. True story. It resonated for me sometime in high school that I could be part of the magic that is working with nature to grow beauty and medicine. I had my first little garden packed with annuals and all the hastas I could get my hands on. I learned so much from tending it, and yes the big spider did jump out when my hands were in the dirt. I almost passed out (definitely screamed) but ultimately kept going. These days I still consider myself a novice gardener and I'm loving the journey. Each year Jacki and I build on what we learned the previous - what will and won't grow in the clay soil we have, what will do well in our full sun backgarden (even some plants that are claimed to love full sun struggle with what we get on top of a hill with little tree coverage.) and realizing just how much we love the process. It really is magic. Right now the yard is covered in wildflowers and medicine growing wild. It's the purples that are calling me in the form of violets, henbit and purple deadnettle like they do every spring and have done since I was a child. The amethysts I chose for the new Dream Weaver pieces are a nod to the rhythm of spring and the magic she weaves. Also, maybe an acknowledgement of the peace I've found with (outside) spiders and their own brand of magic. I've even been known to name a few of the ones who stay a while.
