50 years ago on this day, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, 2 runners from my hometown of San Jose, Ca stood on foreign soil at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. They not only won 1st and 2nd place in their races but would be sent home for protesting, silently with a fist raised in the air, the killing and unfair treatment of African Americans. Their inspiration and voice of such a movement, lead by Dr. Harry Edwards (pictured above), would not be the beginning nor the end but a loud rumble in the battle against racsim and unequal treatment in sports around the world. This is the opening spread of @lequipe magazine, one of the most famous sports journals in Europe, with my full page image of Dr Edwards. Originally shot for @victoryjournal you can read my version with the link in my bio. Protesting in sports is American and Black athletes have been doing it since the 40’s. Kaepernick is absolutely not the first and he will not be the last. And we must pay tribute to those who champion athletes like this legend whom I’m so happy to call my friend, Dr Harry Edwards 🙌🏿✊🏿🥇#1968olympics #blackpower #dredwards #tommiesmith #johncarlos (at Mexico City, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bo_4CRKFDPQ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=gy9loxulz7pl
